What Should We Do About Mass Shootings?
jdmidwest replied to jdmidwest's topic in New News and General Discussion
With the fear of a gun grab going around, there are many new gun owners out there that have never owned them before. Gunshops in my area are stripped of AR's, Handguns, Defensive Shotguns, and Ruger 10-22's. Lots of new gun owners out there. There are bound to be accidents. That is why I am pushing for more training. -
Why not? With a nice bull barrel and a good scope, you can nail a bunch of them. I have several friends that use them when they go out. I personally have not had the opportunity. Cheap brass, cheap to reload = cheap shooting. Or you can swap uppers and start in with 22lr.
-
I have not spent much time in that area, but friends have. I wonder why he left a road and hit a trail when it was raining and he had no rain gear?
-
Dang, the media got something wrong?

There is only one man to really believe in. The rest could be fakes. You really should not believe in false idols either.

I really don't think the problems with the mental illness are the ones that forget stuff or have a stroke. It is schitzophrenia and other agressive split personality disorders that we have to worry about. Ones like the lady a few weeks ago that was getting her kicks pushing people in front of trains. And ones like the attack on Gabby Giffords, the movie theater, and the school. Violent mental illness is the issue. Surely the drugs to treat the individuals could be flagged in the system and the individuals on them could be blackballed to where they could not buy a firearm. The trouble is, the ACLU protects their rights to privacy and they do not show up in databases.

What if you are hunting multiple animals? While prarie dog hunting, it is common to go thru several hundred rounds a day. That is where the AR and a 30 round mag comes in handy. For deer and other animals, 10 rounds in both the AR and my 10-22. Deer usually only take 1 shot most of the time, unless I decide to fill multiple tags, buck and doe, 2 does. Squirrels sometimes fall several at a time from the 10-22.

Sorry, I did not see the black folk part, I thought it was just people in general. I am not a racist. I have just grown sick and tired of people coming up with numbers that seem to support their cause, did not read the fine print. And I thought JOED was going to shove it all up the anti gunners butt, I may have mistaken that too........

Exactly, too many people in the world today. Something has to thin them out.

It did not stop Columbine, Jonesboro, or any of the others that happened after Columbine. Sandy Hook was in a state that still had most of the original gun ban in place, mags were banned. Why do it? Because they have been itching to do it again since the last ban was lifted. They just love to pee us gun owners off with worthless legislation. And it creates a distraction from what they should really be doing like creating a budget, controlling the debt, and all of the other stuff we elected them for.
-
I can count the holes in the mag you left in the box...... Better save your ammo, it is gone around here. 22lr, 9mm, 40, 45, 223 all gone bye bye. What you have in reserve is all you will have till this thing gets caught up again. Our XD shelf at the store is pretty bare, as is Glock, M&P, SIG, Ruger, and others. We still have some Berettas, 1911's, Kahr's, and other misc auto. Mostly 40's, 9's and 45's went quick.

And being compassionate enough to pass stuff along so we don't have to post another one like this.

Nice catch F&F. I have my eye on a 3.5 XDM at the shop. I have not owned an XD yet but have been wanting to try. Those are going to be on the hitlist.

The 3 gun competition is one that I can think of. It consists of a sporting event where you run a time course using a sidearm, shotgun, and AR15. The course is designed for hi capacity magazines in the sidearm and AR 15, extended tube in the shotgun. There are other competitions that use them too. Restricting a magazine to 10 rounds only requires a shooter to reload more often, it will not prevent gun violence. As far as the face to face sale of firearms from a private collection to another person, IE gunshow loophole, will be a hard one to enforce. Once again, it will not prevent any violent shootings. People that fail to pass a current background check will often dupe a friend or wife into buying one for them. That is illegal too. It happened recently in the Firefighter shooting last month, the felon was not able to buy a gun legally so he had someone else buy it for him. The buyer was arrested and charged for the illegal act of purchase for the felon, but it did not stop the shooting. Executive order 7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign. Proposed by Obama yesterday may help. I assume it will fund the NRA training programs and make more people competent gun owners and possible safer. 9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations. 10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement. 13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime. Those 3 will force law enforcement to take a more active role and the prosecution to actually convict the persons that cause this mess in the first place. They should have no effect on law abiding citizens that own firearms. Above all, educate people that they alone are responsible for their personal safety first and foremost. They are responsible for the actions of their family members. Hold the people that are to blame accountable for their actions. Don't penalize those that follow the rules.

