  1. I bet he went camping.
  2. MDC does have restrictions, permits, and regulations in place regarding captive deer. The MDC has had them in the rule book going back to 1984 it looks like. Feel free to browse the sections 9 and 10 regarding them. Its a pretty good read and encompasses captivity of all game animal species. http://www.sos.mo.gov/adrules/csr/current/3csr/3csr.asp Deer have to be confined to a minimum of a 8 foot fence. Most breeders I know line the fence with some kind of material to keep the deer from being spooked by things walking up outside of the fence and nosey neighbors. They were reguired to send a head in if a deer dies for CWD testing. They have routine inspections by a MDC agent to check compliance with breeding guidelines. Deer are ear tagged and registered, any movement between farms is documented. A vet does an inspection also. I do believe that the MDC may be trying to put some of the regulation of deer farms off onto the Dept. of Agriculture, but I don't know it as a fact. White tail deer still fall under the wildlife code as many other captive animals. The trouble with the detection of CWD in deer is that the only real test for it requires a brain tissue sample. It can't be performed on a live deer. And there is alot to learn about the disease that has yet to come to life.
  3. Nope, I saw it too. I guess Phil must have fixed it.
  4. Morels are funny creatures. They are really picky about where they want to grow. And there is a narrow window of growth requiring the right amount of moisture, temp, and light. I don't know if a kit will produce any mushrooms, but feel free to keep us posted.
  5. How do you come to the conclusion that there are no restrictions in place not regarding deer farms? I know for a fact, as I have friends that own 4 farms locally, there are restrictions, testing, required paperwork, licensing, etc. in place that is monitored by the MDC at these farms and it has been that way for at least 4 years. I was personally involved in one of them when they started building the deer farm and have a little first hand knowledge. He has since sold out due to losses last season from EHD. As far as the bill goes, it is the first that I have heard about it having any relationship to the MDC. But I would surely vote against it in a public election. As you all know, I am for a smaller government with less executive powers.
  6. I agree with that one. Most streams you can paddle back up, walk thru the riffles, fish while you are doing it. I think the pole would be a waste of time.
  7. Contractors round here are wondering how far down the frost line has gone. This has been one of the longest cold spells in a while. Not only is stuff froze on top of the ground, the ground is frozen pretty deep and will need more time to thaw. Hopefully, the raised beds will thaw enough in the next couple of days to pull the old stuff out. Then I can put the glass covers on and dry them out some. Maybe plant some next weekend. I have a feeling the cold has done a number on the bee hives. I have piles of dead bees in front of each hive. With temps in the 60's this week, I will be able to go in and take a look for the first time since October and see how they are doing.
  8. Add one thing to sweeten the pot, Guided Trips for the entire hunt. Just think how tired you would be setting up dekes from Labor Day to Valentine's Day. Don't forget sinkboats on each coastline setup for divers. A great saltwater hunt would be fun and you could pick up some of those coastal ducks. I have connections to do the Alaska hunt, a friend has some land near Portage with a marsh and a blind. He also goes to Fairbanks each year for Sandhill Crane. I just have a hard time dropping that kind of coin for the plane ride just to kill a few birds. But I have always wanted to experience Alaska that time of year.
  9. Same bill as my link. And it will go to a public vote at the polls for all Missourians to decide, that will be the time to stop it. MDC should not fall under the powers of this bill as they are not funded by State Taxpayer Dollars collected by the State. They are funded by a sales tax and license fees and are governed by their own board of directors. As far as moving the Deer Farming over to the Dept of Ag to regulate, I could see that as a logical move as it is a Agricultural venture, not wildlife conservation.
  10. Yep, it is a promulgation. But I see no reference to MDC http://legiscan.com/MO/text/SJR42/id/914881
  11. I managed a Godfather's Pizza back in the 80's for 6 years. Best time of my life, and some of the best eating. They have all closed up shop in this area.
  12. I see the queer guy thread disappeared. Must have something to do with it.
  13. what post?
  14. The snow gods have delayed this years crop already. For the last several years, lettuce and other cole crops have hit the dirt on Feb. 14. Today, the permafrost is deeper than ever. The raised beds still hold stalks and roots from last fall's crops, frozen in place. The 3 inch ice layer that has blanketed everything around here finally melted today. But the weather turned in an hour and flash froze it back and put some white stuff back on. How is every one else's garden doing?
  15. If you honestly believe that the MDC has not been swayed in the last 75 years by politics, you are living in fairy land.
  16. Been itching to go, but the ramps are screwed. Water too low in the channel here to launch. One ramp has about 20' of gravel showning past the end of the concrete. The other has a sandbar. Now should be the time. Late January and February on Pickwick was always good. The rivers around here seem to follow the same.
  17. I have loaded an ATV in the truck, chained it to a tree at the pullout, rode it back to the truck. I was canoeing with another person so I had someone to watch the stuff. It was during the week and the ATV did not get molested.
  18. Controlling invasive species on Busch Wildlife area is a hoot. If anything, they are preventing you from taking any of the toxic stuff out of the old munitions dump.
  19. It is hard to explain it to someone too. Was it the original style or the materelli style finisher?

    Potato Rolls

That is a lot of rolls for 2 people.
  21. I don't own a dog, but here is a good shot of one from the neighbor.
  22. MDC must have brought in some of both with the elk, cougars and wolves. Just stands to reason from a management standpoint, they have to have a big predator to weed out the sick and old in the herd. The poor little coyote is not big enough to get the job done. And the Rocky Mountain Elk guys probably demanded it as a package deal.
  23. They follow the Elk. Just like the cougars.
  24. They bring about $80 a pelt, I know of several guys that would like to break your pack up. Bobcats around here are solitary and very reclusive.
  25. Then Wayne, you are agreeing that he did the right thing, he shot it to protect someone's livestock. We do not need any new large predators roaming our countryside here in MO. I am tired of paying $10 a pound for my steaks. How could you support protection of a wolf and not condemn coyote hunting? The coyotes are just as majestic as a wolf, a very nice animal in full winter fur. And their songs of a night are fun to listen to. They are pack animals with a sense of territory like the wolves, they have a heirarchy in the packs like the wolves. I doubt that mistaking it for a coyote was his best defense. Hunting coyotes with dogs during firearms season is illegal during the daylight. The only way to hunt them is if you are in possession of a valid firearms deer tag as a secondary kill. Again, all of the articles that I have read tell nothing about the events that really took place when he shot it.
