AMERICAN CARP SOCIETY, the Trout unlimited of carp angling
fishinwrench replied to MoCarp's topic in Throw It Down
MoCarp seems pretty thick skinned and is probably as hard to get rid of as his favorite fish species. He ain't gonna get all butthurt and go nowhere. Y'all just go right ahead with your trash fish love, it isn't hurting anybody. 😊 -
The BilletHead version of the Shuttlecock, a step by step.

Yeah I can see where that little bit of weight back there could close the deal. Those collar rattles are the only thing on the list that I don't have, and probably can't get around here without buying jigs to rob them off of. I'll have to put some on the list for my next material buying spree. -

Good stuff. I love it. Not sure how I feel about the rattle (noise-wise) but I'm wondering if the weight of it back there at the bend is an important feature. -
Oh I totally dig hooking into big hybrids, my only concern is that they might pass on traits of their breeding deficiencies to the native White bass. I don't really like being dependant on stockings from hatcheries to maintain a healthy fish population. There's just something way cooler about catching fish that were born and bred naturally in the water where I'm fishing. And as MDC has indicated before.....if their budget ever gets cut then they'll gate up the accesses that we already paid for, and I'm sure they'll stop stocking those freight trains for you to play with. The native fish that are capable of sustaining themselves are all you're gonna have, so I think it's important to not jack them up.

It obviously doesn't mean that it is not occuring either. How were those studies conducted ? If you're not sure how the studies were done could you please link me to where you learned about the studies and their conclusions? Thx.

The river has been crazy low for quite awhile, and the fish count, from what I can tell, has been pretty low. Definitely still worthwhile, just a little more challenging.

Lemme guess.... Shad swim in circles because they don't know which way the wind is blowing?

Well it HAS been done... -
Do they specifically breed a big batch of trout for this, or are they just taken from our regular broods? I have a short list of inquiries about the urban trout program, but I don't know whether to ask questions.... or axe kwersions.

It's not conjecture at all. I believe very little of what I hear or read (about anything) until I've confirmed it enough to satisfy myself. If what you are saying is true then where have all the pure White Bass gone? Because happening into a school of them is becoming more rare each year in the Gravois arm of LO. There's one other thing about the mutts I am referring to....I don't think they grow to typical Hybrid Striper size. About 19-20" seems to be the limit. Just for clarity they have not stocked Hybrid Stripers on this end of the lake for over 7 years (more like 10-12 years.. but I'm not 100% sure). I very seldom catch a stocked Hybrid Striper in the upper Gravois. Pure Stripers are more likely than Actual Hybrid Stripers. Most everything I catch is a mutt that is not a White, nor a Hybrid Striper, it just HAS TO BE a cross between the two. When the Hybrid Stripers were here we stood on the bridge and on the banks and watched them shadow the female whites and blow jizz all over them, then within 2 years we started catching these quivering mutts.....and now that's almost all you'll catch up here. So call that conjecture if you want, but I'm reasonably convinced that what I'm saying is accurate. I love catching them, and they eat just as good as they ever did, but a change is obvious to someone that has been chasing them for awhile, and messing around with the genetics of native species just kinda puts a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not confident that the change will be for the better in years to come. And it simply can not be taken back, it's forever. Since it is known that Hybrids have successful breeding deficiencies in our waterways do we really want those genes spread to native Whites who have done quite well for howevermany years? I don't believe we do. That's a gamble that I don't feel comfortable doubling down on, and I'm sad that "educated and experienced" guys like you are just fine with it. Even if you disbelieve or give no merit to anything I've said then please answer one simple question..... Why introduce Hybrid Stripers? What good is going to come from it? I'm not in favor of it, and I'd prefer to not be forced to help pay for it

I have quite a few days in a years time where color most definitely matters, so I'm inclined to believe that it always matters. White bass, Crappie, and Trout ALWAYS have a definite color preference that changes periodically, so I'm sure that all species do. As for red hooks and other reflective surfaces that are colored red, I'd say that the color is more distinguishable and could definitely be a trigger. Anyone who has ever tracked a deer at night knows that shiney wet red stuff reflects light like crazy. -
The Lion and Bengal Tiger people were down P rd. As far as I know Jimmy (my ex-neighbor) never had any cats, but he had just about everything else. And the critters were always getting loose. It was common to wake up in the morning and have peacocks on my porch, or a Zebra, Llama, or Giraffe in my yard. Looking back that was alot of fun/excitement. The kids loved it.

They see it just fine, whether it looks red to them is questionable. Probably just looks gray. I mean if they see crawdad whiskers.... -
Taking steps. I like that cliche, I'm going to start using that myself. To those on here that are irritated by me.....Know that I'm taking steps to rectify and mend that.

Well, the folks that are supposed to do that are too busy using our money to teach city kids about birds.
-
Points taken. But MDC's job is to tend to the welfare of birds.....not to teach your kids that birds exist. (That's your job). The library and the internet are loaded with free bird information, so we don't need to pay MDC to teach people about birds. Agree? They took that job on themselves in an attempt to move money around and have a way of justifying it. Nobody ever requested that from them.

Don't make a bad situation worse by incriminating yourself. Glass Bottles on the river are illegal now. They were plastic bottles, right?

Hey! Like I told that other guy.... Keep your eyes forward, Gazer..... or go do your pissing across the hall with all the other bitches. -
That's the part that drives me crazy. Everytime you criticize the MDC there's always someone that gets all defensive saying "How can you complain about them after the cool things that they do?" Well hell yeah they do some cool things! Who wouldn't if they had even a fraction of the amount of funding to play with? They also make sure to propagandize it to death so that everyone knows that they do the occasional cool thing. " Awe look, they did something sweet for disabled children"..... can't criticize them NOW or you're just a politically incorrect, unpatriotic dirty rotten heathen that has no heart. That's called head games in my book and you can think whatever you want about me, but I just don't gobble that BS up like most people do. The fact of the matter is that THEY didn't do it, you and I did.... because it's our dough that they did it with....and THEY profited (got paid) while doing it.

No, but there's a stilt in our airbed.....and I want to keep it in one piece as long as I can. -
There is that ! Lotta fun. I'm just not convinced that it's a smart thing to do.
