This got me thinking about John Prine and others that were noteable in the Blue Grass/ folk style that I love.
What about St.Louis’s own John Hartford, who wrote what I consider one of the greatest songs of all time...Gentle on my mind.
He was a graduate of one of the most prestigious private high schools in St. Louis, John Burrows school. His music and style seemed to be a huge contrast from that.
Another favorite song of mine is City of New Orleans, which describes the slow death of railroads. Written by Steve Goodman, who died of cancer at a young age.
Woody Guthrie was the best of the folk genre in my opinion.
My my list of favorite song writers across the board...not necessarily in order or greatness, although Hank IS my number 1.
1. Hank Williams
2. Bob Dylan
3. Woodie Guthrie
4. Carol King
5. Paul Simon
6. Willie Nelson
who are your favorites?
