  1. That is awesome. I have watched Doug and others fish with Kirk for those gar and have looked into a trip with him. Still haven't pulled the trigger. Congrats buddy on checking them off the list. Still on mine. Did you catch any other types of gar?
  2. I catch chain pickerel every time that I fish the 11 pt. Good fighters but tend to cut you off at least when they hit a jig.

    What's Cooking?

Last night was pan seared ribeye steak with montreal seasoning with sauted maitake mushrooms. The last of the sweet corn with salt&pepper and old bay (really like that combo lately). Salad with olive variety (Kalamata, Spanish green with pimentos, and chili spiced green olives), and the remainder of the heirloom tomato. Balsamic vinaigrette. No photos (spent nearly two hours cutting grass so too tiered to get the phone). So it must not have happened. The perfect diet dish - no calories !

    What's Cooking?

Wednesday night's dinner. No I did not catch or grow any of the items for this dish. Sliced garlic and cooked that in with the French style green beans (yes they are canned). Cooked the Mahi with just a bit of salt and pepper in a little olive oil. Once it was nearly done carmelized some teriyaki glaze on the fish.
  5. As I mentioned haven't caught a single 24" brown trout. I have caught 9 browns over 20". Nearly all of them on jerkbaits similar to what Gavin describes. However, I would say that at least five of those fish were caught between 10 am and 2 pm. I have always wondered if that if they were just more active at that time or if I just got to a hole or stretch of the river that most people don't get to and those fish were less disturbed.
  6. "Johnsfolly" - John is my first name and Folly represents those activities that I obsess about that have no or little practical importance other than to myself. Except fishing of course which is important to everyone ! avatar is a 17+" smallmouth caught in one of my favorite Ozark streams.
  7. With the triploids in Taney getting to the right age there seems to be more possibility of some large browns coming from that lake for years to come. I haven't caught either. @Ham has seen my PB smallie and it was not 20". Closest I have come was 23.75" on a brown trout. Just couldn't stretch it to 24"

    What's Cooking?

I mix ricotta, sweet dried basil, dried oregano, and mozzarella into my lasagna mixtures. In Ireland they top lasagna with a bechamel sauce. I definitely do not like that.

    What's Cooking?

I can tell the difference when my wife uses cottage cheese instead of ricotta. I prefer the ricotta even with the greater expense.
  10. Looks great to me especially the parr marks! I'd eat that !

    What's Cooking?

Just a little salt and pepper on that cottage cheese/tomato would made this a perfect meal😁! Congrats to your wife!
  12. Maybe he was a British loyalist that when they ".. Fired their guns the British kept a running all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico!"
  13. I wonder if the pickerel migrate upstream towards the spring in the winter and may be more populated further downstream in the summer. Those fish are some of the most spooky fish I have ever encountered. I don't know if you read my post where I was using a portable turkey blind. I would set up and let the fish calm down for up to ten min before i would make a cast. I caught fish!
  14. Looks a lot like my brown trout tackle box . I'm having a hard time finding the original F9 and F11 floating Rapalas. I really like the wood more so than plastics with rattles. Also like to touch them up a bit.

Just hope that this doesn't start a "blue pill" conversation .
  18. That's a beast of a smallie! Congrats to your Dad!
  19. Thanks for posting this! Love seeing kids fishing. Hopefully she stills loves to get out with her granddad and hit the ponds and creeks!
  20. Glad to help with your color selection. Looks like you had a great time! Congrats! Let me know if you ever decide to sell some of your jigs. I'll even pay postage 😁(inside joke for some other OAF Folks).
  21. Don't think that he would mind going that way. Of course he has been pretty safe since we haven't seen many reports of him catching a sucker or two below that riffle ar Barclay😌!
  22. My wife and I have discussed participation in this event ever since the first one. Never did put it together. Would be a scary and fun at least for the first 40 miles or so then a grind for the next 300!

    What's Cooking?

It was a busy day at our house as well. I wanted a ham, bacon and cheese sandwich. So I went out and butchered the pig this morning, went ahead and begun the cure on the ham and got the pork belly smoked with Applewood smoke. As the ham was curing, I went ahead and grew the wheat and milled it for the bread. I had an old Italian bread recipe from Maiers. Once the bread was in the oven, the tomatoes were just about ripened. I picked one of the ripe ones and sliced it. I sliced the bacon and ham and cooked them both. Just as the meat was cooking, the Colby jack cheese was getting done. I took a couple of slices for the sandwich. A quick mayonnaise was prepped. Toasted the bread, added the mayo, laid on the tomatoes, Salt AND pepper on the tomatoes, then the cooked bacon, Colby jack cheese, and topped with the cooked ham. Not a bad day of work ! Or I just bought the stuff and made a sandwich!
  24. Sure looks like creek chubs to me as well.
  25. Ham that is a great brown trout! Congrats on a great day!
