  1. Sounds interesting. I have not heard, but I could imagine it would be a good turnout.
  2. I would be equal to the three who had no idea. Is there a certain time of season, day, etc to plan for these hatches? I am a newb who has learned alot on here, but don't have any direct access to trout fishing up in the St Louis area. I would like to be prepared for the fall trip that I plan on going to a trout park. I generally like to go to Roaring River, but I seem to encourage the rain when I go. I went about 4 years ago and the left overs of Hurricane Ike came through there, and it was not a fun time in tents. The next year was just soaking rain, and needless to say, the kids really did not enjoy it.
  3. http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/rftmusic/2010/11/camp_zoe_site_of_schwagstock_f.php Some interesting information here concerning the seizure, and the laws used.
  4. Great article, I love the picture. The article is full of great info, thanks for sharing.
  5. LOL, looks like your recon has been intercepted. :-) I seen the same add a couple of days ago on St Louis Craigslist. I like the looks of his items.
  6. For those who wish to see them now, today, you can go to Lone Elk Park in St Louis County, Off of Hwy 44. (or 44 hwy for the rural members) The website is http://stlouisco.com/ParksandRecreation/ParkPages/LoneElk . It is a free park, donations are accepted. The wild bird sanctuary is right across the road, and is really neat also. There is an area in Lone Elk Park that you can exit your vehicle and walk on the road and be as close as you dare to the elk with no fence. There are trails to walk through the park also and the animals are familiar with people, so they will generally stay their ground. There are elk, deer, buffalo, turkey, and many other wildlife that are allowed to roam while you drive through the park kind of safari like. They can do damage to your car, beware. As far as Peck Ranch goes, I am in the wait and see campaign. I know that many other things MDC has done have had general outlash and then turned to benefit the state more than have negative effects. I would like to see a large elk roaming through the area freely, but I realize that we will have to pay for that benefit. I am not sure the cost outweighs the benefit at this time, but I will quietly wait and see. I do see a problem that does need addressed which is the human population. Not nessicarily the population, but the ability to live 3-5 times longer than we did as well as being immune to a good amount of the problems that used to have control of us. I know some here will nominate ME to make the first sacrifice, But it is illegal. I don't like to intentionally break the law.
  7. I don't know about things in AR, but in St Louis, When we get a "New Store" it may be open for a few weeks before the "Scheduled" Grand Opening. This may be something similar. I know it violates the term GRAND OPENING, but that is something I have seen more than once. It would be a smart marketing tactic to celebrate the opening on a holiday weekend.
  8. It is now your job to teach him defeat.... LOL I am trying to teach my boys how it feels to be skunked, but have yet to do it. They skunked me last year on fathers day, and I am still trying to make it up to them. Kinda hard when they know how to get a snag, but don't know how to tie a knot. Oh, well. Maybe this year.
  9. F&F, Good idea with the crazy glue, and with shrink tubing. I guess you have to be pretty darn careful if using a lighter to activate the shrink tubing, but it would serve great purpose. Gets me thinking on other uses for the stuff. I may post them later, as with most of my ideas, they become pretty dull when actually put to use. As far as knots go, I have used the improved clench knot for as long as I can remember. (except when I was tying 3 or 4 overhand knots. ;-) I have seen the others, but just like my zebco 33, I found what works for me and I continue to use it.
  10. Good job, could not have said it better myself.
  11. I was wondering the same thing.
  12. Another tip we learned in leader training was to use water bottles (the kind that clip) and fill them with G.O.R.P. Good O'l Raisins and Peanuts. They do not require refrigeration, and they will keep the boys comfortable (hunger wise). You may look into some umbrellas or a way to divert the sun ahead of time. You probably already have thought about it, but you will be in the sun almost all day every day. Sunburn and dehydration will be a very real threat. One idea on that would be to use the rain fly from your tents and use maybe some pvc to create a frame to hold the fly to make a bimini top. Talk to some local businesses, and maybe you can get tarp or pvc donated electrical conduit would work also it would be cheaper and stronger, but weigh more. Zatarains makes some good flavor meals with rice (in my opionion) and they are reasonable if you catch them on sale. Or you can get ideas from their flavors and duplicate them. As has been said earlier get input from the boys, as if they aren't happy.......... Yeah. Man, I am really excited for you guys, my boys are not ready for that yet, I may have one or few, but most are within a couple years out of Webelos. Don't forget a foot ball and frisbee. You may want to learn a few card games also. Keep them BUSY.
  13. Great contribution to the site.
  14. Pasta gets old, but it is filling and it can be made with the water that you purify. Tuna can be brought along also. Check somewhere like Sams for chicken in a can (the large cans), you can make many dutch oven meals with chicken and Rice/pasta. Talk to a few restaurants about some donations of food. You can plan ahead and keep some cold goods for the first couple of days, and use them first. Many fruits and vegetables can be kept without being kept cold. Don't forget good ole peanut butter and jelly. Let the boys be creative in thier ideas and they will enjoy it more so also. You can bring tortilla shells and make pizzas with pizza sauce and cheese if it is within the first couple of days. Just keep the coolers wrapped in sleeping bags and they will maintain the cold longer. I read on here that a wet towel over the cooler makes a tremendous difference, I have yet to try it. Block ice is also gonna last longer than ice cubes and you can make your own block ice with water bottles. Fill them 3/4 and do not cap them in the freezer. When frozen, cap them and use them as you would any type of ice. When they melt, you can use it as clean water. Sorry kinda went on a rant, hope you can use at least one item here. Have fun, be safe.
