  1. You are not planning on restoring the waterworks portion of the mill are you? That would be a major chore.
  2. So you really believe that insurances companies would require you to break the law by killing the snakes? They really can't hold you accountable for acts of nature. Don't get me wrong. I also feel a snake in its place in the wild not disturbing me has the right to go his merry way. But a snake in my space is a threat to my family that has to be dealt with. An attempt to relocate a poison snake would just increase my odds of getting bit, so it gets dealt the other penalty. You do have a right in this state to protect yourself, your family, and your livestock from all threats.
  3. Not something you see every day. Poor little jon boat.
  4. Either that or you are about to die and go to heaven
  5. Shot the dung out of it, good one..... It must be Black Rat mating season, I have seen a crapload of them on the road this week. Probably 10 a day out running my routes.
  6. Sounds like a good idea, wish I lived a little closer to help. How far gone is the mill now? I have not been to it since the late 80's.
  7. The Pilot House is off Rt W north of Cape Girardeau by the Jaycee Golf Course. It is a local little bar and grill with some daily specials. Most are cooked in a little kitchen the size of my master bath. Beware, it is a Conservative hangout, an autographed pic of Rush Limbaugh graces the walls behind the bar of glued on pennies. Bluegill fishing petered out this weekend. Went out Sat and only picked up 5. Have to wait till next full moon.
  8. They water down the low grade with ethanol so it goes farther. That is why there is more of it. And why it costs more.
  9. Holy crap, I have not fished twin spins for years. Come to think of it they were pretty deadly, but they just moved to the back of the tackle box somewhere. I have some twin spin spinners that you simply attach the jig to and some bucktail ones that were molded with the twin spinners. I have a jig and tools somewhere with all the fixins. There was a time I made rooster tails and panther martins. It was how I actually started fly tying, making the skirted trebles for them. One thing led to another and the original use went to the back burner. I have not made a spinner in 20 years.
  10. Buy some land and build a house near a lake. Then build a dam and make your own private lake. Chances are, for what you spend on lakefront property, you can build somewhere more private and enjoy life better. Hook up the boat and drive it to the bigger lakes just minutes away or more. Or step out and fish your own privately managed honey hole.
  11. Define "wakebait"? I typically fish the floating rapalas when fish are hitting topwater in this way. I cast and let it settle till the ripples move away, then jerk in small jerking motions. That creates a wake. The jointed one are a little more deadly as the back end droops down and creates a little more enticement. I do this about halfway to the boat then start cranking it in. I do this with the J7 on creeks an the J13 on rivers and lakes. During the spring, I tend to cast them and reel them in as a subsurface bait as fish are usually striking subsurface.
  12. Looks like a water snake to me. Some of those guys can be cheeky fellows. Too much barring to be a cottonmouth.
  13. Nothing beats Pilot House BBQ. I need to eat some of that tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder.
  14. That really did the trick. Motor will pull the boat up on plane now. No jerky motion. Foot pedal is centered and you don't have to fight it. Works great now.
  15. Been taking the boat out quite a bit here lately. I put in to Lake Girardeau about 10 today and headed to my honey hole. Everytime the clouds broke and gave me some sun, the bite was on. 2 nice redear and 15 big ole male bluegills today. Memorial day we pulled 30 out between the 2 of us. Sunday before I boated 18 of the pigs. Boat is finally lined out and ready to go.
  16. Here are some more places on the net to read. http://www.missourigeologists.org/FieldtripsandGuidebooks.htm http://www.dnr.mo.gov/magazine/index.html http://www.dnr.mo.gov/geology/geocolumn.htm http://www.dnr.mo.gov/geology/adm/publications/gen_info.htm http://quarriesandbeyond.org/states/mo/missouri.html http://www.geology.ar.gov/home/index.htm
  17. Get the one with the scale built in and kill 2 birds with one stone.
  18. We were always taught to unload the gun before coming into the house. By unload, we simply remove the chambered round and stored it in the house. Magazines were still full and all that was required to load was to cycle the action. Safe guns are fully unloaded and wiped down or cleaned before putting under lock and key. Transported guns are also unloaded or magazines stored separate with the exception of the daily carry. The only fully loaded and chambered weapon is the daily carry. It is a double action first shot, semi auto with a thumb safety Smith 6906. It requires a pretty strong trigger pull and rests in a holster at my side. No catlike reflexes needed to control it. Like others, children are taught that all guns are loaded and to treat them with respect. None are laying around in corners or behind doors. None are under a bed or a pillow. I intentionally locate the night defense gun away from the bed so it will require a conscience effort to get it and avoid any dreams or accidents. All others are in multiple safes under lock and key. A few are in wall racks, out of reach of young children.
  19. Looks like a Kentucky Bass. Hard to tell from the photo, but the tooth patch gives it away.
  20. They are money well spent. I fish 3 Hook Rapalas alot, and they tend to get one stuck further back. Holding them at arms length and removing hooks with pliers gives you a great advantage. And it is easier on the fish as well. Anything to lessen the time you spend unhooking them greatly improves their survival.
  21. In the words of Ron White you can find much wisdom. "You Can't Fix Stupid".
  22. Yep. Quail and rabbit too.
  23. Missouri Landscapes, a Travel Thru Time. Geologic Wonders and Curiousities of Mo. Springs of MO. Fossils of Mo. University of MO, Rolla has many publications. The Missouri Miner was a monthly I used to get. Missouri Natural Resource Magazine published quarterly. The Geologic Column that was ended about 2008, still some archives.
  24. I like the stick steer. My buddy has a Panfish 16 with a 25 jet on it that we have fished out of for years. He decked out the boat with diamond tread aluminum and had the transom built up for the jet. It is great until you hit a rock and the thin hull gives way. The stick steer works great, especially if you fish alone. You are up front and can see what is coming. Your weight in the boat helps to trim it out some. The layout lets you walk around and is very stable in the water.
  25. Dam Ness, you may as well wait for the Poleece to show up. Loaded weapon within reach at all times and under my control. Several others mag loaded with empty chambers at main entry points and bedroom. All out of reach of young children. Older children know how to respect and use firearms. Younger ones realize that they are danger and off limits. I do have a very limited household, just the two of us with a 4 year old a few times a week. Different situations require different plans. When in doubt, lock it up. Put the keys in your pocket.
