Huntest joined me this morning at 6:00 and for a very long time I was afraid having a guest would be the kiss of death. We caught bluegill. We caught bass. No walleye. Not even at the Rock Creek location. Finally around 10, at the third location, I caught a keeper. That was it for that location. The last stop, up river of Holiday Island, gave up two keepers and two shorts. I might note that both Dave and I were experiencing long distance releases today. Had we landed all the good fish we had on, we would have had twice as many keeps. Depth was 24 to 28 feet. Nightcrawlers on bright harnesses behind 1 ounce bottom bouncers at 1.2 mph. Fish were on breaks or in cover near the channel edge.

That is the way it is supposed to be.

The reason I like to see the patrol boats (has anyone else seen the twin engine cruiser the Mo. guys pilot on TR?) is that they act just like the cruisers parked in obvious locations along the highway. People slow down and stop acting stupid. Water gnats and blaring wake boats go away.

QB: the twin spin has other excellent applications. If you need to fish flooded brush, it hangs less than a single spin. Slow roll it through bluff end timber when the fish have suspended off the bottom. In Spring time cold water, throw it parallel to the bank and slither it across the bottom. (Slither is a technical term) When the fish want you to bring a bait over trash and kill the bait, the twin spinners keep the bait level as it falls and ups your hook up percentage.

Chuck, my HI guru who passed away last summer, often fished above Beavertown all year long. I have caught fish up there as late as July.

I fished 6:30 to noon today. I had my top water rod on my deck in case, but I never needed it. To begin, I tried two new locations between Holiday Island and Eagle Rock. Both are within sight of areas that have given up walleye year after year. No joy. I motored down to the Eagle Rock area and caught six walleye on a channel edge fishing 26 to 30 feet of water right next to water 50+ feet deep. While catching the walleye I caught 10 to 12 bass, two of which would have counted as keepers. Two of the walleye were keepers, 22 and 18.5 inches. As a heads up for the serious bass fishermen, when I came in I found a wolf pack of a dozen bass cruising under the dock slips

Texoma, the major lake on the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma, is older than TR. It has undergone a change over the years. Largemouth when it was young, a gizzillion white bass and then stripers. Now days its premier bass is small mouth.

We have a house guest and she brought the fish as a gift. I loved this dish even though it was a first time for me. It would be fantastic with walleye or striper chunks.

Bill, your experience is no different than mine. Walleye are as difficult. The weather + water + temp has sucker punched us all. Next year will be different. In the mean time, we do the best we can. Fortunately, I have no clients to please. For that I am very grateful.

I did not go out today. Chores and such. I plan on going out tomorrow, but sure sounds like I better put my game face on.

Storm makes a variety of lures that work very well for multiple species - and all of them are reasonably priced and often on sale. I heartily recommend the original series wiggle wart, the hot-n-tot, and the thundercrank.

Vertical spoon jigging is my favorite.

Dice a medium red onion or yellow onion. Rinse the dice thoroughly in cool water. That removes the burp and heartburn. Depending on the size of peaches dice 3 to 5 peaches. Seed and dice 2 or 3 roma tomatoes. Seed, pith, and fine dice a serrano pepper. Mince a small handful of cilantro or basil. Juice a small lemon. Combine the above and taste. Add salt to desired level, and sugar if needed. If you want more heat I suggest Franks Hot Sauce or srirachi. BTW, mango works equally well, as does strawberry on its own or combined with either of the other two.
