Question for the fly tying brain trust
BilletHead replied to BilletHead's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
This is why I am asking. @tjm and @fishinwrench between the two of you I got a combo idea. Out to the shop I go! BilletHead -
Atta boy @Lance34 You will like walleye man. Just had walleye po' boy sandwiches yesterday. For your first one I would not do a thing but coat lightly fry and eat so you can taste the fish. Just my opinion. BilletHead

Excuse me boys I was not arguing at all. I was simply responding to the original poster about what fits our needs and asking ness if he had ever been in one? That and talking about camping. To each his own and I am not trying to change your minds. Have you been in a fishing kayak one @ness. Also I have seen your nice new ride. Pictures please of it in there with hatch closed. That rig is too nice to slide a canoe in IMO. I know you are not asking but a small trailer would be nice. Yes canoes make great transportation. Our first natives and our first settlers and trappers did just that, BilletHead

Ok guys I like to tie some flies with collars with fur instead of hackle. Some I say not all. Especially squirrel nymphs. Usually take fur mix and into split thread or dubbing loop. Tease hair and spin up. I have messes with all kinds of clips to use like the petitjean magic tool. None worked with a darn so how many have one and how do you like it? Thinking I should get a set. Speaking of squirrel I finished up tanning and softening a fox squirrel a few days ago. Pulled a grey out of the pickle/tanning solution this morning and am stretching and softening it now. It has some of the longest guard hairs I have even seen. At the base some measure an inch long . I plan on keeping more next season in fall and winter when they are prime and tanning a few more. I built an armored feeder for my little friends. Have not shot one off of it yet. I prefer to hit the woods spot and stalk. This little guy was out back a few days ago getting a snack. I figure I owe them for what they have given me 😏. BilletHead

John, How many times have you sat and fished out of a fishing type kayak? A stable fishing kayak you can stand in? I know blah, blah, blah some of you think you don't need to or want to stand once and awhile. Our kayaks have a low seat, high seat and we can stand in them if we want to. I am not going to run white water in them though! As far as loading and unloading. Don't carry them on top of a car but have no problem getting into the bed of my pickup or on bed top homemade racks. We don't overnight float so bash our rigs for that. Guys backpack for weeks in the mountains and I know for a fact I can get that much stuff in them for that. I know you river floaters take wall tents and better comforts and for sure a kayak will not work, BilletHead

Another thing to share from today, Grilled walleye po' boy sandwich. Wanted grilled instead of fried fish for this sammich. I olive oiled a couple pairs of walleye fillets then dusted them with creole seasoning. Put in grilling basket as Pat made tangy coleslaw and remoulade sauce. The hoagie buns were toasted and po' boy assembled. We looked at tomatoes at the market but pale and I am sure tasteless so tomatoes would not be disgracing this sandwich. A few chips on the side and it was game on, Enough for a second round and I think it will be breakfast tomorrow morning! BilletHead

First of all you all and your avocados was a hit here. I had had some in the past with a neutral feeling. Well last week we got a couple and tried them just on a plate with salt and pepper. Not too shabby! Again this morning on Rye toast. Pat put some tajun seasoning on hers and I some sea salt and fresh ground pepper out of our mill. I am now a fan so well done fellows, Second thing. Just a few days ago I posted of making key lime crinkle cookies but no key limes in season or available we subbed Persian limes. It was very good but still wanted to try key lime. Well I guess season hit because our local Walmart had them. So like we really need them another batch was made with key limes. Our novice pallets could not tell any difference so use what you want. Another good batch for snacking. They really go good with a hot cup of coffee, And finally third thing in this post. Last week our friend Brad came down to hunt geese with me. He thinks he needs to bring food. Good grief no man I say but this time three large steaks. We had them one evening , Brad seared them in a screaming hot cast iron skillet outside. Steaks done just right and he polished his off and the Mrs. and I ate half our ours giving us leftovers. I thinly sliced the steak and did a quick heat up in a skillet smeared with a bit of goose fat. Piled on rye bread with some sharp cheddar cheese. Fine leftovers , BilletHead

Seth I have only done it once. You may have just been a sprout back then. It was the first year it was opened back up on Truman. Caught a bunch. I am close to the upper end of the Osage arm which includes the Sac River and the bates County drainage ditch (Marais Des Cygnes). The fish are here in mass and so are snaggers after them. You can get them all the way to Kansas depending on water coming down the arms. I know it is a bit of a drive for you but you should do some exploring out this way. BilletHead

I second a great boat. Did not have the pleasure of fishing out of it but did float by it on the river . I sure hope @Big_Jake has another ride for his fishing now! BilletHead

You crack me up man! BilletHead

@duckydoty, Totally Awesome Duane! I had no doubt when Pat and I were down there and you told us what you were doing that success was not far off. Another talent added to the ducky resume. I need to look around. There is a burl that you probably need. Well done friend, Marty

Good question Ryan, Like others in their response to your request whatever I am catching at the time I am fishing. I do have an affinity for pursuing cutthroat trout in their native ranges. I sometimes catch grief from some on here because of the way I feel about natives. The wife and I have been blessed with getting to try for two weeks the past few summers. It is the quest, the hunt, doing it on our own and finally the catching. Just started with the four natives in Wyoming. This snowballed to two native cuts in Montana plus grayling, redband rainbow and the bonus bull trout. The four cuts of Utah, then the three in Colorado. Bonus Gila in New Mexico and Apache in Arizona. Have two to three more native cutts we would like to do before we cannot do it anymore. I applaud the removal of non natives and restoration of native fish in their ranges. Man can screw up so much but he can sometimes repair what he has done. Do I like to catch stocked trout? Yes but there is NOTHING to compare catching trout where they belong. Saltwater I have only caught redfish, sea trout and one lone flounder. The redfish would be my favorite now but hope to catch other species someday and pick a new favorite. BilletHead

Trolling motor in river Jon boat
BilletHead replied to Jdecoudres's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Good question and I will be watching for answers. I run 12V and have my battery up front. 60/40 jet also but my boat is real heavy and like you I want to ride high. I think @snagged in outlet 3 runs 24V with same motor but lighter hull than mine. Lets see if we can get him to help you, BilletHead -

White Bass run is fake news! Fake I tell ya! BilletHead

Could happen but it has to be when the mysterious white bass run is ready not when you are ready . Got three perfect no hit breast halves with enough fat skin to completely cover meat ! That is all I kept from this season. The rest of my Speckins goose got gifted to you and Brad............. BilletHead

Jeff I second what @rps said. Old school here too. I use my everyday clip carry knife. Keep it surgically sharp. Bummer you cannot get Fiskars scissors. I got mine at wally world. I have two small pair from fabric department on my fly tying table. BilletHead
