Interesting comments about the sludge factor. Before I moved to Table Rock, I mostly fished Oklahoma lakes. Many of them are exactly as you describe. And the older they are the higher the sediment level.
Other lakes are not as quick to silt in. On much of Tenkiller, Bull Shoals, and even TR you can still feel pebbles when you drag a bottom bait even out to 40 feet.
BTW, the original post asked about confusing terms. One used frequently on this board is "roll off." A roll off is where a flat ( usually a wide flat point) suddenly rolls into deeper water. Often, not always, the flat will actually rise a bit before it drops. During the summer, after the topwater bite ends, that is where I spent the majority of my time, other than treed channel swings.
Bo's reports are night fishing based (I often wonder when he sleeps). He throws bottom baits. He even fishes his spinner baits like a jig. His method would not be so successful on a sludge covered flat.
