  1. so outboards provide more thrust when the entire shaft is buried? and the cav plate should be as deep as possible. stupid internet has me all f-d up. (please do not respond)
  2. thanks buddy... I had no idea kayaks were supposed to be light and slice through the water... or there was a weight rating. seriously? it should still float no matter what as long as the hatch is closed. barge wakes look scary and i will avoid them at all cost..lower missouri doesn't get many barges though. and yes it is big boat/motor territory but every year hundreds of people yak nonstop form KC to STL ... going the other direction with gear requires a motor IMO unless your stupid... I just wanted to know weather bringing the prop up 5-6 inches was going to get me some extra mph and from a few google searches I believe it will. ps I haven't added even 30lbs with riggers and motor mount... i guarantee you its the prop depth not the load of the motor mount/riggers but whatever... riggers aint comming off. will try motor at new heigh
  3. lol.. I wish. missouri river current is strong ! I MAY have done it unassisted before...which is why I don't wanna do it again... the battery goes in the front compartment, for actually getting upriver I've decided against using the battery and trolling motor...though they may actually help, the compartment needs to be open and all in all that makes me nervous for the time being, untill i get everything sorted and comfortable i feel better without the load and open hatch.
  4. in 4-5 hours it wrapped around the braid/mono leader knot 4-5 times... if the leader was longer, it probably wouldnt hang up there.. it was never a knot just a wrap and was easy to deal with....
  5. cuz you don't see the outriggers I assume .. fyi it has never been "dumped" or "rolled" ever. I did fall out one day while battling a fish and trying to opperate the trolling motor at the same time
  6. here's another idea for a deep dead drift or deep current swinger... i think this will work too. day or night as well. proofs in the puddin... and its never a bad idea to use a weedless hook either
  7. took it out after dark I did manage a medium/small channel cat blind...felt the take nice and solid. had another nibble while watching bobber...didn't see it flinch but felt the fish.. no worm on reel up so chances are it was another fish. ...seems like the creek slows down at night...almost like the fish are sight feeding by day? anyhow... all in all the bait ends up moving if you want to stay in contact with it but its my impression hook ups are more solid/direct and detectable. I will have to fish it by day and see how it all works out.
  8. so ive been fly only for 25 years and somehow i ended up with a spinning rod and now its gone "full bait"... never go full bait! anyhow, i hit the creek the other day with a cork bobber and some worms and it was non stop action. Went back at night with some home-made glow in the dark bobbers and they just didn't quite cut it... the easiest way to detect a strike was to reel slowly and feel it that way, but you don't get the 2-3min marinade time you might wan't out in the honey hole. which got me thinking ... why not have the bobber and the hook trade places? this eliminates the slack "L" in the line and should be just as good at strike detection as most bottom rigs. Therefore you don't need to SEE your bobber and you can fish suspended baits at night... am i missing something? anyone seen this done... a quick google search turned up nothing.. another claim to fame?
  9. I think this does it.... testing will tell. pretty simple adjustment before i buy the jon/cannoe since i have the yak and it does me well. and I was barking up the wrong tree with trimming up/back. all those settings seem to be for bridging from the 15deg transom to approx 0 in my case i can only go from 0 to 25deg in the other direction ie shallow water drive style/ rooster tail...someday i will see what it does not today. Obviously me and the cat are tight....
  10. this is the current setup... (motor is pulled up in photo) underway i have about 2inches of freeboard putting waterline just under the 2x6 motor mount and just under the metal brackets you see on the yak, not much! Currently i have lots of shaft under water and a 0deg on the "transom"/motor mount. I tried to take er 1 mile up the Missouri river yesterday and just couldn't quite beat the current short of massive physical exertion with paddle assist, so i called it quits. I think the motor/prop/ cav plate should come way up 5-7inches..prop should probably be mid yak looking from the side or just under the waterliine basically... yeah? so i need to bring er up ? after that im thinking about trimming up/back to get the traditional 12-15deg transom angle one would normaly find on a jon boat..after that rich lean highspeed settings. Am I barking up the right trees? Thanks
  11. trolling motor right, johnson left... sturdy as can be with the 2" inch pvc outrigger upgrade. the motor's not on the pvc.. I wasn't sure how this was gunna get rigged up but I surprised myself in the end and she's Rock solid and cat approved! My last question would be weather or not to remove the bolt latch that keeps the motor from popping up in reverse.. its 1968 forward only with 180 swivel for reverse and since i shouldn't be reversing with power...it might be for the best to remove it in case of hitting subered logs etc... so i don't jack up the rig/myself with a sudden 10mp -> 0 probably safer IMO.? open to thoughts . darn thats a nice rig.... lol
  12. Thanks guys... I love the response! yeah i could probably get away with it.....I have really good luck when it comes to avoiding law enforcement! I mean really good luck. (its probably shot since i just gloated about it) ... maybe i will just go with it..
  13. Im trying to figure out how to get an outboard on my 12'6" kayak. I've owned and used the kayak, without registration, for 7years or so, and have no way to prove ownership....and have never seen a boat identification #. the # may be under layers of paint.... how will i go about registering this yak? (pretend to have purchased from buddy who writes up bill of sale?) assuming its possible..... The second issue I am having is the purchase of the outboard... I assume the best case scenario is that the seller has the motor title and registration up to date... but if that's not the case what do i need to do to cover my backside and make sure i can get the motor titled and registered. I don't want to go buy a motor and then not be able to get legal.. also the yak is 12'6" and i wanna put a 4 hp on it... any problems there? I assume the yak could be register for use with a trolling motor and that the yak and motor registration are on separate paper work...therefore i could theoretically register the boat as trolling motor vessel and just register the motor seperate? thoughts. ... Thanks
  14. That settles it...its a hybrid Bass. I had a feeling.. Thanks for the help and letting me show off my best ever hybrid bass.
  15. but distinctly different i think....as the banding is not nearly as solid and the fish is very slender and tubelike... wereas my boy looks big in the shoulder... I still say hybrid
