ness Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Maybe...no one will know if having a gun would have helped the situation. Although...if someone is shooting back at an attacker...I can see how this might slow him down a bit or even put him down before he had a chance to kill 33. Look at the facts of the case before jumping to any conclusions....you will find plenty of opportunities where an armed person could have took advantage of and ended the whole ordeal. ya...didn't catch any humor. Yeah, no doubt if an armed campus policemen had been right there it would have helped. But you kinda see my point, right? I notice suicide and accident up on the list, way ahead of homicide. I don't know how many of those were with guns, but surely some were. If a gun is a little less handy, might there be a few less of those? Accidents happen with children and guns with some regularity -- adults too. People kill themselves by all kinda means, but if there's a loaded gun sitting right there when you reach your wits end... I'm not demonizing guns or people who carry them, especially you because you seem like a pretty reasonable guy (though somewhat lacking in sense of humor ). But I think the presense of a gun in the heat of the moment and/or in the wrong hands can turn disasterous. Not so sure our CC laws can weed out 'the wrong hands', though I know they try. I'm sure lives have been lost because a gun was present in the heat of the moment. So I keep 'em unloaded and locked up. And I respect your right to do it your way. John
ollie Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I will pack heat and I don't care what anyone else thinks!! Been on the wrong end of that before and I won't let that happen again! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!

And astounding odds indicate that it never will, regardless. But if it brings you peace of mind that's cool...... just keep you mind about the piece. (Piece/Peace)

And that's what it really comes down to right? It is a right, an unalienable right to protect yourself and your family by the means you choose. I appreciate the dialog. I wasn't really expecting to change you mind or anything. Caring a gun was not something I jumped into...I researched the subject for over a year before pulling the trigger..excuse the pun. Flyflinger Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I have to plead the 5th on that one. Don't wanna get a ticket in the mail. I ware mine every time I get in the car...I also carry mine in my waste band. There is no limit to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit
Trout Commander Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Here's how you handle a situation like rounding a bend on a float trip and encountering someone that you feel has intentions of doing you harm. You just say "yo dude, Heads Up. what's with all the lawdogs upstream?" He/they say " WTF are you talkin' about", Then you say " F#@k I dunno, but I'm packin' a bag o weed so I need to get on downstream, later". Yeah and then your new best friend will paddle along right beside you for the rest of the trip and try to smoke up all of your weed. Forget that. When I carry on rivers I open carry. The AR15 slung across my back is an equalizer in just being there. If you keep the magazine full and the chamber empty it's plenty safe around the kids. My five year old doesn't have the manual dexterity to engage the charging handle and the 4 month old's drool won't have any ill effects on the weapons effectiveness as long as I leave the optic covers on. The only real downfall is it's uncomfortable when you sit down and lean back and there is a learning curve for casting (especially double hauls) with it on your back. [sarcasm/] I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack

ness Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 So Professor Safety. What precautions do you take when firing an illegal cannon in a national forest? I let ColdWaterShtr fire it a bunch of times first. John
ColdWaterFshr Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I'll answer that. It was my cannon and not Ness's. I made sure the safety was "on" as we loaded the potato. Only fresh Aqua Net was used, and we followed the manufacturers guidelines. This was pressure rated PVC pipe, rated at 48,000 psi. All spectators were wearing kevlar vests and sound proof earphones and safety glasses (except the dog). No one had drank more than 4 consecutive beers in less than 1 hour prior to discharging the cannon.
ColdWaterFshr Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Furthermore, we cleared all fauna including mountain lions downrange and carefully cordoned off a 1/4 mile target field.
