  1. Love watching the A10s. I do a lot of trimming on,white bass fillets to remove the red meat, makes a lot of difference in the taste. The will never be as good as bluegill but not bad.

BH, I seem to default to grilled fillets of whatever swims way more than I used to, don't know if it's a change in my palate or what.

Mmmmm, if I wasn't already full I would be drooling. I love that kind of stuff.

    What's Cooking?

My wife is on Grandma duty so I am free to eat what I like. Last night after getting hime late from fishing, I was a little dizzy from low blood pressure or sugar so tonight I am gonna power up my blood. First wilted salad of the season, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and green onions, with a few capers and a little garlic. A small pork loin waiting to go on the grill and some corn on the cob because I like it. Wife wasn't thrilled when I sent her pics of the makings but I will survive due to not using the bowl of fresh crappie fillets in the bowl in the fridge. For beverage of choice, currently some Mountain Dew. Note there is nothing exotic, foreign or special abut this, but dang it will be delicious. Then I will have to clean my mess before she gets home, I can make a mess boiling water.
  5. It's a tough thing to have to deal with.
  6. Crappie and smallmouth, now that's a dream combination.

Sounds delicious. Fellers like me are still amazed that you can buy pickled grape leaves in a jar. I need to shop in nicer stores.
  8. It can happen with cold water/weather. On the other end I have taken small crappie from cold lake water carried them happy and swimming around up to an aquarium and dumped them in only to watch them go belly up within 30 seconds of hitting the much warmer water. I quickly learned to slowly acclimate them to the aquarium. Have seen fish like mentioned above dumped into a cooler with some ice and water to clean the next day and still have some very lively ones, never tried to release one as I didn't have a pond big enough for that.
  9. Excellent wording sir, I couldn't agree more.
  10. Well if it make YOU feel better you can leave the redneck part in. Susan is correct there is a group of folks who routinely open turkey season early, some are from out of state and quite well to do from appearances. I have met those guys wearing camo suits that cost more than my fishing rod and a backpack with various snack and beverages in it, that have driven down and happily trespassed across private property to access those places. Being paid well has zero to do with being raised right. Being raised to have respect does that. I will admit that it is more likely it was a couple of locals who left the trash, doesn't mean I will sit quietly by while someone paints with that wide of a brush. Litter bugs make my blood boil and I don't care what their ethnic, economic, or any other kind of "nic" background is. And yeah it kind of hit a nerve, so sorry if I went too far.
  11. But see I am the kind of guy who hates the clueless, overpaid, never learned to do real work, overly self important city scum who come down and are too good to be bothered to pick up their trash, and think they can buy their way into or out of anything.
  12. If I could figure out a way to consistently catch carp on a fly rod I might quit fishIng for anything else. I see the aluminum cans, worm containers etc. in places I don't even know how they walked in. We used to have an MDC Agent, one of his pet peeves was littering. A couple times a year he would hide in the woods above a popular bank fishing location with his binoculars and a notebook. Folks who would leave and leave behind their trash would be met on the road out of the area. They always denied it, sometimes quite vociferously, he would route his nitebook, tell them when hey took the can out of the cooler, and when they set it down, and left.
  13. Have heard some reports from south of the 83 bridge above Fairfield of whites and some crappie off the banks. Warm weather the next few days should light them up.

    What's Cooking?

I had a bit eclectic meal tonight. Wife had put an arm roast in the crock pot this morning, and made a big batch of sticky white rice, both of which I love. Then said the mushrooms are yours to fix while I make gravy. Fixed about half of the bowl of morels to go with everything. Very very soon I will be adding wilted lettuce salad to the menu as there is now enough, radishes be danged, if they don't grow fast enough they can get left out.
  15. It would work quite well for "stills" not so much for action shots. I actually Houghton about you Vernon yesterday, I finished rigging up some of my fishing rods and right next to the boat was a set of golf clubs, teed one up and now it is somewhere down in my pasture. I thkught, now all I need is a Ranger boat. I already have a Jayhawk hat but not because I cheer for them, except their nurses and doctors.
  16. Its always very condition dependent as well. Right now my places are dry again, need another rain and more would pop. Also early in the season they will tend to be in more open spots that get more sunlight, as the soil warms the "fruits" will tend to be more in shady places, usually ones that have thorns like Multiflora Roses, or maybe mine are just in some sort of symbiotic relationship with them.
  17. Nice mix of blacks and whites looks like.
  18. That is pretty much what I do in warm weather, a cooler with ice. Otherwise I don't have a live well, I have a death well. I don't do tournaments so if I start keeping them generally it isn't gonna end well for the fish. I have no problem going fishing for crappie, white bass or what ever with no intent of keeping rhem, happily catching and returning. Yes it is illegal to cull, certain times and types get abused more, crappie and white bass to be specific.
  19. I am not even sure what gear ratios I own. I don't however like to switch back and forth once I have found my rhythm. Thus I seem to have several of the Pfleuger Presidents and for BC 3 old Shimano curados. Crankbaits i tend to go more by how it feels than how fast I crank.
  20. Actually that is legal I believe, as long as the fish are alive. Otherwise it would fall into wanton waste.
  21. OK, to me a "good" fisherman is one who can adjust to moment. I know guys who can go with me and won't adjust to how I am catching fish, they will stick to their method and never adjust. Good fisherman can analyze and adjust to what is needed to catch fish. How good they are at that makes the difference between good and expert. I have been the guy who absolutely refused to change how I was fishing because I just knew my way was going to pay off, all the while watching a buddy whacking fish after fish. Any more I am pretty quick to copy them if what I am doing isn't working. If what I am doing is working for me and theirs is working for them, I will probably stick to my way as I usually prefer my own style.
  22. Happens every year, turkey hunters and mushroom hunters mostly. Mushroom guys are always looking down and poking around in the leaves etc. Still would give a feller the heebee jeebees to roll out a human skull. I have rolled out a plastic doll head and it was enough to give me the creeps for a minute.
  23. I am a "lucky angler", some days it's good luck some days it's bad luck, but even the bad days I enjoy. I have absolutely no illusions about being an expert at anything. When fishing stops being fun I will stop fishing.
  24. The stream gauges do provide a lot of very valuable data, and yes they are not cheap, currently our office is responsible for 4 of them. I hate to see any of them go away, but without a sponsor paying for the upkeep of them that is what is going to happen.
  25. I was loving the rainy cloudy cold fronts as long as the walleye were up close to the bank, cold front don't bother them and it keeps other fisherman away. Now I just want some sunshine.
