Members Stephen Hall Posted July 23, 2011 Members Posted July 23, 2011 "E. coli is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms (endotherms)"- Wiki Link to the role of animals in E. Coli: http://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/pbs/zoonoses/O157DT104/O157DT104index.html Deer, Pigs, Dogs, Horses... I'm not defending the obviously antiquated septic systems along the lake but, all I know is I see a dozen deer on any given morning as I drive the dirt road out of my cove. Besides weekends, that's 2 deer for every one person residing. I only see the deer on the road, I probably pass 50 others. Ever taken the side roads off 5? There are hundreds of pigs, cows and horses and most everyone has at least 1 dog. Do you pick up your dog poop every time he runs off in the grass down by the lake? Hmmmm? I cant find out much about E coli in fish poop but one study by the U of Houston showed none to close to zero E coli in Fish poop. Regardless, where do you think those 4-6 lb bass poop? Yes, there is poop in LOTO... I'm going swimming now. This is my signature, there are many like it, but this one is mine. http://urlmd.com
fishinwrench Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Whoa there FishinWrench! Show me. Show me a person that has got sick. Don't just be a dramma queen yappin on the internet talkin smack. I live here, never have had a problem from the water, nor have I ever talked with anyone who has. I know several neighborhood kids that swim all the time in the cove that also have never gotten sick. If this lake is so poluted why is fishing so good here? You go to tablerock for a tournament have fun not catching fish. This lake if you don't have 19 or 20lbs dont even bother weighing in. I won a tournament a couple days ago where we had almost 19lb. Second place was just a few ounces behind that, and thrid place was just a little under that. AND THIS WAS A 3 1/2 HOUR TOURNAMENT!! Have fun maybe catching 15lbs everywhere else. I'm going to go catch some more fish right now! Have fun playing on the computer. I'll post another picture. Woah Fishinwrench? Hu? Do you mean "Woah Fishinwrench, please don't say that out loud"?.....or do you mean "Woah Fishinwrench, you are wrong" ? Jackie boy, fish are among the last critter to suffer from ecoli and pharmacuetically polluted water. Where are the frogs ? Where are the dragonflys and damselflys ? Your position of: the fishing is ok so the water quality must be fine... could use some education. And Im not sure that I consider you worth the time and effort to educate. People that truly think like you do are the reason why it will only continue to get worse. If you truly CARE about, and LOVE this lake and the environment you should take initiative to open your eyes and look a little closer. Just because YOU can't catch a decent mess of fish outside of your own back yard doesn't mean diddly about the water quality anywhere. Did you really tell me to" have fun playing on the computer" ? Really, Hotshot tourney winner ? Wanna put your money where your mouth is? Cuz you didn't get mine that Tuesday evening....or anyone elses the following week. Have you even drawn a check since? Catching a decent limit in 3 hrs. around PB2 the Tuesday after a Sunday C&R event really isn't much to brag about, dude.
Smalliebigs Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 "Catching a decent limit in 3 hrs. around PB2 the Tuesday after a Sunday C&R event really isn't much to brag about" Totally agreed Wrench, I have friends that consistently fish around PB2 and think they are Bill Dance, little do they know we laugh at them behind their back. I guess guys will do whatever it takes to bring home a check or some self proclaimed glory????
FishinCricket Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Dang, laughing at a "friend" behind their back? Harsh, dude.. (I only do that to TroutCommander, I laugh in the face of the rest of em.. lol) Woah Fishinwrench? Hu? One things for sure someone needs an brief education in basic science and maybe just a short tutorial on politics... cricket.c21.com
Kayser Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 He's actually right- compared to invertebrates and amphibians, fish are pretty resistant to merely e. coli and pharmaceuticals. Most of the fish kills you hear of due to "poo in the water" have to do with a biomass overload and oxygen depletion by bacteria, or a mass of toxic chemicals dumped in (like agent orange or something). Now, that's not to say some of the pharms won't cause hermaphroditic fish; check this out- http://news.discovery.com/animals/more-hermaphrodite-fish-in-us.html The fish are still healthy in size and number, just "gender confused." (I'm gonna blame artificial estrogens here- water soluble and not degraded by the body, merely expelled, meaning those shotty septic systems throw them right into the lake!) Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.

Rob Now there's a better example of someone who could be a respected guide and tournament fisherman. Rob wasn't force fed that info, he likely researched it himself because he truly cares.
Outside Bend Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 He's actually right- compared to invertebrates and amphibians, fish are pretty resistant to merely e. coli and pharmaceuticals While kind of true, e.coli can only really persist in streams and lakes that are warm and nutrient-rich, places you won't find pollution sensitive fish species in the first place. <{{{><

I find that quite flattering- I was considering being a fishing guide for a while, but at the same time have never entered a tournament (no interest in the entry fee and running to and from the weigh-in site- waste of fishing time). I'm actually a Biology major at MST (formerly University of Missouri- Rolla), with minors in both Chemistry and Material Sciences, and slight emphasis in Environmental Science an Ecology- trying to be well rounded in the field so as to not be narrow-sighted. Graduation is set for December, so I'm just looking for a decent regenerative medicine/tissue engineering graduate program right now. Fishing, however, remains the primary obsession. Rob WARNING!! Guest csfishinfool Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 The DNR has a five year study monitoring ecoli for Lake of the Ozarks. It has some great information on it. http://dnr.mo.gov/loz/index.html
