jdmidwest Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 But when someone makes a statement that states, "Gigging Sucks", you essentially condemn all giggers, the legal ones and the POACHERS. No method of taking game is really more effective in the hands of an experienced individual. Gigging is not a method of mass destruction. A POACHER that is using his method to take game is doing so illegally, no matter what the method. As I have stated in the past, Don't condemn a sporting method just because some POACHERS are abusing it. Target the poachers and eliminate them. Stoneroller Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 except actually fishing for a fish allows the fish themselves to decide if and which one is going to attempt to consume your lure/bait. there is a certain random factor to the the fact that even a bait fisherman doesn't catch the biggest fish everytime/anytime. Gigging/spearfishing (frankly they are the same thing I don't know why MDC allows one and not the other) removes the random factor and allows the 'fisherman' <barf> to select the fish he is going to harvest. Typically the largest fish. also note that even though some fish that are actually hooked do die from the hook or from handling, at least they can be unhooked and released. JD, You are right we need to target the poachers and enforce the laws the way they were intended. You are wrong that gigging in and of itself is not a weapon of mass destruction. ozark trout fisher Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Good thread ! Let's begin a list of all the Genuinely Stupid Things... 1. Legal Marriage 2. CCW permits 3. Seat belt laws 4. DWI checkpoints 5. Deer checking stations 6. House cats 7. Sales tax on used cars 8. Belief in ghosts and demons 9. Flying clorox bottles 10. Non-Smoking fishing cabins 11. Cross-cut rabbit strips 12. Beer named after flyfishing jargon 13. House plants names with 4 or more syllables 14. Mail-in rebates 15. The term "gray area" Beef jerky time! I agree with you most of the way....But I do like cats. To the point, I don't like gigging, but I don't have any major problems with those who do it ethically and do not harm game fish. That said, the unusual level of difficulty of enforcement (since it's a night-time sport) does make this a touchy issue. Still, despite my personal feelings against it, I'd have to think long and hard though before I'd support a ban. I think better enforcement practices would be a better first step, as well as regulating the kind of lights that can be used. If that doesn't significantly bring down the number of game fish being gigged, then, and only then would I think it time to consider an all out ban. The backlash of such a ban would be too great for the MDC to take on unless there was really no other way to mitigate the problem. This is especially true in a time when their funding could be on the line every year due to proposals from ignorant/uncaring legislators. Public opinion is more important now than ever, and these are all considerations that the MDC is going to have to take into account. I just wish it weren't so complicated.
fishinwrench Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I agree with you most of the way....But I do like cats. Well I've got some disturbing news, and I really hate to be the one breaking it to you... Your cat secretly hates your guts, and probably sticks its paw in your coffee mug after a trip to the litter box.
Trout Commander Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 12. Beer named after flyfishing jargon Blasphemy! I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
