If looking stick burner.....Lang smokers with the reverse flow. Mine is a huge cheapo offset from Sams.with modifications . Made some mods to the flow, and put an expanded metal basket in the fire box big enough to hold a 1/2 bag of charcoal.. I fill the charcoal basket with unlit coals, load some lit coals on top of the basket and toss the wood on top...Will burn 6-8 hours no problem. Apple, Cherry, Pecan & White Oak mostly...Not much for Hickory...too bitter.

Another to look at is Gateway Drum Smokers out of Washington, MO. Our friends at Sahm Welding in Washington, MO do the manufacturing for the Blues Hog folks. Great folks. Mark's guys will build you anything you want, but you probably know a few good welders. Not sold on pellets....I like stick burners.

Pick one that introduces adults over 18 to hunting or fishing. Introducing kids is a good thing, but they cant afford it on their own. Kids might get a nice memory, and turn into sustainers, but the ones you really want have the fire/interest, a reliable vehicle, and a steady income stream. They can do it on their own.

Might try a Komodo, all that ceramic should hold temperature.

Did not see your time frame....Mid May-June would be better for smallmouth. Trout fishing will be better in March. You could do the NFOW again. and try for a mixed bag. There are smallmouth above and in the trout water on the NFoW, and on Bryant creek. Bryant Creek is a tributary of the NFoW (just over the ridge to the west). There are several public access points on the upper NFoW and the Bryant. Good Luck.

Wading streams start to get really slow this time of year. Allot of the bass seem to move down to the main river around Sept 15th...Creek mouths can be really good this time of year. I'd rent a canoe, float, and camp on the river. Gasconade, Meramec, and the James river systems usually produce the biggest fish, but you will have to share the river with other users. Gigging season is open, so expect some lights and jet boats at night. You can't gig in blue ribbon trout water....so maybe do that instead.

Yankee Jim Canyon on the Y Stone is a great float have done. Good for you! Bear Trap Canyon below Ennis Lake on the Madison is on my bucket list of floats. Requires a WW guide and raft for that. Some great memories at Slough Creek. Have hiked to third meadow. The fishing was a tad better but not by much. Always did better on the Lamar down by the park road. -

Black Marlin...Mitch, have a customer in Key West with a 36' Hinckley Picnic boat if you want to play "Old Man and the Sea". Dude, is a Hemingway fan, looks allot like him. Its a great boat. -

Have wade fished Quartz Creek and the Russian near Cooper Landing Alaska....Both easy to wade. Hooked a 40lb plus King on the Russian, decided to break it off of my 7wt. Had a couple more miles to wade and one rod. -

Marble Trout in Italy, Patagonia, or a week of tarpon, bone/or GT fishing are bucket list trips. Have done allot of travel fishing before kiddos...Alaskan salmon fishing is fun for a couple hours, but rainbow are the star of the show. Make sure you work in a halibut charter for the meat. The scenery on the fly out trips is outstanding. Would love to do a smallie/muskie or pike trip up north next year...Pretty cheap in comparison to guided fly fishing out west or in the salt. -
Caught an owl on a Jitterbug. Lost a little bit of blood and ruined a shirt releasing it. I also caught a bat on a dry fly during a guided drift boat trip in Ontario. My guide took care of that one.

Casting distance is key...If you cant cast 50'+ with your first cast and a 1/0 or #2 bass bug, you end up catching dinks. Bass bugging is a long range run and gun game. Best if you have a tandem canoe or jon boat...One paddles the boat, the other fishes. Its more productive than both of you fishing.

I fish a big chartreuse popper with rubber legs almost exclusively. A size 2 Sneaky Pete is hard to top if you don't make your own. A size 4 Sparkleminnow in Pearl, Brown & Orange, or Olive will do the trick if they wont eat on top. Fish both on a 9' 7wt and 3x. A half a dozen flies, and a spool of 3x in a shirtpocket is all you need.

They are Coppernose. Huge fish on that lake...8-10lb bass are not uncommon. The big ones eat trout. t

Camped & Fished there a couple times when stationed in CA....Huge gills, and Giant Spotted Bass! Good for you!

The Gasconade is an unusual river. It actually looses flow between Hwy 7 and the Narrows because about half of its flow goes underground. The flow comes back in through the 3 major springs below the Narrows.

Have seen folks run jets up from Riddle. I think it would be a bad idea to run up more that a couple miles above the Roubidoux. There is a nasty shoal about 2 miles down from the narrows.

Not much flow at Hazelgreen this time of year. Fine for canoe's and kayaks though.
