Thanks for the report lmtout. Hopefully one of these days I can duplicate your success. WM
-
Um, I don't think lmtout is a guide. He's just a dude that fished with his wife for a couple of days and tore it up. This thread was started by Bob Bennet who is a guide and backs up his reports with actual photos of fish that were caught by his clients on the day that he reported about. I've chatted with Bob at the Hartley ramp before, I have no reason to believe he is anything but a stand up guy. I don't know lmtout, but I do know lundone who saw lmtout catching many walleye. So, in my mind his report is completely credible. WM

Trolling, what type of line is everyone using?
Walleyedmike replied to LoweSTX175's topic in Stockton Lake
For trolling crank baits, I generally use 18lb lead core line (Cabelas brand) with a flourocarbon leader. I attach the leader to the lead core line with a back to back uni-knot. I just use a snap to attach the crank bait. I give my cranks a quick test in the water to make sure they're in tune before I let them out. Watch the vibration on the rod tip, any changes and reel the crank in because it probably has junk on it. I don't remember having any problems with line twist. When I replace my lead core line, I'm going to try the sufix 832 advanced lead core line. I also use a metered braid on my bouncing rods, so I can drop it back in the zone real quick. I have also been experimenting with a trolling weight made by offshore tackle called a tadpole, targeting suspended fish with different presentations. I use line counter reels with Sufix metered braid for that, but I can't remember what pound it is. I bought it on sale at bass pro several years ago. All should read RPS's trolling article. Most of what I konw about trolling I have learned from his articles and posts along with time on the water with powerdive and three or four other Stockton walleye fishermen that unfortunately don't frequent this forum. Masters is off of Hwy 32 south and east of Stockton the road you turn off on is marked with a sign for Masters campground. I thiink it's RA road maybe? Both sides of the mile long bridge on Hwy 215 is worth trying as well. I think there is a fishing dock at Crabtree Cove as well?? Good luck! WM

Sad news. Jim and I share a love for Stockton Lake, and the advice he has PM'd to me will be forever appreciated. It is printed and stored in my boat. I'll think of him each time I refer to his knowledge that he shared with me. I'm seriously bummed about this, I would have loved to have a chance to meet him. Prayers to his family. WM

Wow, how sad. Jim will be missed here and I'm sure so much more so by his family. Sadly, I never got to meet him. He sent me a PM with some unsolicited advice on spots for summer walleye a couple of weeks ago. I printed it off to keep in my boat, so I'll be thinking of him for years to come as I utilize his information each summer. Thanks Jim. Prayers to your family. WM

Your just spoiled from fishing Lake Erie! LOL WM
-
It's you! LOL I catch a ton of dinky bass trolling cranks in the summer. They are such a nuisance. I think I need to start using much larger crank baits come July or so. WM

Wow! You guys hammered 'em! Way to go! WM

I promised pics, here's one that I caught and released on the 2nd, and a short double from June 2nd as well. WM

I have a few Flicker Minnows Fly_Guy haven't developed much confidence in them yet, and keep forgetting to write down the dive curve on them so I lose them all the time. Just one of the many ignorant things I do! Kdub, I buy the flicker shads at Cabelas for $3.99 regular price. I think that's pretty reasonable on a bait that catches fish. I lost nine of them one day though, and that kind of hurt. That makes me laugh lmt out, I struggle catching walleye when it gets hot! I'm kind of a one trick pony, I troll. I read about guys catching limits on a jig and crawler in the summer, and I have no idea where to even start other than dropping a jig where I just caught one trolling. Get after 'em guys. Hopefully I will be back at Stockton in a few weeks, some reports would be great in the mean time! WM

Fished for an hour and a half this morning before we headed for home. Trolled flicker shads and picked up four walleye with two keepers and several nice crappie. All were released to fight again. Had a fun morning and a good trip. Fishing reports just suck with no pics, I'll try to pull a couple from my phone tomorrow. Gotta shout out to Sugarfoot Barbeque in Osceola, ate there Saturday night and the Mexican restraunt in downtown El Dorado Springs (El Dorado Cantina??), had lunch there today on the way home. Great food at both places, highly recommended by walleyedmike! Boobie, those locations I gave you didn't produce much for me this trip, either. Sorry I lead you astray, the lake changes a lot in a couple of weeks. Glad you found a few! Kdub, Flicker shads are a great trolling bait I usually try them first every time. My favorite colors are purple tiger and chartruse pearle (i think??) size 7. I also use jointed walley divers and occasionally shad raps. WM

Was fortunate enought to spend a bit of time in the afternoon of May 31 and June 1 fishing for some walleye at Stockton Lake. Caught a mixed bag including 20 or so walleye, however only four keepers. Trolling crank baits was by far the most productive method. I was using lead core line, but it really isn't necessary as most were caught in 15' or less water. Gonna spend a couple of hours of C&R fishing tomorrow morning before I head home. WM

Smithvillesteve here's a link to the mustad website http://www.mustad.no/www2010/products/product-news/a-perspective-on-perfection I snell the slow death hook to a 3' or so leader with a bead and a swivel. Use quality swivels to make sure it spins. It's fished on a bouncer at 1-1.5 mph. They should produce on Smithville as well! Boobie, I was midlake area. Hope you put your son on some 'eyes! WM

Sorry for the late report. The wife and I made a quick trip to Stockton last weekend, fished for five hours or so Saturday. Bounced slow death rigs in 20-25' of water on a main lake point and found a few walleye. Kept four 'eyes that were 16"-18.5" and a crappie, but caught seven keeper walleye. Was a great day on the water, looking forward to the next trip! WM

No, Roark is what I would consider the southern area of the lake near the twin bridges. The RB ramp is on the east edge of the the town of Stockton, east of the grocery store on RB Road. It's a really nice ramp, but very busy when the ski boats start hitting the lake. WM

It's been a couple of years, but I have stayed at Owl Haven and Orleans Trail. Both were acceptable. There are also duplexes at Stockton State park which are very nice, (stayed there several years ago) and some little log cabins in the State Park camp grounds which are cheaper. You have to use the campground bath houses and I don't think they have kitchens, but they look nice if your just looking for a place to sleep. I would kind of prefer the Stockton State park area as you have ramps at the state park and Hartley. Both good ramps on the big and Little Sac arms within a mile of each other as the wind on Stockton can make one arm preferrable to the other. Best of luck! WM

Your plan sounds solid. They seem kind of scattered, so I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time jigging before I moved on. The few that I caught Saturday were in 15' of water on pea gravel. WM

Great idea BilletHead! I just got done dicing up 36 cups of green peppers that were packed in freezer bags. I need to can some jalapenos, but will be smoking some now as well. I didn't plant any chili peppers but I know where I can get some. Was wondering, though how long did you smoke yours? Just looking for a starting point. Thanks! WM
