Dee Rought! Dryness Is Upon Us.

It is officially dry here. Another month is slipping by without any significant rainfall. I recorded one rain a few weeks back of 1 1/4 in. Monday, I had 2 tenths and watered the garden the next day.

Streams are trickling down to nothing. Ponds are losing water fast.

The upside may be a good fish spawn this year, bass and goggle eye in streams have had a good year to raise on beds without any scouring floods to wash away the spawn.

My yard crunches as I walk across it. Squirrels have raided my June strawberries for a water source. I water my garden every other day to keep the moisture content up, I have been doing it almost ever since I planted it. Hay crops are thin and when the fields are cut, they turn brown. A second hay crop will probably not happen this year.

funny JD, I was thinking of the lakes which the lack of rains have kept the water out of the bushes so the spawns might not be so good this year. Another Mother Nature wonder.

I think it is going to be a very rough summer on both fish and fisherman, unless something changes. We keep getting rain in the forecast, but nothing or very little ever seems to come of it. The streams in my part of the state aren't quite as low as you describe, but they do need rain. The temperatures the next several days are supposed to be near 100.

And it's only May. I don't want to think too hard on where we'll be come July and August.

What's strange about it though is my sister-in-law/brother-in-law have a pond and a small lake behind their house and it was super low all fall and winter, and now it's coming out of it's banks just about. They live in Columbia and I don't think they've had much more rain than the rest of the area...

We got a heck of a rainstorm here tonight. Really enjoed watching it for the 10 minutes it lasted. Everything got a good soaking. I hope we get more tomorrow.

I planted some grass seed and fertilized the yard around the first of May, they were calling for good rains the next few days. They went to the north and south, I had to water the grass because the fertilize was burning the existing grass.

I came down out of the hills near Fredricktown yesterday in the windstorm and the lowlands around Cape Girardeau were covered in a dust storm kicked up from croplands. We had a strong south wind all day yesterday. Record heat this weekend.

Yep, not mowing my grass as often and the tiny areas missed by my sprinkler system arc are getting that dull green look. According to Weatherman Dave Murray ( you may or may not believe him) June is going to be the hottest month this whole year. Even hotter than July and August! hard for me to believe but we are almost to the mid 90's already.

Dave is right on his seasonal forecasts about half the time. Not bad for a weatherman I guess. He said last winter was going to be really cold and snowy. Oops.

I never usually have to water my garden in May, but I'm out there every other day now, watering. They're "forecasting" a chance of rain next week, I hope we get some, well more than some, a lot would be nice.
