  1. Its a bad deal all around, I have been trying to follow some of it, well because I like dams. The regular spillway that had a major sinkhole or collapse started the issue. They stopped releasing water through it to evaluate it, and quickly discovered that there was no quick fix. Realizing that the emergency spillway was likely to get used they began to quickly clean it up, removing trees etc, and shoring up the lip of it with boulders and concrete. According to reports so far it has been holding and not head cutting, also last report mentioned that the level dropped back to 901 which is the level of the uncontrolled emergency spillway. Should they have been better prepared, sure, is it an easy thing to do, no its not. Trying getting a few million to fix a known problem when you are in a drought. Now the repair costs will be probably over a 100 million if not more. The regular spillway has been essentiall y destroyed and not sure how much damage to the emergency spillway. Tons and tons of silt, rock, dirt etc. have been added to the feather river downstream. Is it possible for such a thing to happen to Ozark area dams, yes it is possible but very unlikely, the COE is manic about dam safety, we also have a lot more native rock around to stabilize things. Lakes such as TR have the ability to dump a huge amount of water through them, and no long spillway to have to contend with. If memory serves TR can dump over 500,000 CFS through the gates, way more than they have ever released. The only COE lakes I am aware of that has had significant flows through their uncontrolled emergency spillway are Tuttle Creek and Milford in KS.

    Rumor

I would be very surprised if there were immediate plans for anything remotely like that. Unless its an emergency there would be a flood of news releases and articles about it well before it happened. The single biggest rumor that goes around on COE Lakes is "They are going to lower the lake 10 feet to fix the dam" or something very similar. They might be planning something but again I would expect there to be a large public announcement about it before it actually happens.

Delicious looking mzrealfish. Mitch I would right there fighting for it too.
  7. There are several bait shops to check with around truman, fellers may have to help me with the names, I know Everhart's in Clinton, maybe the station bait and tackle below the dam was one out past longshoal on 7 but can't remember the name of it either and any marina you use will have info as well. Dont be afraid to trailer your boat to another area , even over to LOZ if they aren't cooperating where you are, she can be good and bad on the same day just in different spots. I am much more familiar with the Pomme arm from around Fairfield/Osage bluff on up than the rest, closer to home for me.
  8. I will agree with that. Real, repeatable, hard scientific data over a wide range of habitat would take many years to accumulate and quantify. And I would even agree that many streams were better some years back. River ecosystems change and evolve, pollution, gravel, flooding, predarion, riparian development, fishing pressure all have their effects. Would stream specific regs be more beneficial, I would say yes, however the state does try to avoid have too much of a variety of regs for folks to figure out, and I understand that. There will ALWAYS be a trade off with the political ramifications. Completely banning harvest of smallmouth and goggle eye for a period of 2 years might have a tremendous effect (unlikely it would be as much as we would like), but that would be a very tough sell to the public.

Negative on that, just pop.it into the freezer, I will send you my address so I can dispose of it for you. Looks very very tasty sir.
  10. I am going to dial.it back some as well and plant mostly things I really like, maters, corn, cukes and squash and Cantelouopes . I will have plenty of the early greens as well, mostly lettuce and spinach. Am also going see if I can find some more oddball maters like the purple cherokee again or hopefully some black krims. I may also do some jungle garden with the left over space, I dI'd it a few years ago and it was surprisingly successful. Take a bunch of leftover seeds and simply broadcast them in the leftover space and let them go, they don't get watered or tilled. If they make great if not that's OK too. Always say I am gonna plant soybeans in that extra space but never do. Maybe even the my new blackberries will hit the ground running, and it the dang japanese beetles will.leave me alone might get some peaches, cherries and apples. Asparagus beds have some new stock so will see what happens with it, and the strawberries are almost always good. Hmmm doesn't sound like I am cutting back now that I type it out.
  11. Sorry not much help on the lodgings as it is close by for me so I don't have to stay anywhere. However mid April should put you into some crappie, gravel spawning banks should be solid gold by then. Also don't be afraid to throw some crankbaits near some main lake points that are shallow and have deeper water close by, throw shallow right up to the edge of the water, and crank it fairly slowly back, you might well end up with a toothy critter or two as bonus. The big question that time of year is always weather and lake condition, Truman could be normal or 20 plus feet high, water anything from beautiful to mud. Check with the local bait shop right before you come down and get some fresh intel. Truman can be fabulous and put out a lot of nice fish in a hury, it can also leave you wondering you took up fishing instead of golf.
  12. Often you will need to add some lime if you are adding oak leaves, they have a tannic acid that will lower the PH. I am hoping to get my cold frame cleared out, fluffed up and maybe almost ready to plant some lettuce, radishes, spinach etc. it in very soon.
  13. Way to go oneshot!
  14. Wow, nice ones. I kind of like panfish myself.
  15. When I get to the piece of water I am gonna fish I have a habit of scooping up a handful of mud, sand, gravel whatever I can and scrubbing my hands with it, rinse off in the water and go fishing. Does it help? No clue but like scents I often use it dont hurt anything and makes me feel better.
  16. Chief has posted pics with a shirt on. There were no sleeves in it, but technically he did have a shirt. I love catching 8 inch bass out of tiny water on my old 5 foot UL rod, sometimes a 9 inches would be a whopper.
  17. Hey, how come I have to be the reasonable one. Go Hillary.
  18. I would bet that their sampling method and system would easily pass a peer review. Mostly they went into the study with no bias, relying simply on the scientific data. Their purpose in the regs were to make the best use for everyone, not a specific group or groups. Is there some inadequacy in some of their methods almost surely, the single best way to know what is in a 100 yard stretch of river is to kill everything and count it, but surprisingly they didn't want to do that. Also they didn't want to spend the next 20 years try to be more thorough. Some of us, myself included have an inborn bias about things, doesn't make it biologically sound but doesn't change my feelings.
  19. LOL, I have used my cigar to "cut" the tag end of the line before. And spit a goober of redman on more than one jig or lure, because why not.
  20. There are roughly 10 or so resorts right on the lake, plus at least one marina that has park models and cabins as well. Lets see how many I can remember. Highway 83/Hickory Ridge marina, Goodys, Cooper Cove, Stillwater, Sunflower, Anglers, Hickory Grove, Nemo Bridge, Willow Winds, Indian Hills. All of these have leases/docks on the lake. Plus there is the state Park marina, Nemo marina, and The harbor marina, if any of those ring a bell for him.
  21. The only resort on the water in Decker I can think of is Indian Hills Resort. I am not aware of any resort on the lake by the name of My Country. Now what may be off the lake and calling themselves that I have no clue, but I didnt find anything with a quick search. http://pommedeterrechamber.com/lodging.html
  22. I am assuming he is referring to Decker Branch on Pomme.
  23. Hmmm, never heard of that one.

    What's Cooking?

Wife had to gobtake care of sick grandson so tonight's quick hitter supper. Some pork chops that she had thawed and what goes with pork better than apples. So the chops get seasoned with cavenders and s/p into the cast iron skillet with bacon grease, apples sliced and into skillet with some butter, cinnamon, sugar and coca cola. Throw in some salad in a bag and boom supper. Snagged, no pantyhose or socks I promise.
  25. years ago I bought an old champion, had badly oxidized finish, spend about half the winter with an orbital buffer and buffing compound to remove the oxidation, then went back with a couple coats of good wax, think I used Nu Finish or Finish 2000 or something. It was a thing of beauty when done, or at least it was to me. Long gone now. Current aluminum boat I occasionally will give it a coating of pledge furniture polish on the gunwales and console but sure makes it slick. It lives inside so its not too bad for it.