Kind of hard to tell him what to do now. Like I, yes I said I, stated, it is information to prevent another tragedy like this from happening. I don't want to read another story about a father and two sons dead of hypothermia. And if he had been carrying a gun, he could have fired shots in the air to signal the search party. Gun shot sounds would carry far in the woods. I would have been carrying a gun with spare ammo.

Cmon, let her rip. -
Yep. Pretty bad in there, they had not wiped the seat down in a while. I had to start the encounter with a "hover". Trapped there overnight with the smell would have been tragic. I would have died from the methane buildup long before hypothermia set in.

Like many, you condemn the firearm based on the looks. Many hunting rifles are using the .223 round. In full metal jacket form like you used in the guard, it was designed to comply with the Geneva Convention as a non expanding projectile. It became popular based on surplus ammo from the military, as did the .308 and the 7.62x39. Cheap brass and cheap practice rounds. But, all bullet manufacturers make expanding bullets to insert into the cartridge that makes it a proper hunting round. The bullet fragments and expands to a larger diameter creating more efficient wound channels to properly dispatch wild game. Full Metal Jacket military rounds are not allowed in MO for hunting purposes. They are for target or military. .223 expanding ammo is perfectly legal and is made for hunting. And for self defense, it is preferred over the military FMG for its lethality. I can tolerate the restriction on hunting magazines, I have 5 and 10 rounders I use for hunting game in MO. But I like 20 rounders for target shooting, that is what the gun was made with and balances with. And you are not in the guard, so you are not the militia any more? Do you still respect the oath to protect the Constitution of the USA? No disrespect, I honor your service to our country.

Why can't I own any weapon I want to buy? I don't use them for anything illegal. If I did, current background checks would prohibit me from buying one. I can go thru a background check, pay an outrageous tax, and own a fully auto if I desire. And with the AWB, I can still do it, it does not affect fully auto. I could still do it with the previous AWB. And with the full auto, I could really do alot of damage and still be legal. But, the same gun, semi auto like a majority of firearms, I am branded a threat and can't buy one off the shelf with almost the same criteria and no tax. Seems like they only want the tax. I hunt deer with an AR 15. I hunt coyote with an AR 15. I hunt groundhogs with an AR 15. I hunt feral hogs with an AR 15. I have owned and hunted with one since 1986. I am perfectly legal and responsible when I do it. I enjoy building new rifles based on the AR 15 platform, until recently when parts became extinct again. I really don't want to give up that luxury again.

Don't yell. Stinking Pond is a slough down river, a float camp located there. I assume you are talking about the hole where the island splits the river below 19 access. I have called it stair step hole or boat hole. Years ago there was a lodge of sort that had a stair step leading down to it. There was also a sunken boat in it. You go down hill past the foundation remnants to the old cemetary to access the end of the island split.

There are some farfetched things in there. But the parents of kids killed laughing and joking it up, I really don't care how strong you are, you lose a kid and you will not act like that. My problem has always been the fact that all were DOA, no other injured. And the second person that was reported. And all of the reports on the first day only mentioning 2 handguns, nothing else. Then it was an AR only. Do you really thing the gov is not capable of pulling it off?

I was not making light of the tragedy, just using it hoping to prevent something like this in the future. Some of my friends swear that I could live out of my vehicle for a week in any type of weather, but they have appreciated that also when I have stuff to spare. On any trip, there is usually one change of dry clothes and rain gear close by. I hardly wear cotton any more, poly, wool, goretex are all staples. I have sit out in an open kayak in the pouring rain duck hunting and been so comfortable that my snoring irritates my buddy. But I will be the last to ever say it could not happen to me. There was this one time at Baptist Access where I stripped down to jeans and a shirt and run up to use the pit toilet after fishing all day. Something happened and the door stuck, I was locked in, metal against metal froze in the 20 degree weather. I was able to get out after a little work prying the latch with my leatherman. But 20 degrees, night approaching, no warm clothing, food, or water, nobody really knew I was there, and chances of anyone coming along slim. I could have been toast if I had not gotten out.

Beer just shot out of my nose on that one...... -
Too Fast, Too Furious. They could not decide on the fiscal cliff, they can't come up with a budget to make the country fiscally responsible, they can't do anything but the "agenda". This is what we really should worry about. Watch this.

I have not seen any references to any preparation other than a flashlight and some food. Light clothing, not weather proof.
