  1. Raising Your own Maggots for Bait, Great for Trout Begin with just a few supplies. You will need: Bait container: 1 large plastic container with a lid. Uncooked, Canteloupe to bait the flies. or fish heads..you can add food color to the bait to make colored larva Holding container for mature maggots: 1 small plastic container with a lid. Corn meal for the holding container. Using canteloupe, put a few slivers into the bait container Put the container in a warm spot outside. Leave it out for a day or 2. Female flies will land on the food and lay their eggs. Cover the container and bring it in at night. Cats, dogs and racoons may thieve your smelly bait if you don't. On day 3 put your covered bait container in a safe, shady spot outside where animals can't bother it. Wait and watch for the maggots to hatch. When the maggots have hatched you can let them feed for a couple of days or you can put them into the small holding container with a few teaspoons of corn meal. Refrigerating the maggots will keep them in a temporary state of stupor until you're ready to use them. To feed fly pupa, put the maggots in the small container with corn meal once they have stopped feeding. Do not refrigerate. Put the container in dark place. The maggots will burrow in the cornmeal and become pupa in a few days. Refrigerate after they have reached the pupa stage. If the pupa are not refrigerated, they will hatch into flies. To farm a revolving supply of maggots: As the maggots hatch, remove them to the holding container. Add canteloupe to the bait container as needed and start from the beginning again. Be aware that maggots are excellent climbers. Do not leave the bait or holding containers uncovered. The maggots will escape or get eaten by predators. If you've never handled maggots before, now is as good a time to start as any. Good luck!
  2. thats a very old pic in my 1st house....retro fo sho...no more paneling.....but they are my fish, just don't mount them anymore, wanna see someone crap? turn loose a 17 pound walleye in front of them, I even turned loose a 2 pound bluegill in front of a buddy at a pit in KS once, he was like "man I would have mounted it" I found you get more bigs using stealth......
  3. LOL sounds like a plan!!!
  4. BIG fish don't get big by being stupid, those get harvested FAST.....never heard of a 12 pound eye or 5lbs smallie get landed during a blitzkrieg of PWC or off the back of a party pontoon shooting off bottle rockets....
  5. dam son, gotts be careful, "you could try to net a fish at the pothole ane fall and get scraped up" Glad you didn't get hurt
  6. Times ARE changing thats why new laws get enacted, new presidents get elected..... I was young once, never did the drunk lake thing, was married, bought my 1st new boat, truck and house before I was 21 years old ,...all on our own, no help from our parents or Grand parents, all while working at a factory job making a smidge over minimum wage.... it why America got pissed last election and shook things up....guess what its fixing to happen again on lots of things.. wanna know why radical tree huggers started out west? go to lake Lake Havasu, or go scout you favorite deer woods to see 500 acres of timber was clearcut while the owner was in the hospital....or in our selfie-focused culture one persons making a living impacts your life to the degree its a problem. When Monroe and Henley snowflake or X gen sold our jobs over seas, or employed the cheapest workers who could be snuck into the Country,,,,,,, things have reached a tipping point "they" don't give a rats arse on anything or anyone but themselves people like me are getting "Trumped off" at the way things are going..... the MDC has outreach programs for kids and the outdoors why?, because less people take there kids hunting and fishing. People are mad as hell and are not going to take it anymore! I an half tempted to get 50 people together use 50 pontoon boats rigged with the loudest, window busting bass thumping speakers and blast it at 5000 db at daylight the morning after in mutton, just to rattle the hang overs.....bet new laws woulds happen then....call it a fishermans protest... hell a wake fest on LOZ!... after all the cruiser crowd are moored up for the night, be worth the fine to get a 50 footer doing donuts bouncing this bastids for a change! I don't want to see syndicate/club fishing like it is in europe it cost £1000 or about $1300 to fish what is basically farm ponds...... ok ill jump off the soap box for someone else https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG3i4EOXkj0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ4bUmJjFDw&t=66s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QZpFlD3HY4
  7. back in the day that was the go to trolling bait
  8. Stockton was created with a more "natural" goal fishing/camping experience, hence the limited docks/concession that have been allowed on the lake....in the early years it was to mimic a "wilderness Canadian lake" managed with pike/tiger muskies and Walleyes...... the marina only has the rights to do what is allowed, I will say enough people are not happy with the types of crowds this has brought to the Mutton area, noise, fights, trash, public drunkiness are all up......Mutton has new owners that are trying the LOZ formula to earn quick $ People have historically gone to Stockton for camping and fishing for the most part, the lake being windy and rough often has kept the massive amounts of ski/PWC numbers lower than TR... LOZ etc....this bar on the lake IMHO doesn't fit..and I can tell you complaints are happening because its causing the people who USED to go to Stockton to spend their $ elsewhere.....once that effects peoples wallets who cater to the traditional visitors to the lake then rules change......
