  1. Congrats again. Been seeing a lot of 20+inch brown trout this year so far. Great looking fish. Hope that you catch a bigger one.

    What's Cooking?

Dang Ness those are good looking plates of food!
  3. There is an open season for them that is a little bit different than the whitetail season. They are found in just a few counties. They are creatures of the swamp and difficult to hunt due to the places that they like to live. One of the species that I definitely want to harvest. Little Asian Elk!
  4. We got a break in the cold temps with highs near 60 deg today. I missed going out and trying to catch the incoming tide on Sat. Trying to make up for that today. It was warm enough to convince Lvie to come with me and fish. I have been researching target fish species in the creeks and rivers in Maryland using a stream health website that details the fish and invertebrates collected at sites from all over the state. I have a creek chub sucker as one of my targets for this year and I found a stream near our house where several have been collected previously. Since I was planning on going for these guys, I brought along the redworms. What I did not account for was the rain that we got last night and this morning. The creek was running muddy as were most of the small waters that we passed over. Still we soaked some worms and did not get a bite. I will try this creek again since it looks to have some great potential in new species for us. Livie wants to go back to recover something that she found while getting down to the creek. She found this roadkill Sika stag. These Asian deer have established breeding populations here in Maryland since the turn of the century. I did not know that they were established in our county. If we had a couple of bags and a saw it's likely this guy would have been in the car. We buried it with leaves and plan on returning for it later. After several non-eventful casts we pulled out and headed to a local lake to find some clear water and active fish. We started fishing one of the creek inlets into the lake. Like the other creeks it was running muddy. In fact it was muddying up the lake. Made some casts but no bites. We walked around a section of the lake that I have not fished before and found that there was a pond next to the lake. The pond looked clear and we found an opening in the wooded bank to make some casts. Looked good. I could see that there were green furled leaves under the water. This pond was shallow and will likely be covered in lotus leaves in the summer . Better fish it now. I was fishing a rod that was given to me from a friend. It was one of his dad's rods and I wanted to knock the dust off of it by catching some fish. We stuck with the worms. I quickly caught a bluegill. Then Livie caught one as well. My next fish was a golden shiner (a first one of this species in Maryland). Then Livie caught one as well. After that it was on. Livie even got her line draped over a couple of thin branches and caught a bluegill while trying to get the line out of the tree. I had her get the fish up out of the water and swing it. I could get my rod to catch the fish and line and pull them to her. She released the fish and got the line out of the tree amid some slight hysteria. On her next cast she caught her first black crappie of the year. I was surprised that it took the worm and so was Livie. We caught a few other fish, shiners and bluegill, but the bite slowed and Livie was concerned about hanging up in the trees. So we moved to a spot that i thought looked more open. It was and there were fish waiting to bite here as well. At this time Livie had nine fish and I had caught seven. The goal was to be the first to a dozen fish. I would catch up and Livie would catch one more. She hit 12 as I was reeling up my 11th. I stated that the fact that I had to go back and rebait my hook allowed her to win. Of course that led to quite a bit of trash talk by my daughter about being more efficient in the use of her worms . After I had caught my 14th fish, I switched to a black and green trout magnet while Livie kept throwing the worms. I caught 6 fish on seven casts. The first five fish were all different species. I caught my first largemouth bass in Maryland (a giant for sure). Followed that up with a golden shiner on the next cast. On the third cast came a nice chunky redear sunfish. Not as big as some of those that @JUNGLE JIM 1 catches in MO, but a nice small pond fish for sure. A black crappie was the fourth fish and then two bluegill. Since I had some work to do at home, we had to call it at 4 pm. We each ended up with 20 fish and Livie's was her only bass for the day. Definitely ended up being a great day with my daughter catching fish!
  5. QB nice report. Glad that you got into a few. Though I did catch a third the number of bass as you did and from the bank in shallow water ! It was a giant !
  6. Great job Lance! Adapt and overcome. We may have found a small pond with fishable black crappie here in MD. Won't be pulling big stringers, but may make a meal or two if there are some bigger ones.
  7. Awesome brown trout! Congrats!
  8. I am not a crowded stream front fishetman any more. So have always stayed away from the openers at the parks. Been fishing down on the White river and my filght back to Maryland is on Tues. So stopped in Lebanon as a good middle ground. Was originally planning and may still go out the park today when it gets above 10 deg maybe. So when I pulled into Lebanon yesterday and it was a balmy 24 deg with much colder temps coming I got out the the park in the afternoon. Got out by 4:30 and fshed for just over an hour when the dipping sun and the cool wind drove me to warmer temps. Water was a little stained making it hard for me to see the fish react to my baits. I chose a white microjig. That's my typical go to bait to start. If there are active fish I can usually fool a few. Started on the whistle bridge and had that section of creek all to myself for a while. Some fish seemed tired from the onslaught but I found and landed four takers on that bait. After the third fish a couple of guys showed up to fish. I tried for some sculpin by bouncing it next to a large dock. One would rush the bait but not really bite then back under the rock. Had another smaller one creep up in the bait and never commit. Bery skittish and not sure why. Switched to a yellow/pink/fuchsia globall and got one 14 inch rainbow to bite. Headed upstream closer to the spring and switched to a cream chenille microjig grub. The water was stained worse up there and the wind picked up. Only fish that I caught was an Ozark sculpin. We'll see if I get out again today.
  9. @Jhoff Congrats on a great day of fishing with your boy! I'm sure that you made some great memories.
  10. Good looking browns. Congrats!
  11. I also heard that Bruce Dern hated that film and regretted being part of it because he became a public enemy for killing John Wayne. Also that John Wayne reeked of whiskey when he told Dern about folks hating him for killing Wayne's character as they shot that scene.
  12. I have a tough time putting any of the comic book hero movies into the same mix as movies like the Quiet Man or Cool Hand Luke. It's almost like they are guilty pleasure movies. I enjoy most of them and have seen several like the Avengers over and over again.
  13. I do like Predator but think that Alien was a better horror movie.
  14. I would suggest getting a 7 foot Browning Airstream. Bass pro sells then for $59.99 but often has them on sale for $49. They are lightweight rods with a lot of sensitivity and a decent backbone for good hooksets and able to land big fish. Lots of the fish photos on the Jigfest threads were landed with Airstream rods.
  15. Congrats Quill! Nice day out on the lake buddy!

