jdmidwest
How long ago was it that someone thought DDT was a great idea? Snow geese, wild turkeys, Bald eagles, all almost disappeared completely. Thankfully some econuts stepped up and educated the powers that be on the truth. Now look, we have seasons for turkey and snow geese. bald eagles are easy to find. We can learn and not everything we've done in the past, including policies and procedures have been well thought out. DDT affected the snow goose and the turkey??? If memory serves me right, it was birds of prey and scavengers that eat carrion or fish and the DDT buildup weakened the egg shells. Turkeys and snow geese are herbivores for the most part. The snow goose rebound has been wonderful, in order to control the population that is exploding and wrecking the habitat of other good waterfowl, we have extended seasons and liberal bag limits on them trying to kill them off. But, they really don't have much food value and most don't bother to hunt them. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Stoneroller
rigghhhhhtttt, because DDT was only sprayed on carrion and fish. it was never used on plants. and when it was used, it was sprayed in a very controlled and limited manner... Gatorjet
Maybe MDC released the Mountain Lion to help with the deer overpopulation in West county. They've had so many other bone head ideas that it almost sounds plausible! Real men go propless!

Was it a matter of the organic material DDT was directly spayed on and then consumed by these birds or was it a matter of bio- accumulation? I have never heard of any lower level primary consumer being adversely effected by the use of DDT, only higher level consumers who would build up large quantities of the chemical in their tissue due to bio-accumulation. I can find no published article on the internet that names DDT as cause of population declines in wild turkey or snow goose populations. It would be pretty interesting if there was a study out there that showed DDT was having adverse effects on animals that occupied lower trophic levels. Interesting and scary. There are some that spout stuff that they do not know anything about. DDT never affected the Turkeys or Snow Geese. Lead shot killed off the snow geese and man killed off the turkeys because they taste good. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S.
