  1. There are several different Boletes, some good to eat some not. I have been eating some that grow in my front yard, they will get as large as a dinner plate almost, very spongy looking layer under cap instead of the gills, will leave a blue mark within moments of touching the underside. Also not that the stem has some worm holes in it. Anyway they are absolutely delicious, last one I slice about 1/4 inch thick and sautéed, had a little bit of a meaty texture and flavor was fabulous.
  2. I have seen a couple of broods, but they were mostly still very small like they were a late hatch. Most of the hay fields are just now getting cut with the dry weather, so might be more likely to see them. But I agree that I have seen less than usual.
  3. I figured it was by re selling stolen crawdad traps.
  4. All the MSHP Regatta Permits refer to it as the "Hermitage State Park", I believe you are referring to the Northern most one, not the one in the campground. The North one has by far the larger parking area, and is intended for non campers I believe, as opposed to the one located within the campground. If you want something more specific give them a call at 417-852-4291. That is the main office in the Pittsburg Area, but Bill, Dave or Dave would for sure be able to help you out.

    What's Cooking?

Peaches and maters, the difference between what you buy in the store and picked right off the plant are worlds apart. Over ripe peaches are one of my kryptonite foods. You could bait a giant steel trap with them, post signs around it, and it would still catch me trying to get to them. Sadly the dang Japanese beetles have gang raped my peaches. I am going to have to get a jug of malthion, as much as I hate that stuff, before there is nothing left of my orchard, and wifes roses.
  6. I use mostly Fireline on BC with one spooled with Stren Gorilla (because it was on clearance), mostly 10#, but the Gorilla is 14#, I don't have any problems with it on a bait caster, but I am not a heavy user of BC's I tend to be more of a spinning reel guy. I have never even considered Nanofil on a Baitcaster. I may try again with the leader thing on my nanofil, but sure got discouraging the first few times.
  7. If you tie directly to the lure with braid (and Nanofil seems worse i.e. slicker) you can't use the same knot you use on mono. palomar will work, I use a Fish-n-fool knot. I haven't seen the nanofil knot, will go look at it. As for the leader I have tried blood knot, and Albright knots, they seem tight and solid at first but after a while, I don't know if the water lubricates the knot or what, but it simply slides apart. I don't have any problems with loosing jigs on nanofil, which is primarily what I fish with it, either crappie or walleye, it it certainly not as abrasion resistant as mono but no braid is to my knowledge.
  8. I have no intentions of going back to mono of any kind either. I am quite happy with braid, (fireline on BC, and Nanofil on spinners). I have tried several time to use a leader on the nanofil and for the life of me I cannot get a knot to hold, has cost me a couple lures, so I now just tie directly to the lure/jig.
  9. While I don't condone your actions, I can only imagine the apparent satisfaction it provided. The real problem would arise if the "other" camp had problems at their site in the past, and posted a trail camera to watch the camp. Then taken the footage to the local LE and guess who they would have come to see. Hopefully you would have had you name etc. engraved on the traps, so you could show why it happened, but you would have been in front of the judge as well.
  10. As of today, outflow reduction began this morning. Outflow will be reduced from 2800 CFS to 250 CFS by 1600 hrs or so today. will then see how the inflow and evaporation affects things and likely cut further to our minimum of 50 CFS at some point this week, as it doesn't look like we are in line for more rain for a while. I will be out on the lake the next couple days (if I survive), have been seeing lots of schools of shad. Hoping for just a little breeze, because its gonna be brutal.

    What's Cooking?

