Arkansas allows the landowner to go to the edge of the river as far as trespass goes. But if you are in the water and entered it legally you are ok. But she can keep you off the bank.

I was thinking about the rod idea for duck hunting. Normally we just sit in the boats shallow enough where they touch the bottom and it keeps us anchored. But there are times that the water is about waist deep, the rods stuck in the mud would make a good stable anchor. An anchor on a rope lets the boat pivot too much to be of any use, you almost have to use a 2 pt system. For the most part, I don't anchor the yak. I use moss beds, trees, or swing my feet over the side and hold the boat while I fish. Anchor rope is just something else to snag on bringing a fish in. For the bass boat, that system would work great also and several hundred dollars less than a power anchor in shallow water. Would not work too good in a gravel or rock bottom like a stream I am guessing.

Carrying a gun for protection has alot of responsibility, more than any of the 2 parties involved possessed at that moment on the gravel bar. I carry a gun because there are boneheads like that roaming around all over.

Picked my first real big ripe tomato today. Been picking about a quart of grape and little sweeties each day. Cherry tomatoes are just starting to ripen, wild plant that grew out of the composter again this year. Okra is putting on. Sweet corn needs picked this afternoon, squirrels have let me have it this year, they did not bother it. Cucumbers are producing about a peck ever week, just take most of them over to the neighbor so he can make pickles. Few yellow squash and zucs. We did get about a tenth of soaking rain last evening and 2 inches on Tues. Garden perked back up after that. 7 hives of bees and none on the garden. Lots of blooms again and nothing setting fruit. I should have 3 times the amount of cucumbers. Pumpkins have been blooming a month and have not set a one.

It is somewhere above C Hwy. All I was told it was 4x4 going in, not really sure if the guy still owns it. Trouble with an overnighter on any part of the area is leaving a vehicle at a public access. Might not be in one piece when you return. I will probably get Dad to put us in and pull us out.

Al, people just need to get back to reality. They need to respect others and have some morals and common sense. You can beat a horse all you want, but it will not fix the problems. It has to realize what the problem is and change it itself.

I think we are going to do the 34 bridge to Bounds Creek on Sunday now, new time constraints. Bees are getting moved to the farm Sat. night and I need to settle them in Sunday morn. I am looking at pulling an overnighter in the next few weeks on the upper portions. My new floating buddy has access to some property that we can camp on 1/2 way thru a 15 mile section. New water for me, looking forward to it.

The edges of the deep holes produce, if there are rocks to hold the fish high. I have run cranks thru the middle of the deep holes and produced a few fish at times. I typically save those long slow floats for later in Aug. But with the temps this weekend, I think it will be great.

I gave up a long time ago. I pay someone to haul my trash off at the house and am limited as to how much I deposit on a weekly basis. MDC used to have trash cans at most boat ramps, but they are gone. Where do you put the trash when you pick it up? I personally would rather educate others to leave no trace, pick up your own trash.

Any one with the common sense that has been granted to them by the creator would have exited the scene at the first warning shot. There is a man on a gravel bar that is claiming it is his, he has a gun, and he has fired warning shots. Time to go, end of story, period. Leave the scene, your life is in danger. At this point in time, do you really think picking up rocks and advancing is an alternative?

There is another access at the Scout Camp unless they have closed it. It takes some time off of the float. I have never fished from the Scout Camp down because of that boulder field. But we sailed thru several of them on the Big Creek float from Brunot a few years back. Water was up and it was still a pain. Too cold for snakes still when we did that float. They have picked up some water in the last few days, I need to check gauges and see. The float down to the MDC access is a great float, but it is a daylight to dark float with some paddling. The GPS units are great, I can read the water ahead and paddle the holes to make up time. My memory is getting so weak that all of the streams are looking the same now. Electronics are a real plus. This weekend is looking really nice, temps in low 80's. I am leaning that way pretty hard now.

Bottom line is that people need to learn how to act in public. Morals and ethics have went out the door a long time ago for most of the general public anyway. It has been an ongoing conflict in the past few years on rivers, drunks, nudity, rude behavior, litter, and mass flotillas of party animals. You really can't hold the rental places responsible for others actions. They don't babysit from entry to takeout points. Landowner should have handled it differently. He marked his land with stakes and a ribbon. IF they were trespassing, he had the right to ask them to leave. If they refuse, get law enforcement involved. Don't go getting a gun involved. Don't fire a warning shot. What if it would have ricocheted and killed an innocent child? At this point, it is just a trespasser on your land, not a threat to your life. Floaters should have had more respect. If someone points out that you may be trespassing, don't argue, just leave and then get law enforcement involved. You can see what the end result is when you argue, threaten, and antagonize someone that feels they are a rightful landowner. Nothing on a gravel bar is worth your life. Let him have it and leave. When it accelerated to the point that the landowner is cornered and several people are threatening him with bodily harm, then self defense MIGHT have come into play. The floaters were clearly threatening him at this point with rocks and bodily harm. But he still had the option to leave and get law enforcement involved, maybe. He MIGHT have been surrounded and had no exit. A clear definition of the right of way and passage on all streams really needs to be defined. But until it is, there will be more and more conflicts due to the confusion of the law. Most of the articles I have read about this incident points out most of the above. Maybe we can lobby to get a good, FINAL, definition to stream access. I would be more than happy with a law that states waters edge + 50 feet of bank on all waters of the state defined as a public easement. That would allow docking and portage on almost any waterway in the state. Plenty of room to get out and whiz, have a shore lunch, and a good stretch to get rid of the canoe butt.

I was just thinking about Saco to Coldwater access on Sunday. That is a full day and usually paddle half of it to get there by dark. I have never been on the stretch you floated, How long was the float? I have wanted to see the boulder garden that I have always heard about. That is why we were told not to float it in canoes.

In all accounts, the landowner was yelling for them to get off his property. They clearly knew they did not own the property. They were unclear whether they could be there legally. Therefore, they were trespassing, they should leave and avoid a confrontation. I really don't think he would have shot them in the back as they were paddling off.

Arkansas requires a PFD in canoes and kayaks. It is not required to wear one, just have one accessible. Stored in a dry hatch does not count, I keep mine on the deck with deck rigging. That is only if they are picking hairs for details.