  15. LMAO good code there F&F, I haven't been to any of the locations listed, but just from hanging in here, I feel like I know exactly where your referencing. Probably a good idea to keep "non members" from stealing info covertly. DC over and out.
  16. I have read/heard/seen a tip of using garlic flavored Pam cooking spray or equivalent for spraying the scent on artificial baits. The idea is that it costs much less and produces the same results. Just passing it along. I used to try BaitMate, but I never noticed any benefit. It leaked in my tacklebox, (my fault), and so then I just quit trying.
  17. I guess we learn something new everyday. :-) That wood be a good theory Outside Bend. Bird Watcher, I am familiar with the thawing process of ruptured cells, my main complaint with frozen vegtables. Ndietiker, That really is a shame that you lost so much of the weight due to the offices being closed.
  18. What I tend to believe is that items when frozen will weigh the same as when they were not frozen. Meaning, if you were to weigh 5 oz of water and freeze the 5 oz of water, then weigh it as ice, it will still be 5 oz. The physical diminsions will be larger, and less dense (more bouyant), but the weight will not change. I could see losing weight if it was left in the sun, and dried out, but to be frozen, I don't believe it would lose weight. If we were talking about Dry Ice, then maybe the difference in weight would work against my statement, but we are not. I believe that there may have been a variation in the accuracy of the scales that were used. Congrats anyhow, now you have a record to re-gain, not many people have that opportunity.
  19. That is neat. What does SOF stand for?
  20. I recomend the Titanic Museum, and if it is still there, Ripleys Believe it or Not. I would tell you to do one or the other, as they both take a few hours to go through thoroughly, and can be mentally exausting :-). I wanted to check out the wax museum, but did not have time. Silver dollar city has alot to see and enjoy. I like the info given by the locals on the board, they would know best.
  21. Many interesting points have been brought up, and as was stated in the original post I am no biologist. I have read many good arguements for the initial ban. I have learned quite a bit from the responses and I still feel there may be a solution, although it may not be cheap. The reason I said the ban may be an attempt to hurt small business is a broad one. But to try to give one possible situation, we all know the little guys are generally more expensive than the megastores. The megastores generally are a few more miles from most of us and we would not go to them in order to get some live bait if we plan to fish close to the house, or in the other direction. I may go to my local tackle dealer for worms/minnows/crawdads/crikets etc, and while I'm there stock up on some hooks/sinkers etc. Now, if I did not need live bait, I would not have went to my local. So, take away the live bait, and I may not go to the small guy unless I needed hooks right now. Mega stores know this and if they can control the way we shop, they can shut down small business and then we have no option. Al, Catfisherman use crawfish, usually they just use the tails, by doing so, the crawfish is not a threat in this situation.
  22. I read that data on the sales, and I asked the gentleman about that, he explained to me, that of all of the certified dealers, MDC only surveyed approx 15%, and of the ones who answered, he believes they probably sandbagged the amount they claimed to have sold. The reason they may have sandbagged is that they may not have wanted to give away their trade secrets. Anyhow, I am not trying to start another debate, that was not the reason of my initial post. ( I guess I should have kept my ideas out of it, hind sight is always 20/20) I just wanted to inform everyone that there is a petition available for those interested.
  23. Hi all, I want to let you know that there is a petition to allow the sale of live crawdads available at Paul's Bait and Tackle in St Louis. I stopped in there yesterday to look around and get a couple of items. I was talking to one of the owners and he was explaining the reasoning for the petition and I really feel more needs to be explained as to why this ban was put in place. I am no biologist, nor have I done full studies, but the ban has been suspended, so just for that reason alone, I believe that it was a knee jerk reaction to ban the sale/use. I am a small business owner myself, and I feel maybe this ban may be an attempt from a large corp to try to slow down the need to go to the local shops. Maybe I am wrong, but as was debated a few months ago, there are other things that can be threatening the other craw fish. One interesting point that was brought up in conversation with the owner was that you can purchase live crawfish and have them shipped to your doorstep. I am no biologist and I would not be able to tell you what crawfish would possibly pose a threat and which ones would not. If you get a bad shipment, you have the local live bait and tackle dealers who deal in the sales on a daily basis who would be better qualified to identify the wrong ones. BTW, I understand the ban also addresses the transportation of crawfish from one location to another. Just a thought and wanted to let those who oppose the ban have a chance to voice thier opinion also. For those for the ban, you can go into the shop also, I'm sure they will be happy to talk to you as well.
  24. Nice report, thank you. I like your method of getting back into fly fishing. I am still new to it, I have caught 1 small bass on it, but nothing else yet. I am getting better, but it only gets used a couple of times a year.
