    What's Cooking?

I went all Haute cuisine tonight. Wife had some Angus hot dogs laid out, but I wasn't feeling it. However wrap them.in bacon, and toss on a few stuffed mushroom caps, side of carmelized onions, cottage cheese, and a can of baked beans. Turned into a meal that would be welcome on any creek bank. Sadly my wife was in a hurry to leave and get to a meeting so I rushed thm and didn't get the bacon crisped up.
  2. Early season a shotgun is a good choice for squirrels, one the leaves fall it's all.about the rifle. My dad was a good shot with a shotgun, having actually been around when quail hunting was a real thing. He could take a .410 and hit them.as they ran along braniches etc. I never got the hang of that, but did inherit a love for squirrel hinting. Last several years sadly have worked out to get me into the squirrel woods much.
  3. Just sitting and watching a launch ramp on a holiday weekend can be VERY enteraining.
  4. A cold front pushing down should bring in fresh birds.
  5. Fishing is so cyclical due to water levels, water temps, spawn success, availability of prey, water quality, angling pressure, and sometimes simple luck. So many different variables to consider, I think I will defer to the sampling methods that MDC use to estimate the populations, they certainly aren't perfect but they do follow scientific methods and being an old Biology Major I can understand that. Personally I remember fishing Stockton in the 70s and 80s with my dad, lots of crappie and there was no length limit and the limit was 30 a day. Hadn't fished it much after that until the last few years, but certainly can't complain about my trips.

    What's Cooking?

Dang good ain't they? We also had some appetizers consisting of half a jalapeno with seeds removed and filled with a blob of cream creese. Add a handfull of btown sugar, wrap in bacon and grill. Awesome poppers.
  7. Hope you like them. Don't guess I ever paid any attention to how they looked though.
  8. LOL, my son is 19 and and his average is wayyyy worse! I am thinking that his 870 must not fit him at all.
  9. Dove breast marinated in Italian dressing, a slice of jalapeno in the middle and wrapped in bacon. Hot grilled to medium rare. Many a person who said dove isn't fit to eat has changed their mind after a dove popper.
  10. Awesome weather for sure. We hunted a large Conservation Area. Lots of doves flying until abut 9 am, ran out of doves and hunters to keep them.flying. son and I killed a limit between us. I had opted to leave my normal 12 ga. 11-87 at home and hunt with my old side by side 20 ga for nostalgia sake. Cost me some doves for sure, but don't regret it for a second. The whole group (15 or so ended up meeting up to clean doves and cook them up for lunch. Rest a bit then some of them make another nearby hunt while my son and I usually stay at "camp" to make sure nobody's messes with our stuff. Then everyone comes back for supper, our traditional crawfish boil. I may have eaten too much! Got to see friends I don't see nearly enough, do some shooting, spend some time with my 19 yr old son, I am a happy feller. Got pulled over in Pierce City on the way home by a very nice lady officer who told me I had failed to stop completely at the stop sign, opened my mouth to deny it and then had to laugh, yep I sure did, right in front of her too. She gave me a warning g and sent me on my way. Going to take me half a day to unload my truck, and the cab smells like well it just smells. Tomorrow will be soon enough to worry about it. Hope everyone has a great and safe Labor Day Weekend.
  11. I am sitting in a dove field with my son, watching the sky turn from gray to pink. Fields arent near a good looking as normal but we tend to set away from the primo food plot war zones and pass shoot. Life is gods gentlemen. Good luck and be safe.
  12. Definitely, or a white swimming jig, or maybe a blue/chrome rattle trap. Them whites and hybrids have made a few trips when crappie wouldn't cooperate.
  13. darn, that is a tragedy for sure. Definitely will add a few prayers for the family.
  14. As I understand it the SWPA generation schedule is what is planned in advance. However that goes out the window if the need isn't there or if a need for more peak power arises. Coal and other plants don't have the quick response ability. Seldom will the COE simply run water for no reason, usually it's a high water condition or occasionally for water quality issues.
  15. I can only imagine the outcry if MDC started keeping all the large fish they shock. I think a lot of their walleye eggs come from below Truman when they shock in the spring. Are those lake or river fish, they certainly run up the river to spawn, can't go past the dam. Missouri is not at the prime point to produce many if any record fish. A few giants come from the big rivers, and a few from ponds. Yes genetics do play a role, but that is not the whole picture. Food amount and quality play into it, habitat, fishing pressure etc. Maybe all we need is for the big head and silver carp to infest the lakes and provide a high protein diet of baby carp for them to eat.
  16. The Annual Day Use pass is good at all COE managed areas, there are some areas that are out granted to another agency or run privately where it doesn't apply. Not a lot of them but a few.
  17. Was out last week, but not fishing. He lake above Lightfoot is always wall to wall young shad this time of year, all those crappie will have plenty to eat and grow. The old timers always said to throw something that wasn't shad like this time of year, i.e. craw cranks etc. I don't bass fish so can't really give much advice.
  18. Some states certainly have more liberal bag limits. In MO I don't have a problem with what is established.
  19. I think currently Stockton Fisheries Biologist is Todd Parnell, although I think he goes by Ben. A quick call to the Regional Office in Spfld will get you his email and or phone number.
  20. LEDS are definitely brighter and easier, but the hiss of a row of gas mantles is just cool.

    What's Cooking?

Oh I know it's just the name and in my head. Growing up I had a poster that said "real men don't eat quiche". Thank goodness it didn't say "real men don't eat steak".

    What's Cooking?

The bowl of veggies look good, can't quite come to terms with quiche, although everything in it sounds good.
  24. I have a thing about trees growing next to my house, they get the kiss of death. I did get some turnips planted, threw in some lettuce and spinach because why not. Cukes and little maters are still going well and the wild flower patch. Rest may have died from neglect.
  25. I would happily watch, but nope not for me. Nice fish though.
