Seems it wasn't just "birds" (as you allude) electrocuted, it was 232 eagles in a 6 county area in 3 years.

But I agree with your premise of fairness. No one should be above the law.

That said, electric transmission has been around a long time, killing birds since the first domumented case on a telegraph line in 1876. There have been preventative methods available for years, and the lone example chose to ignore them. That's hardly comparable to a new industry that's still learning the ropes.

If the politics were stripped from the matter and it was a simple question of how do we keep from unneccesarily killing our critters, there'd be no USNews article, no thread, and no discussion. That's the really sad part of the matter.

Not really. That was in a worse case scenario where there would be several days in a row. I don't think a solar power system for residential would be practical without a battery pack and an automatic transfer switch to kick in an AC charger.

Wayne anytime you make penetration points in a roof its a leak looking to happen.

I understand that and wouldn't disagree. There is no reason though that a support system couldn't be engineered to run through the overhang or a deck/patio cover. I don't think anyone knows where the cells can go either. If research could bring higher outputs from smaller physical cells it might not take all that much room.

The reasoning behind my faith in the future of residential, and even a lot of commercial, is the fact the loads are so predictable and easy for the power companies predict when they might see increased demands.

Na Wayne, even on overhangs damage can occur. Not to mention warranty issues on shingles etc etc etc. Its best to keep things off houses. Those units are heavy and snow load can cause damage as well. I know what your talking about and like I said do it on a out structure designed just for them. You could actually put the Battery system in it for transfer to the house keeping all power away from the house incase of an accident.

Like I pointed out though there are things people can do right now that will decrease the usage. Cost on some of it is more than many can afford and then the other stuff people are lazy and wont do it. To be honest I see more ( Demand ) caused by all these new sub-division during the summer months because the bone brains cut down all the trees to build the houses. Those old mature tall trees shade would have shaded the houses had they been left and reduced cooling bills.

F&F, I watched Tom Silva install some panels on a house a few months ago. I guarantee you the roof doesn't leak. If you have a contractor who isn't a mouthbreather, there won't be a problem. You can't disregard a technology because there are idiots installing it who don't know how to use flashing.

The Republic Monitor currently is running a story about a developer who is planning a 58 lot solar energy subdivision in Billings MO. They also ran a story in January about a guy and his wife who have a solar house near Republic who pretty well debunks all the BS coming from the right wing wack jobs who are owned by the oil companies. He not only heats and air conditions his house he also charges his electric car with the solar power. I believe his name is Jim Davis. When or if I find the story on their web page I'll post it here. My question about wind power slaughtering all the birds is this. Why do we still have birds? Any one my age can remember windmills on farms when we were kids and I don't remember seeing dead birds under my Dad's cousin's windmill on his farm.

What was the total cost for the solar power installation? If you're willing to spend enough money, then you can probably power your house and charge your electric car with solar power. I've thought about installing solar panels on my house, but the payback doesn't work out.
