@dpitt is a good dude and great fly fisherman. You all better be nice to him for using the whippy stick. Sad I will be missing it -
You know, you are right. I'm no narc but those are the type of people who ruin public land duck hunting for everybody. Maybe now they'll think before doing what they did. Or just stay away. There are TONS of guys who go about it the right way, don't get me wrong. And those of us who despise the type of guys I ran into want them to go away. I get it, it's public land, but it's not too much to just be a decent person. Some good examples. When I was in Iowa this year, I was dressing at the lot and met Frank, a professor. Pro tip: you will know within 30 sec of meeting somebody at a lot if they are good people. I knew Frank was. He said "well hell, we might as well hunt together instead of competing." I agreed. I had a blast. We shot ducks and laughed all morning. I have his number now and invited him to come to Missouri or Kansas should he want to. Teal season in Kansas met Trevor and his son Malcolm. Asked where they were going and he said well I don't know, haven't been able to scout. I had. It was his son's first duck hunt. I said well if you want to hunt together, come with me and let's get him his first duck. We have been friends ever since. Had my buddy Chris make him some calls that I am delivering on our next hunt together. Two years ago I was in between jobs so I could hunt whenever. Got out to the marsh at 8:30. Two guys in the spot I wanted to be. I watched them shoot their limits from the lot and as they came back helped them lug their gear and full straps back to the trucks. "Wow, thanks so much for not walking in on us and setting up close. That's rare these days." They left and I went in and shot a limit, too. It's more good than bad, but the bad ones certainly stand out.

Ahh, danger ducks. About time to amend that one-bird limit I'd say.

Did my first Kansas hunt since teal yesterday. Did not shoot a duck. Saw a few, but nothing in range. However, it was eventful. I deer hunted KS in the morning so I got to the public marsh around 9:30. Was prepared to wait if the lot was full. Not a vehicle, which is usually a bad sign. I hauled my Invisiman, Hank's Invisilab, decoys and gun to a good spot on the south end with the south wind. Jumped up 20 or so mallards walking in. About 2:30 these two younger cats come walking down the levee. Mind you, this is a very small marsh. It can hunt one party on a south wind, two on a north. They get to within 150 yds of me on the levee and finally see me (was happy with my hide). Well they decide to keep going and setup within 120-yds of me. Strike one. Then they start talking loud. I mean I could hear every word loud. Then came to cacophony of their attempts at duck calling. I mean it might be the worst I've ever heard. Whatever, no ducks were flying over anyway. Finally a group of gadwall and mallards circle and they just blow them out with their first note. I said calmly "guys, I can call and I'll let them pick where they go." No answer. So the entire rest of the day they blow their calls and essentially ruined my hunt. They were ignorant, loud, and horrible hunters. So shooting light end comes near and I know I wasn't going to shoot anything so I pick up my decoys and gather all my things and haul them in two trips to the levee. They yell at me to quit moving. I ignore them. It's now 10 min after shooting light and I watch a drake mallard circling. I knew they were going to do it, and they did. Of course they shot at him at 70 yds and he flew away. I said "hey you know you're supposed to stop shooting at sunset, right?" Their reply was "f**k off, go away you p***k!" Ok, now I'm going to get petty. You ruined my hunt for 4 hours, so I am going to ruin yours. I hustle back to the lot and get their plate info and call my buddy Tanner, who just so happens to be the game warden. "Shoot, I'm 5-min down the road, I'll head there now." He waited for them at the lot. Tickets for shooting after legal hours, tickets for no hunting licenses, and tickets for no federal duck stamp. I am no narc, but these guys were the absolute worst and they deserved it. I was going to let everything go and just chalk it up to younger guys not knowing any better and maybe have a parking lot conversation, but nope, they had to mouth off after ruining my day. Petty? Yes. But hopefully they never set foot on that area again, because those types of people are the one's ruining public land duck hunting for everybody. Lesson: be careful who you mouth off to in the marsh when you've been an a-hole all day. Anyway, this front should make things fun!

Couple of items I made for deer camp. Duck gravy (Woodies and GWT) was superb with cheddar biscuits. Also made another loaf of meat from deer and pork. Added cheese this time. Fantastic!
-
Well now I can focus on the fowl. I have been shooting them on the lake on the property. After I shot this guy, I watched 15 mallards light into the lake. It was like a flip switched. Heard a ton of specks again, too.

A cautionary tale. Warning (very graphic photo)

Tis but a flesh wound! Gnarly. Glad it's healing. Here's a good one. Shooting a scoped pistol..screw was sticking out too far and I held it like a moron. Recoil got me. Finger was broken and the ER doctor at Golden Valley in Clinton used the wrong stitches and didn't put vaseline down before be wrapped it. Gauze was glued to the wound. I was living in St. Louis at the time for a year for work. When I got back that Monday I saw the hand surgeon. "Well, this is going to really hurt." I don't think I've yelled that loud ever from pain. When I walked out into the lobby the patients waiting had a horrified look on their faces. Took a while to heal and I have a nasty scar from the ER doc messing it up. But, my fault. -

Those poor young men are going to be scarred... -
Place I deer hunt in Gasconade county had about 300 birds on it yesterday. Naturally middle is closed, but I was very surprised. I've been hunting that place since 2001 and all I've ever seen there is hooded darts and a few woodies. There were GWT, mallards, woodies, gadwall, bologna snatchers and ring-necks all over it. I shot some woodies there opening day, but may have to try and do some actual hunting there. Heard a bunch of specks, too. More and more evidence the flyway has shifted, IMO.
-
Drahts are flat out savages. They're like the Hans Landa of dogs. Great dogs, but man they'll do some stuff.
-
Nice, Marty and Pat! Awesome job. I shot a limit of woodies in about 7 minutes. I saw about 100. I plucked them whole and will be doing sauce picante or a gravy like I did with teal. Best time of year is here!

