Indian Point Area Today

After a warm day yesterday and a 50 degree night, I had my crew, Friends of Brent Frazee of the KC Star meet me at 6:30 hoping for a topwater bite. Even at that hour there was not a cloud in the sky and the surface water was still as a church house mouse and covered with pollen. While waiting, I caught a total thumper K behind Rock Lane's dock on a fin. It just slurpped it down by the back hook.

Mike and Gary fished a grub most of the day in smoke red. If I got my boat under 35 we were unsecessfiu. Had to keep it out. Down baits in the dam area right now are struggling. Unless you can keep them out the moss deep. Moss is out to 25' in most locations. Ended the morning with 31 total and that includes about 10 gogs. Had a solid 10 keeper bass most being really nice Post Spawn K's with 3 nice Jaws in the mix. KC to Long Creek K's are just a different fish than the White River K's above Shell Knob. Lots bigger and thicker.

We were fishing powerline and on several casts when Mike set the hook on the K's, I could see him turn their bellies up. Probably about 20' deep and 30' from the boat. Just unbelieveable clear. Easy to see the bottom in the point 5 area in 30' of water. Had lots of fish swimming together following the hooked fish.

Got really tough for us about Noon and only caught 2 more from then till 1:30. I had 6 pretty nice fish throwing the tube out into 35 plus feet on the lake side of the boat while the boys swam the grubs on the shore side. Seems to be a no moss line and have heard some of the Big Cedar guides are dragging a french fry in 35 to 45 ft. and catching really big Post Spawn K's. My guys were not draggers they were casters, so we went with the grub, which is always in good taste.

As always, good report bill!:-)........I was grumbling at the thought of a drag bite......glad we didn't need it. That's a tough one for me to stick with.:-(

Yes thanks for the report Bill. Funny how the spots near the dam run bigger on average than the ones in the White. The spots in the White are fat healthy fish, you'd think there would be lots of bigger 2-3 lb. spots up there.

Seems like most of the fish run bigger from about the area around Pt 9, back to Long Creek. Includes a mile or two of the White and James, roughly. Can only imagine it has to do with the bigger and deeper water, more places to hide and get fat. At least that is what I have found, after becoming sort of a mid lake to dam guy, vs. fishing only the rivers when I started coming down years ago.

In my humble opinion, 5" best in most situations, 4" for super finesse ones (flat water, bluebird skies or closer "match the hatch"), and different manufactures 4 or 5" baits are not the same, for instance Kalins are somewhat bulkier body. Use what you have confidence in and Good Luck.

I bought Kalins. I usually use the Kanimi in shad pattern. I hate cutting grubs short. In my mind it won't work as well. If i don't have luck with 5 inch i will shorten it and see.

The 5 inch will work just fine, Sore Thumbs. Whether a Kalin or Yamamoto, the grub is only 5 inches if you grab both ends and pull it completely straight. Stick it on a darter head, hurl it out there and get to catchin em.
