  1. We catch most of our cats during the day.
  2. Water looks good.
  3. The Crappie are overpopulated and stunted and I fill the livewell and toss them into the local pond. The bluegill are great in the spring, catfish have been good lately. There are striped bass, few and far between. Largemouth are there but you need to go deep to get them. This time of year and without any rains for the last month, it has been stagnant and fishing poor. You seldom see many people there, even on a holiday weekend. But the fish are there. Be extremely careful running a motor in the lake. You can be running in 22 ft of water and nail a tree hiding in what looks like open water. Loads of standing timber, shallow flats, and the MDC aerates the lake.
  4. Put a life jacket on him and make him wear it at all times and you should be fine. Keep one handy or on yourself in case you spill and have to go get him. I don't know what you are capable of in a canoe, but with you sitting in back controlling the boat, you should not have any problems on that stretch. Halls Bay after Boze Mill is the real tricky spot along with a few bends. Should be a nice weekend for a trip.
  5. There are fishermen and then there are those that just fish. I guess that is why they stock it so much to even up the fishing for all.
  6. Looks like a little front coming thru Thurs that is dropping the temps next week. It might bring a few down.
  7. If they don't like the rules, fish for fun.
  8. Our Poor Folk's have it made. Food Stamps, Welfare, Housing, Transportation, Medical Care, Cell Phones, and they are rewarded every time they bring another child into the world by Earned Income Tax Credits. They should really see how others like this have to struggle.
  9. The water in the livewell was so stained that you could not see the cats in the bottom. I had to drain it out to count them while on the lake. That lake has alot of timber and the water is stained and stagnant. They have an aeration system installed, but it never really helps. Fishing is good there, but all the fish seem to be tainted from the water quality.
  10. Where are you at?
  11. If you are ever in TN, this is the place with some good catfish. http://www.topotheriverrestaurant.com/ Looking at the menu, I am thinking they may pluck them out of the water young for better taste. Fiddlers are what we call them. I suppose filleted they may taste the same. Nothing like the 2-5 lb ones I was catching yesterday. Front came in today, shut everything off. I came back today with zilch. Only a few small bass early.
  12. Back then, POTUS did not get up in a news conference and make idle threats to look cool. Nor did he give out specifics of a military exercise to the enemy on national TV either.
  13. I don't mind fishy, but like fins, I don't like something that smells like a sewer pond when I prepare it. These MDC lakes get pretty stale this time of year, not much fresh water in a while. Perry County Lake actually has an aeration system to improve the O2 levels. But water was green and murky. I will try some vinegar or buttermilk. I like the McCormicks Cajun breading along with some jalapeno hushpuppies.
  14. It is the Nimitz battle group being redeployed to Syria in operation Obama Temper Tantrum. Clicked on it last night and made it my avatar. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/02/us-syria-crisis-ships-idUSBRE9810DA20130902?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews
  15. They are channel cats. Flesh is yellow and oily. Maybe the vinegar will cut the oil.
  16. Been kinda lazy this summer. Taking short trips to local lakes in the new to me bass boat when I am home. Last couple of trips to Perry County Lake has produced an abundance of catfish. Easy fishing, sitting back in a shaded cove, sipping brews and listening to tunes. Nice and relaxing. Normally I just toss them into the pond, but a few died on the way home and I decided to clean them out. I have skinned and filleted them out. Now I need a good way to cook them up. I have fried and grilled them in the past, but they still taste like the muddy stagnant lakes they come out of. Last weekend, while fishing Pickwick Lake, we had dinner at Top of the River Catfish place. I had the fried crawdad tails and shrimp scampi, but I sampled their catfish also. It was excellent, white and firm, no fishy taste. I really think it was sauger or walleye, but they said catfish. So, what are the recipes and marinades that work the best? What do I soak the filets in to get the muddy taste out?
  17. Get a piece of stainless screen and make a divider.
  18. I am going to raised beds next year. I have too much trouble control moisture and soil content with my current setup. I started a few a couple of years ago and they have done well. May save the main garden for flowers and corn. I have tossed some lettuce, radishes, mustard, and turnips in the last few weeks. I watered and all come up. Cool spell coming on Monday, fall is not far off.
  19. Jeesh, I would rather sit at home and bang my fingers in a screen door than go near a major river this weekend and expect to "fish".
  20. I think he meant 35lb thrust, not horsepower.
  21. I think there is a governing body that oversees dams of any type, especially ones that threaten the lives of others. A few years back there was some flack from someone regarding improperly built personal lakes that flood others property. I think Ameren UE and Taum Sauk comes to mind. Personal dams still are responsible if they break and flood other property.
  22. I had to water the remnants of the garden today. Finally reached a dry spell here.
  23. Gavin is talking about Port Perry, not Perry County lake.
  24. I saw a couple early in July, none since. Maybe hornworms are becoming extinct.
  25. I doubt you would want to, if I remember right, it increases blood flow. That would spread poison around quicker in the case of a snake bite. Consult your physician. Just curious about the bees, did the reaction cause your breathing to stop?