I was busy deer hunting, but a few buddies hunted the Kansas opener and have been the last two days. Teal (GWT and BWT), teal, and more teal. And a few pintails. Hot, low water, and not much of a migration yet over on the West side is not great. I haven't gone yet with the weather/duck numbers, but I am on a 6 day vacation starting tomorrow. Will be deer hunting and duck hunting every day--and cooking. Excited for the cold front tomorrow night. Tons of wood ducks on the big lake where I deer hunt in Gasconade County. I do believe I am going to go after them on Saturday morning. Last year a big wad of mallards, gadwall and wigeon found the lake right before the opener but didn't stay. Maybe this year it'll line up right! Either way, I am excited for the next week or so! I'll be interested to see how Saturday goes for North/Mid opener..

I think the meatloaf sandwich is the best part of the entire situation, but that's just me. I need to make more loaved meats. It really hit the spot.
-
Did a smoked deer and goose meatloaf the other night. It was fantastic. Made a sandwich for lunch every day this week. Sourdough, mayo, hot sauce, roasted red peppers, and smoked gouda. I will be doing this again. Before: After:

Well Iowa was decent, but not great, even with the cold front. Shot BWT, pintail and a gadwall. LOTS of pintails. Saw multiple groups of 15-20 both days. Teal seemed to have booked it with the front Monday evening. Saw only one group of mallards both days. They worked, but I was waiting for a feet down shot and they never did. It was nice to have temps in the 30s in the mornings and no mosquitoes. I bet this morning was good. I will likely go up there once more in November. Felt good to get some big ducks down. I plucked them and will be making the Cajun gravy I did with the teal with them.
-
I wasn't going to, but with a 35 degree temp drop I took off work and am headed to Iowa Monday/Tuesday. After I shoot a doe or two this weekend in Missouri I am loading up and headed that way. Anybody is welcome to join me.

How's the water looking? Got a thousand woodies in there? We are planning blitzkrieg on wood ducks for big duck opener. I guess they had a phenomenal hatch, because we saw more woodies during teal than I think we ever have. I am talking hundreds every morning at every spot. So, on 10/26 and 11/2 we are going to make them pay.

Posted on the duck hunting thread, but forgot to post here. Shot five teal closing day of KS and made a teal gravy with them. Served over rice for a side one night and cheesy grits the other times. It was delicious. I will be doing it again with big ducks. I need a Magnalite I suppose..sigh..

Had a good end to teal season. It was odd across the board, but we still scratched some out. Kansas had an extra week this year so we took advantage. Yesterday was fun. Shot 8 between us, but every bird we crumpled. I love when the shooting is good. Last week we saw a lot more green wings, and shot quite a bit. Took the five from yesterday and made a teal gravy. It was one of the best dishes I've made from ducks, and that is saying something. Think I will try to shoot some geese next weekend and head up to Iowa for the South Zone opener in a couple weeks. Best time of year rolls on!

Finally got some new birds and a cold front Saturday over in KS. I saw big groups of teal Saturday morning flying around aimlessly looking for habitat, and so did my buddies hunting MO. We all shot quite a few, so it was a good weekend! Finally feel like I'm in the slot with my shooting, setup, routine, etc. I pulled up to the lot yesterday morning and got out to ask where the other guys were going since they were there first. We got to chatting and it was a dad and his young son, trying to get his first teal ever. Dad ended up telling me to just hunt with them, so I did. Which to be honest, was exciting. Malcolm, the son, was amped up and ready to get his first duck. We had a wood duck light in right at first light and had to restrain the young man. Then four teal came crashing in. He stood up and knocked one down and I shot one trying to get out. He ran out to the hole and was about as happy as I've seen a kid in a long time. I was happy, too. He did not want to leave either. He kept begging his dad to let them stay. I remember those days! North wind came hitting so I ended up just hunting all day, with a nap in there. About 3:00 pm had a flock of 25-30 light in and finished the day. The rollercoaster that is waterfowl hunting! Should be a good last week in Kansas..

Well, not much to discuss from the weekend. We ate good, though! Pheasant and dumplings Friday night, fried hybrids, white bass, duck, and Texas shrimp Saturday night. Most of Missouri seems to be void of teal. We shot six all weekend. Water looked good in most places but the ones we had opening week sure seem to be drinking a pina colada on the Mexico coast right about now. Buddies up in MN, IA, and NoDak say there are a lot still around, which isn't surprising. Went to KS this morning and just about the same, although I did see some big groups flying. I just wasn't where they wanted to be. Need some rain and a North wind! We did have a nice reward on Sunday at least.
