You hit the nail on the head, watching and listening will get you a lot of fish. After years of river fishing you can tell the difference in splash sounds between a turtle coming off a log, a gar coming to the top and rolling over, or a bass trying to nail baitfish, without even looking up.

My lame theory on WTD baits and the time of year when they are effective, is as follws. Earlier in the spring, around the spawn, they are guarding their nest and would hate to have a bait just sitting there with no forward movement, if a fast moving gliding type WTD like a Sammy comes by, they just let it be, because it's out of the strike zone too fast. But a popper chugger really annoys them and they will more than likely hit it. As the year progresses they move along to the faster baits and love to chase, and probably a fast moving/gliding WTD, or a buzzbait might be the best answer closer to the fall.

Granted, He was using those 1/15 oz ZMan heads with no weed guard. I always like heavy jig heads in the current. Not a "slow fall" kind of fisherman. I don't like the feeling of losing contact. In reality, there's no need to with the type of baits that I use. Just personal preference.

If you mostly fish lakes like Table Rock, they would be a must for me. Since I mostly fish rivers, I'm pitching in heavy cover and they would get hung up too often. I gave some to my brother the other day on the Meramec, his comment was they get hung up on every cast.... He lost all of them in 30 minutes. I believe Dave used to carry 30 pounds of grubs in his boat.....are they for sale?
