stlfisher Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I grew up fishing BW as a kid. When your stuck in the St. Charles/St. Peters area it was a great place to go that was close to home. I actually caught my largest bass ever there.....8 pounds 1 ounce. Not bad for urban fishing. It is a great place to fish for carp on the fly rod. As I got older, I started playing on the Big Rivers a little more. Howell Island was a great place to run some jug and limb lines. When the water comes up and gets in the trees, those 50 and 60 pound flat head and blues are alot of fun trying to wrestle up out of the water in a canoe! The white bass/hybrids would make a good runn up in there in the spring also. Not to mention a good place to catch spoonbill and big head carp. I just wish they did not make it to where you could not drive over the low water bridge. That made it a little harder to get all your gear down there. 8lb's is great bass...especially at Busch. I have caught one that weighed 5lb's out there, but no bigger. There are still lot's of carp and some giant grass carp at Busch. I may need to try that this year.

I pulled several 5 pounders out of the pond by the rifle range over the years. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
fishgypsy Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Not to completely hijack the thread, but what's the legality of fishing some of those subdivision ponds in the O'Fallon area, provided you're not a resident? I know some of them hold big hybrid sunfish, which seem like they'd be a ton of fun on light tackle this spring... Gavin Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Its probably tresspassing....but who's gonna know?
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I've been kicked out of most ponds in the St.Charles county area. Sometimes nobody says a word and you can fish for a while. Maybe a couple days. Other times they are on you right away. I've never been threatened with calling the law, most people just want you out. I had a sweet little spot that was giving up nice fish until one day I pull in and there is a new "residents only" sign. I gave it whirl anyway figuring that if I looked like I belonged there, nobody would call me out. Wrong!!!! 2 casts and this old guy comes running. I even tried lying. I said I lived up in the other cul de sac and he said, oh yeah which house? I laughed it off and left. He yelled at me to never come back. I figure he had been watching me and was just waiting for the new sign to get put up. SIO3

BTW don't try and do that stuff down in my neck of the woods... there are NO ponds down here, NONE.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Pat I'll leave south county to you and Sherwood. How about Creve Coeur Lake? I've taken my pond prowler out there twice and didn't catch squat. I've lived near it all my life and heard "stories", but that's it, "stories" BTW I was bass fishing. SIO3, coming to a subdivision pond near you and there are no fish at Busch.
patfish Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I have no problems with bass fishing SIO3. Sherwood has all the ponds he can handle in his "gated community". I'm stuck with the SoCo subdivision ponds and one little county park jewel.... Here's one from MY subdivision pond a few years back.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Man that's a nice one Pat!! Sherwood's got it made. Snagged Coming to a subdivision near you soon.
