  1. Oh my! Not just great looking flies, but excellent photography of them. Nicely done!
  2. I got the book today. In the front, the author says Spencer 'planted the seed' for the book. Also, several of his papers are listed in the bibliography.
  3. That's pretty cool. I just ordered the book too.
  4. That would be great-thanks! This has me wanting to ferment something. It’s been a while. I finished off the last of the cider a while back and there’s nothing in the cellar.
  5. How sweet did the mead finish?
  6. Looking good! A suggestion: If you're not going to drink it real soon, it would be better to not have a large air space on top. (Contamination/oxidation). Either smaller bottles or I suppose you could use some clean marbles or glass beads to raise the level and reduce the air space.
  7. There are good guides, and there are great guides. (And mediocre, and bad guides). Congrats to both the guide and the guided for a very successful outing.
  8. Nicely done, dad!! Congratulations to both of you. I hope you'll encourage her to give you grief for out fishing the old man every chance she gets! It'll help keep the spark alive!
  9. Nicely done! Any news on who the dog belongs to?

    Garden 2022

Doing a little research about last frost dates here. I went through my notes and old posts here and found the following frosts/freezes after our zone 6 average last frost date of 4/15. Not a comprehensive list, just ones I made note of: 4/30/2011 4/22/2013 5/10/2014 5/9/2020 4/19-4/21/2021 4/19/2022 (31 degrees) Here's a distribution of last frost dates I found for zone 6, where most of us are. So, average = 50% = 4/15. 70% chance you're good tomorrow or later, and 90% on 4/30 or later. Frost 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 5% 1% Last 4/15 4/18 4/21 4/25 4/30 5/4 5/13 First 10/23 10/20 10/17 10/13 10/9 10/5 9/29 That frost on 5/9/2020 above was <5% chance. Peas, spinach, beets, carrots, radishes and Swiss chard are in the ground. Tomatoes, peppers, basil and about ½ the lettuce are under lights. 10 day forecast looks good, but based on the history here, and a little more patience about these things lately, I may wait a couple more weeks.
  11. Cool stuff! I've been wondering how the swarm trap thing works.
  12. I should have mentioned, he's 4'6"
  13. Refresh ...
  14. Got a text from my nephew Devin recently. I used to fish with him when he was just a little guy, and we did many family trips to Roaring River as he was growing up. Unfortunately he lives in FL now, and I haven't seen him in a few years. But he did send me this picture: Anybody wanna guess at a weight? He didn't have scale.
  15. I got a 'Helpful' badge, so I knew something was screwed up
  16. That's a thing of beauty! Did you have the resident artiste arrange those?

    What's Cooking?

I'm gonna have to look up what a lengua is before I commit El Camino Real at 7th and Minnesota is really good stuff. Dos de Oros Taqueria at Holmes and Blue Ridge is good too. They have all kinds of tacos and interesting salsas. Not their restaurant up the street, the little taqueria on the corner.

    What's Cooking?

No, but with a recommendation like that I will give it a try.
  19. I dunno. Doesn't sound very maple syrupy. Here's what we got https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BZCH7H5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    What's Cooking?

Nice! I love a good tamale, but good ones are hard to find around here. None of the ones I've tried from Mexican restaurants around here are anything special.
  21. We were just talking about that the other day. Haven't had it for years, but we do like it. Chocolate version too; we had that a lot as kids. Well, I'll say it again: you just haven't had it cooked right. Steel cut, with a little butter and real maple syrup is really good eating, IMO. The missus loves it with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  22. I've heard about that place too. Sounds terrible. That one always makes me cry.
  23. I haven't read that thread since the early posts and probably won't. But, if you think it may go south, what about a gentle rule reminder beforehand? That just might turn things the right way before it goes bad. And doing it in the topic instead of behind the scenes would be a reminder to all of us. I'd do it, but nobody would listen to me.
  24. I do appreciate what you and the mods do, and I think I've let all of you know that before too. I suspect the vast majority of us do. I suppose I ought to use the 'follow' function more for subforums/topics I like, and quit reading the noise because I end up grumpy too often. Now, where's the post where you went off on wrench? I must have missed it, and it would probably cheer me up
  25. I get that. I don’t think you need to be harsh to be effective. How about, ‘Hey guys, let’s not let this one go off the rails’ before it does? Or, ‘Careful here or I’ll axe the thread.’ Are you scared of the anti-censorship thugs?😀
