  1. The old timers used to say tha in the Ozarks we are never more than 2 weeks from a drought or 2 hrs from a flood.
  2. All it took was a massive flood.
  3. I am not a very good "God's plan" person , we have free will, we can rape, murder and be bad as we wish and as we are willing to face man's justice for those actions. As for temps on the poles, well I don't know the exact trends, but a lot of the polar ice and glacial ice is well removed from the actual poles so a few degrees change can make a big difference. My personal outlook is that I don't believe man is the sole source for climate change, but no question we have had an effect through our actions. And more short term, changes in farming, concrete and asphalt jungles etc. have certainly changed things, more people and more available water on the surface of the planet allows more water vapor to be picked up by the armosphere, more water plus warmth equals more energy available to come together in severe storms. Whether we accept climate change or not we are still stewards of our environment and planet, surely the least we can do it to try to make it better, now we just have to figure out and agree what better is.
  4. The only constant about climates is change. I have no doubt that many factors combine to make rain events more calamitous, many of which you already mentioned.
  5. Dam design and operation are two different things. Every major dam has some sort of design or construction issue, the COE is known for safe operation, sometimes to annoying degrees but I don't believe the COE has ever had a dam failure thus far.
  6. Most Doomsday Articles Are More Doom Than fact. Fort Peck has so far taken the worst nature has thrown at it and performed exactly as designed. Could an earthquake fail it, sure, a big enough earthquake could fail any if them. If there us one thing the COE is "anal" about it is dam safety.
  7. Lower end is pretty clear right now. And there is a lot more of it.
  8. Inflows are dropping, not as fast as we would like, but still dropping. Lake level a few minute ago was 863.25, we are in the process of increading outflow back up to 3500 CFS, should flatten out and catch the rise late today or early tomorrow. 14 day weather forecast is looking good, but will take a while to get back to "normal". I don't think we will make it to 864.
  9. Record pool is 864.58 I believe in 1993. Right now no idea other than it will rise some more. Won't even have a guess until it quits raining. Inflows are picking up, outflow is down to minimum, yep she is gonna rise.
  10. Of course that value is probably the wholesale value, may be way more at the market price or even more as peak power. Mailman I aint going there.
  11. Ahhh the joys of dock ownership, just be wary of electricity under conditions like you have now.
  12. Vernon I had to laugh, not the first time that has happened. Plain old politics as usual. Praise from a politician is usually a prelude to public/media bashing of same.

    What's Cooking?

Oh man I LOVE good grits, cheesy ones are even better and nothing is lost by the addition of shrimp. Save me some leftovers sir.
  14. Vernon, thanks for giving some explanation, I have mostly stayed out of it this time. You are correct in that the "plan" is the driving force by regulation and has some impact even into lawsuits. As long as the approved plan is being followed the COE has some legal protections, begin to go outside of the plan and it causes damage upstream or downstream suddenly there are possible legal ramifications. There is also a point where the protection of the dam itself becomes priority number 1, in reality it is always the primary concern, however in most situations it isn't a concern. Predicted rainfall regardless of how accurate it turns out to be is something that plays into planning for what could happen but isn't something that is used in current operations. It makes a big difference how and where the rain falls, over the whole drainage basin, over part of it, the intensity and duration etc. The lake is currently doing exactly what it was designed to do and more, the current is somewhere around 120% of its rated flood storage. (Taken from Phil info) Honestly I am surprised they haven't increased releases to the 2015 levels or more.
  15. It will definitely be a different lake then, likely will still be very high and hopefully falling hard.
  16. If you are a paid camper you should receive a tag for your vehicle to hang and show you don't owe a separate fee.
  17. Yesterday we were predicting 855 and we blew through that this morning. With the way the rivers are running I would expect 860. Crews are working hard checking downstream conditions to be able to slowly increase outflows back up.
  18. If my memory is solid (questionable) 3 days to hatch under good condition and roughly 7 days to become mobile, so they should be all right. I know the 2015 high water has produced a huge number of now 2 yr old crappie.
  19. Seems like every high water year results in a bumper crop of fish.

    What's Cooking?

Not my idea of fine quisine, however a good aged steak yeah I could do that. Some days its the simple things though, came home last night, damp, and tired, walked into the house and the smell of the beef roast in the crock pot was the most wonderful thing I could think of. If I could make a fragrace that smelled like roast, fresh bread, and strong coffee I would be rich.
  21. If Taneycomo doesn't get blown out the trout fishing ought to be good in a day or 2 as well.
  22. Not sure how much they can actally do. Didn't get much last night mostly noise, however this morning it has been raining hard.
  23. Like you said very weather/temperature dependent. If warm enough I will wear a pair of Teva sandals or lightweight water shoe. Basically something I can get wet with no problem. Especially when launching by myself. If it is wet weather I have been known to wear rubber boots and keep feet dry, especially if wearing a rain suit.
  24. Well call him back this is an opportunity for some additional income, yiu can be his local guide, I will come down to act as interpreter as he ain't gonna understand a thang any of you fellers say, he eventually decides it's a bull shark that has been eating kayaks and cows. We all drink a little corn likker and wear cut off bib over alls. It will fit right in with the show.
