Buuuuuuuurp I suggest to try peppered dove if you ever have the chance. Hank Shaw recipe. Follow it to the T. Green peppercorn makes it.

Two more morning trips. Yesterday again in the cornfield that silage was taken off of. We shot 21. Quit about 8:30. We know where these birds are going to water. Checked it out later that afternoon. Would be a great shoot there. Too hot really but I might try one evening this week. , Back again this morning with a take of 18 between us. I really shot good with a 1.57 shot average per bird. Pat not so well this time. Again quit about 8:30. Dove is on the menu this afternoon. We like dove hunting but not the weather that goes with it.

I prefer our own cooking to anything else. Wouldn't mind a meal at the @rps household.

Wyoming Swing Starts Tomorrow

We loved the Pinedale area. To the West just north of Pinedale we caught multiple Colorado River cutthroat on South Cottonwood creek. Made that trip twice. Good roads back there about 20 miles of dirt. Been up the upper Green twice to the headwaters at green river lake. Once with kayaks in trailer behind pickup with overhead camper. Had the kayaks on that lake. I caught a small lake trout in the lake on fly gear. A splake Brook trout and lake trout hybrid in the upper green below the lake on a bug heavy nymph fished deep. You are right for one thing that is one washboard rough road up to the top. We drove easy but were passed by others doing who knows what speed pulling campers and even fifth wheel campers up that road to the forest campground. Northwest of Pinedale on 189/191 will take you to over another range and along the Hoback river. Off that river Cliff Creek dumps into the Hoback. In the Hoback are Snake River findspot cutthroat. Ther is access to the Hoback for wading and bank fishing, but it is spotty. All of Cliff Creek is on National Forest. That little creek is fun to fish. Have stopped there and camped three times for one night but always took the time to catch snake river cutthroat. Now I want to go back to Pinedale. Next year when Pat retires, we should be able to hit the road for a couple weeks again. Same goes for everyone on here like I told Bill. If you don't mind a DYI for cutthroat in Wyoming I have maps marked and will share places. Everyone that can should experience the natives and fishing out west. August is hopper season and the time to be there. -

I am sorry it was so tough Bill. This is just why we fish out of the way places and small water and catch lots of fish on our own. Cutthroat that matches or beat what you will catch with a guide. We don't mind the brook trout and eat everyone we get the chance to but don't kill just to kill. Where we fish, they are invasive and cross with the natives which is exactually what we target. I Wyoming you are right there is no getting out of the boat or even dropping anchor in the river or stream. Montana is the best around. Anywhere you can get in and stay below the high water mark you are golden. -
We are out this evening. No go this morning. Not flying to well I have 5 and Pat 3. Her shot to kill ratio is better than mine.

Professional fishing only for the tough!

No man it was a good post. We just don't see everything the same way as others. I like to fly fish and don't care what I catch with the long stick, fairy rod or whatever you call it. I get grief from guys here on this site. Some don't get it and I get into some dangerous situations at times flyfishing in dicey spots. Wife and I have gone many miles and fished many places that those guys with nice hotels and nice boat ramps and high dollar boats and on and on would not do. Do what you like and like what you do. I compete with no one but myself. One thing for sure we can agree on is what all of us will do to catch fish or a certain fish or a type of fish. -

You have to set the hook so hard you cross their eyes. Either yank them in the boat so quickly if they are small to a position that they are flopping on the floor. Unhook and toss back. Big ones are netted and measured to see if they can replace the big ones in the live well. If it's bigger it gets a marker put through the lips. A smaller one is taken out and pull marker out of its lips and tossed back. Repeat, repeat and repeat again until the end of the Bonafide tourney. Then to the weigh in where fish is paraded around in a water filled bag to be weighed and measured again. All fish released alive and maybe beat up some but a long way from its home. -

I know Ham and he works harder than anyone on here. -
Sorry you have broken down Ryan. I understand fully. Good luck on the doves, Pat and I won't be going out Friday morning but maybe afternoon if we get done with the morning plans. Teal I am sure I will be going birds around or not.