    What's Cooking?

Last night was we needed to use some leftovers. Had pork loin roast leftovers. I sliced the roast into 1/4" slices and sliced an onion. Those got sauted in a cast iron pan until the meat was browned. Added a pork brown gravy and into the oven. Made mashed potatoes and steamed some sugar snap peas. Served the meat and gravy over the potatoes. Salt and pepper to taste .

    What's Cooking?

Yesterday made a quick soft scramble with Folly Farm fresh eggs with a little Old bay, red pepper flakes, and garlic powder. Added shredded smoked cheddar cheese courtesy of @WoundedOne . Taking photo tips from @Terrierman
  18. Looking at the regulations it appears that trout in lakes 3, 22, and 23 can be harvested at any time. Whereas lakes 21 and 28 are catch and release until Feb 1st. Could be confusing.
  19. In Colorado, maybe there is something in the water that gives them the munchies if you know what I mean ! Can you catch them on Dorito flies !
  20. The pools with the large schools of brookies that I fished on Mullen Creek in Wyoming would scatter when anything natural or otherwise hit the water. I had to find smaller schools and wait a bit after getting to a new hole to actually get to fish them. The ones in Western Maryland don't act that way. They seem to not bother a whole lot when you get to a new pool. So maybe the fish in that creek in Wyoming are the outliers. Out West eat them up. They are very tasty after spending their entire lives feeding of what the creek was providing. Here in Maryland treat them well and release. Go eat the stocker rainbows if you need trout to eat .
  21. Out west they are a bit spooky, but abundant. Usually can get them calm enough to catch a meal or two.
  22. Got out again today. It was 3 deg when I got up. About 9 am it was 5 with a feels like temp of minus 11. So I waited for it to warm up further. Headed out by 3 when it was a balmy 24 with a feels like temp of 18 deg. Started with the chenille cream grub microjig. Only one or two fish showed any interest. Then a 1/32 oz roostertail with prop blade. Had a couple tag the bait but not get hooked. I put on a meat jig (white and salmon marabou). Caught 5 in short order. Lost a few then they lost interest. Switched to John Deere microjig and only got a passing interest. Then put the white microjig that was successful and again nothing. Switched back to the meat jig and caught a couple more. There was a 16 inch brown trout that would chase the hooked fish. I switched to a silver PET 1/16 oz spoon. That got the brown's attention but only got really chased by rainbows. Ended up landing a 15 inch rainbow. Again switched to a 1/16 olive/ginger zig jig and caught a northern rock bass and a few rainbows. Finally ended the day on a rapala jerkbait. I caught a few rainbows between 12 to 15 inches and one over 15 inches. The brown chased it a couple of times then no interest. Ended up with 16 rainbows and the rock bass in 2 hours of fishing. By 5:20 pm there was only one other person fishing with me. No fish photos due to the cold. Wanted to get them back in the water as soon as possible.
  23. Congrats on surviving the opener and catching a bunch of fish. Seemed like some of the pointers helped. Great job on picking up the fly rod.
  24. Now you and Pat are internet stars. Just imagine how many men are watching that now think that they can go buy a trolling motor for their wife's birthday 😌. Can't wait to see Pat's present in action.
  25. also if you can't laugh at yourself life just isn't fun.