  9. usually the walleye but there is earlier in the spring, now is catfish time
  10. BS....... I have fished for years on that lake, sometimes dropping a split-shot on a carpeted boat floor shuts them down, the music/people noise and crowd trash sure doesn't help.............I know families who USED to stay at Mutton, but don't want to expose their kids to the "party" crowd.....keep waiting for they big blow to toss 8 foot waves during a concert.....
  11. its all in the water release at stockton
  12. off in the distance.... at night miles across the lake.... you hear loud music and a Party Im like WHISKY TANGO FOXTROT! looks like Mutton's Cafe Is a Noisy bar on the lake! We lose a heated dock for winter fishing and the quiet of the night is split open I am surprised this is allowed on Stockton,
  13. get some inline mepps angla spinners size 5...... trade out a big musky style dressed treble..... the just unscrew the hook off......it just floats through weeds and you can keep it spinning slow.... pike will slam it , get some wire leaders... finer the better..and 1/8 tp 1/4 oz jigs plastics for smallies and walleyes....the full size heddon torpedo in any minnow color is slamming for smallmouth
  14. its not bad..now blue crabs are a different thing
  15. Crayfish do inter-breed, making some ID problematic, only way to know for sure is DNA profiling....unsure if that has ever been done for Missouri Crayfish...., usually Taxon methodology, I bet a PHD could be had with DNA studies with Ozark crayfishes, if you REALLY want to find them you'll have to go out at night, you'll find 1000 fold more that way.....in the upper center creek drainage there is a tiny 1" size very heavy shell with thick stubby claws not quite unlike the The Neosho midget crayfish....they are usually very darkly colored and worthless as bait, seems you only find them in very cold almost trout habitat,.......... I have caught stream bred trout in Jones and Jenkins creek rare but they are there perhaps one day the MDC will acquire this watershed before the land gets as developed...in my youth I mink trapped the area, never froze over much due to all the springs, a few smallies, but too cold for the most part...interesting stream very hard to get access these days all the new bridges are not fisherman friendly in my part especially for this old man
  16. Yeah rough flood water kills fish, a ride through the turbines do that.....all that extra fertility washing in can cause bacteria to spike
  17. I used fly hooks 12-18, but its what I had...on 1x test tippet, for bait good old chewed up white bread, my brother and I got into it as kids catching bait when we lived on Shoal Creak crush up some crackers chum them up, as we caught shiners for the bait bucket we would catch something weird, toss it back....then we would try to catch those odd ball fish, even get an ID book to figure out what we caught, we tried different baits, homemade dough bait peanut butter and flour, worked better than bread for chubs prob because in sank deeper IDK sometimes a stray rainbow would show up, a few hang out in Shoal Creek down stream from Grand Falls, there are Topeka shiners about... if you catch one report it..not many of those around anymore
  18. it can be interesting micro fishing... larger ripple habitats are really good places to do that, Ozark streams have diverse minnow species "well the heathy ones do"
  19. RUN MAN RUUUUUUUUUUUUUN
  20. well now.... you are a brave person
  21. as far as cleaning, in the salt water areas they have had to contend with barnacles, same issue different critter, as far as nutrients, source point pollution human waste from septic tanks and waste water treatment plants, livestock operations and run-off from cities makes our water sheds speeds eutrophication, providing food for plankton that feeds the filter feeders be it shad, spoonbill or Zebra mussels..I think I read somewhere walleyes are using zebra shell beds as spawning substrate clear and have better fry survivability...niches that are empty get filled...
  22. yes read that....from my research diving ducks eat them too , as far as fishing, the great lakes improved from what I have read....not that we need them, but I bet if grand gets many it will get much clearer
  23. I say I win the lottery and buy this for LOZ complete with Torpedo Prop tanglers to disable a running cruiser by dragging rope infront of said offending craft, I'd paint it black and fly a interesting politically incorrect flag!