"All it takes is a little imagination, some mechanical ability, and OAF forum members who don't know what they are talking to mind their own business." OK I did change Red Greens quote a little bit. 😁 -

Well, you can count me as one using the old stuff and have at Bennitt springs. Since I have been using the stuff, I am beginning to notice more doing the same thing. Last time over there I actually seen a guy standing on the dam fishing an old rod. Can tell because it's a thicker rod and pretty slow action. -

tjm, I looked and yes it could be used by turning around. The edges of the reel are smooth enough not to damage the line rubbing against the sides. You are correct no difference winding either way against the drag. As far as reeling right-handed I still do on spinning reels, but I cannot raise left arm holding rod above my shoulder because the shoulder is shot. So, with a fly rod with leader about impossible to get a fish in a net. Really need to stay left had retrieve. Since you can adapt this reel is yours if you want it. Use it, study it, add it to your stuff. Use the PM option on here and send address I will get it to you. If you happen to have a repeat reel left hand retrieve about same size, we can trade if not still no problem. Would rather have this go to someone that would appreciate it. Marty -

Great fish! Thanks for posting. Your fishing partner will have a leg up on his peers when he starts fishing.

@tjm, The RH reel in question looks like it never had the click parts at all. It does have a brake though. Here is a couple pictures of the inside of reel and spool and you can see the place where it rides on the brake/drag or whatever it is called. If you look closely on the spool there is a PC on the reel about two o'clock. Might help in ID. -

Courtland has the 444 Sylk that is a modern version built for bamboo rods. 444 Sylk - Freshwater Floating Fly Line – Cortland Line Company -
Yes, I bought more vintage fly-fishing stuff. I like Vintage useful stuff. Like my cast iron deal. I will tell you right now I have less money in my vintage fly rod stuff than I do in my most expensive piece of cast iron cookware. I have two close friends that call me a tight arse because I won't pay up on some things and miss out on an auction or for the asking price. I say that is just being smart. If I don't get buried with this stuff Pat is going to have one giant garage sale. Date still to be determined. This first item I bought the day I took my 3wt for it's first fishing trip. On way home I stopped for a package of chips and soft drink on way home. This was a tackle shop/camping supplies and some other outdoor stuff. Most everything was new and a good selection. In one glass counter was two fly reels. Both Scientific Anglers. One I could tell was newer and in bad shape the other I took out and looked at it. Both had a tag of 10.95 each. It was soiled and needed cleaning. Line looked ok. It was an Air Cell 7wt WF bass bug taper. Reel said Scientific Anglers across the top. One Thirty in center and across the bottom Custom Crafter in England by Hardy Bros Ltd. I tried to google it but no signal. Made up my mind to buy it. Pulled over down the road when hit signal and WOW. I will let you know guys do the same. I did good here. I shot a text to @kjackson and he filled me in on what he knew about it plus contacted a friend that workes for Scientific Anglers. Reel is from 1969 to 1972. Vintage you bet ya. So forward to last Saturday. Pat and I went for a ride. A few miles from home we ran upon a auction. On the signs that had been up for a couple weeks it said Real Estate, but I did not know it was everything else the place or owners had. We stopped just to look it was already hot and miserable. I asked a friend who was helping if any fly gear. Down the hill way to the west a bamboo rod and some fly reels. Yep there was. Three-piece Shakespeare with a reel and the bundle was zip tied together, heavy zip ties. I looked it over and had my buddy bid for it. We left and were gone for hours. I called him on way home and auction was still going on. So much stuff to sell. I went by and picked up my prize. I looked it up and here is what I found. Thank you Mark on the Classic Fly Rod Forum. The No.1362 "Spring Brook" was introduced in Shakespeare's 1932 catalog, available only in 9 ft. "Bass" action. By 1935, it was offered in three lengths (8, 8-1/2 and 9 ft.) and recommended for either trout or bass, depending on the line weight used. Beginning in 1950, it was available in 8-1/2 or 9 ft. lengths in EITHER Trout action (No.1962-T) or Bass action (No.1362-B). It would be one of the last models available in 1952, after which Shakespeare discontinued bamboo rods forever. I have since thrown the 7wt with the SA reel on the bamboo rod. I am impressed with the rod. Would like a older reel to go with the older rod. Which broings me to the reel that was on the rod. Non marked RH retrieve it has been cleaned up and junk like stripped off. No drag, no clicker. Here is the reel any ideas. I don't do RH so if anyone is interested in reel let me know. Story over. I may use this rod some and catch a fish.
