Carved balsa poppers and more plus a bit of fishing
Johnsfolly replied to BilletHead's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
BH - Great to see you and Mrs. BH out on the water again. I love the baits. The color schemes are pretty cool! Great photos! -
Blues got to scoring last night. Looks good for going home to St Louis in game 5. They should have quieted some of their critics with ther performance

Bfishn - We were fishing off of the Rt T causeway/bridge on the east side of the lake. Only been up there a couple of times in the last 10 days. So I am not that familiar with the lake, but would assume that this would be the middle fork.

Got off early from work to go to the doctor for a three month follow-up check. I got the Penguins game scheduled on the DVR. Had the rods in the car and took by better half and my youngest daughter up to Thomas Hill to fish the causeway. Plenty of current was running under the bridge from the north. Hardly any wind, but the water was still fairly muddy. Got a small mixed bag of fish, hybrids, largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish, using a variety of jigs with and without floats. Still have fillets from my Sunday trip. All fish were released this evening. Everyone had a good time. Both the girls caught their first hybrid stripers off the bridge. Olivia's first - about 12". "Follysbetterhalf" with her first hybrid. No crappie for either girl. Fishing was slow from the bridge. Olivia really wanted a catfish and got her chance when she landed this channel catfish. I did catch the biggest crappie. Olivia quickly reminded me that I was the only one to catch crappie so it was no big deal that I caught the biggest one. She also did point out that she caught the first fish of the trip.

Last night's crappie really shows off the gray in my playoff beard. (had to bring some fishing into this thread) Getting ready to watch the blues game. Hope they get some offense this evening or else it will be a long way back from being down 2-1.

Flysmallie - due to the repugnant image that this picture brings to mind I cannot "like" your post. I did laugh, then cringe, and maybe threw up in my mouth a little . Thanks for that, maybe!

Marcus I feel your pain. Both series knotted at 1 a piece.

Down 2-0 after two. Blues have to get some scoring to get back into this game. Got to keep guys out of the penalty box. SJ looks good on their power play.

Since my last update I added the greenside darter, carmine or rosyface shiner, Ozark minnow, and on Sunday caught a sand shiner in Perche creek. As this photo shows the sand shiner is pretty nondescript silver minnow. I didn't find any johnny darters or logperch that are found in this creek.
-
Marcus That's easy for you to say. In hindsight I agree, but not at the time when I felt that they were giving away the game.

I have learned a lot by the posts on this site over the last couple of years and have fished in many of the waters covered by these forums. I would not have fished those had I not found this site. I also am fairly open about the fish that I catch, the areas that I catch them, and the techniques used to catch those fish. Maybe it is egotistic, but I hope that others can learn from my posts as well. At least a much as one would want to learn about minnows and darters. I do see a difference in providing specific information for species like crappie, white bass, bluegill, etc. that are found locally abundant at certain times of the year and are targeted for sport and food, than providing a specific location to catch individually large trophy fish like smallmouth, largemouth, trout etc. that are (hopefully) being released. I agree with folks like Mitch that certain bodies of water need more protection than others. Though I do believe that all waters can be overfished such that there are less fish or at least to the point where it affects our own time on the water while dealing with crowds. Each has to decide what information they are willing to divulge in their posts.

Wily - Great post! I have only heard about Dry Run recently. Sounds like a great experience for you and your kids. If hooking and even losing a huge brown trout doesn't get them motivated to keep fishing later in life, I don't know what would.

I have just begun to hear about honey powder, but have never used it. I would think that it would be a better finish than in a rub, since I believe that it's likely to easily burn. Love to hear more about it though.

WHEW! Crosby with the game winner in overtime. They got caught off guard at the end of the first, just looked like they were thinking about heading into the locker room with 2 minutes left. Power play still not looking really forceful. Are they too predictable? Pens looked slow in the third period, but picked it up at the beginning of OT. Glad that they got the win. Now a split or win two in TB would go a long way towards getting to the finals.

HOURLY Water Temperatures Now Available
Johnsfolly replied to Ben Gillispie's topic in Table Rock Lake
Ben - Pretty cool. Looking at you map I can now see the places that folks are posting about on TR. I do see an opening in your map right around Lilly's Landing. Maybe Phil would let you put in a sensor around their dock. -
Still reeling from that beat down on Friday. I hope the Pens can score early and often tonight and split at home. Don't want to see them 0-2 going down to Tampa.
-
Skeeter - Great post! Awesome to see his smile while holding a fish. They grow up way too fast and get pulled in many different directions. I hope that you have a fishing buddy for life right there.

5/15 Playing around up by Shorty's
Johnsfolly replied to Flatbottom Boy's topic in Lake of the Ozarks
Sounds like a great time with the family! -
I got out the causeway again this morning. I was on the west side of the bridge at 6:45 am. The sky was clear and it was cool with little wind. The water was still pretty muddied with less than 6-9" of visibility.I started with a 1/6 oz watermelon/chartreuse slider about 18" under a float fishing parallel and close to the bank. Nothing was touching that bait. I caught my first three crappie while fishing the same 1/8 oz jig pearl / chart.combo I used last Weds. The strikes were sporadic like the fish were moving in waves. Two guys fishing from the bridge since day break limited out and left. I got on the bridge and jigged around the bridge supports. I had a few strikes both at the end of my casts and right next to the bridge on the south side, but only landed a bluegill. The north side was a different story. I caught 8 fish on that side. As I was catching fish, I was thinking that I have five crappie, it would be nice to catch a sixth fish, or now I have nine total, I would love to catch that tenth fish. Once I landed the tenth fish, I thought I really should get on the road, but let's cast once more. I soon caught my eleventh crappie of the day. When I went for the even dozen, I hooked up on a rock and broke off. Someone was also telling me it was time to head home. Today's fish were shorter than those I caught on Weds. with a range of 9.5 to 11.5". Left at 9 am with fish still biting for some of the boats on the north side of the bridge. I doubt that I will make it back up to Thomas Hill before the crappie move deeper off the banks. I have it on mind for next season.

That's a great pair of hybrids. Must have been a great fight. They are such strong fish and absolutely don't want to be landed.
-
That should be enough to fish about a 1/3 mile of the creek. By that time I should have spooked at least a half dozen trout by breaking branches over their heads.
-
That was painful to watch. Lots if folks hurt on both sides. Now I am just hoping to split the first two games.
-
Snagged - thank you for the correct Elvis pronunciation. Thank you very much!
-
Sounds like I will have to triple the number of flies and jigs I bring with me the next time I get to fish this creek.

Great trip with your kids. Nice cooler full of crappie!