I am sort of a second vegetarian, I eat a lot of things that eat only veggies, but as you have already figured out, I am probably closer to a coyote in my eating habits, I will eat just about anything. My wife and I may not be skinny, pale vegans but we are chunky and happy. In the summer I am mostly vegetarian, but that is more because of the massive influx of fresh produce, right now if the form of maters. But found a lady at church who is so excited about being able to can tomatoes she has offered to can them all and give us half. Being a lazy guy who likes to garden and eat produce, and give it away, but not can it, I couldn't have thought up a better deal. She doesn't know it but by doing that she has also gotten her name on the short list for canteloupes assuming they actually survive and make melons in the weedpatch that passes for my garden. Grass isn't bad, as I sprayed it with some Arrow, which kills the grass, but does do a thing to those big beautiful pig weeds growing there as well. When it gets hot my garden patches have to survive on water and benign neglect.
  12. I agree with you that an un-marked trotline is a big pain, especially when you hang up in it. Also know that sometimes in some places folks will steal/run a trotline that is visable, the last one I had, went home with someone else, guess they thought they needed it more than me. It is a risk you really have to take to mark them and keep them visable. Crawdad traps wouldn't have the risk of entanglement that a trotline does, and would have much less chance of tangling a lure. One of my pet peeves in life is thieves, I can't stand them, with the number of people who use the lakes anymore, most of whom are not "locals" and simply don't look at it like we do. Back in the old days on some lakes/rivers running someone elses lines was a good way to get hurt.
  13. Very nice black crappie.

    What's Cooking?

Hmm, interesting. I like ground chuck and biscuits. I always try to meet the needs and wants of guests but when they get too picky I give them the "eat it or dont, but it's what's for supper" line. If it's a health issue i.e.allergic to something, sure I will make sure I don't use it, but have had guests say things like "oh we only eat organic vegetables", well you are in luck, I am all out of synthetic vegetables.
  15. If it hadn't come a big rain we would already have shut down to minimum flow. Haven't checked the level today, but with the for cast we should be back down to minimum this week. Hope it makes fishing better.
  16. Gave my friend a sack full of the boletes, he was tickled. I manned up and picked a couple more of them, sliced thin and sautéed in butter, holy crap they were good. Had a decent chew and flavor was fabulous, hoping the rain and heat bring up some more.
  17. I know folks who have taken daily limits of crappie back to their campsite, where they have a small freezer on a trailer, plugged in and running. Clean the fish, then freeze them just like at home. However legally you are still done crappie fishing for the day. Cleaning them on the shoreline and putting fillets into an ice chest, would probably be a judgement call by the agent, however if you have over 30 crappie fillets in the ice chest and then keep another one, you are technically in violation. If I was camping and catching crappie, I would take my daily limit (assuming I could actually catch one, which is a big assumption for me some days), clean them put them into bags just like normal and label them with date, permit number, even what lake caught at, then drop them preferably into a freezer, at worst into an ice chest with lots of ice. and then enjoy the rest of the day either chilling at the campsite, or go fishing for walleye, white bass etc.
  18. Crappie and new taters, mmMmmm good.

    Sure looks good.
  20. Fortunately there were no injuries. I will give an atta boy to the MSHP for a quick response. Considering their boat was trapped in he adjacent dock, within 90 minutes or so they had a boat there and officers there sooner than that. Met a second boat and 2 more troopers on the road about 3:30 or so. Considering they had to go get a boat somewhere that ain't bad.
  21. Here is a cut n paste from the regs. No idea how to link it but found the topic in march or April in the stockton forum. The title is something like clarification needed . . . You may possess no more than the daily limit of any given species while you are on waters, or on the banks of waters, where daily limits for those species apply. Any species taken into actual possession, unless released unharmed immediately after being caught, shall continue to be included in the daily limit of the taker for the day.
  22. Correct we have covered the 2 limit thing during night fishing before, though I believe it was directed toward crappie and walleye. You cannot posess more than a daily limit of fish while one the water or shoreline.

    What's Cooking?

I have a bad habit of using recipes as nothing more than a general guide, then begin adding stuff I like or that sounds good. Occasionally I go too far, but usually it ends up good. Never quite repeatable since I never write it down.

    What's Cooking?

Suppers at my house have mostly devolved into, sliced tomatoes, more sliced tomatoes, sliced cukes, and "what do you want to toss on the grill", might not be very glamorous but dang tasty, sure am getting tired of eating so many vine ripened tomatoes Ness.
  25. My maters took a hit today. Storm rolled through right after lunch. Got hame and the yard looked like a war zone, branches everywhere, one apple tree broken, maters flattened, dill weed patch flattened, wifes container plants rolled around, having to drain some water out of the pool and since my son didn't put the filter basket back in lots of stuff to vacuum out. All will grow back or be OK I am sure, no damage to house or peoples all else is acceptable. More maters will split, my mouth is getting pretty tender from all the acid eating them. Ness I may just start using them for reactive 22 targets, enjoy them store bought maters.
