Blazerman Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Never seen a badger but if you have ever had a fox den nearby while they are raising a bunch of young ones you would be amazed at how efficient they are at killing everything they can get hold of. I am not sure that is why he killed them but it would be a good guess. We had one on a golf course where I worked once and I was amazed at what they killed and brought back to their den. Rabbits fur and squirrels tails where everywhere at first but soon they moved onto everything else around the course including chickens and a rooster and at least one cat. One neighbor came by looking for his small lamb and we found the pelt from it too. One morning I watched them pick off about four baby guess which was amazing. The pair of foxes kept circling the two geese with babies and every time one of the geese would run at one of the foxes the other one would dash in a grab a baby and shake it real quick I guess to snap it’s neck. The other goose would then run at the fox with the baby in its mouth and he would drop it and run. Eventually the geese with the few babies left managed to make it to a pond and the foxes went back and grabbed all their kill and headed to their den.
Mitch f Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Suburbia rules! Not too far from the country Not too far from the city Not socially retarded Not metro sexual Not out of touch Not as much early pregnancy or meth Not as much wrapping cars around trees at 18 yrs Not as much crime or fear of getting car jacked ................ Greasy B Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Suburbia rules! Middle, boring, predictable...... You have that right. As a fellow dweller in the land of plastic houses I might add: No good restaurants, No good music, No good bars, In my particular burbhood we almost no public parks and what little open farm land that remains will inevitably be bulldozed for more plastic houses. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

mic Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 "If everyone lived off the land" there'd be alot fewer of "us".. Like only as many as "the land" could sustain.....which would likely solve every problem that has ever been discussed here, and elsewhere. Yea that's called famine... Everyone knows thats a good thing and leads to man's great accomplishments... War, Death, Disease, Hording. Only good can come from that.
bfishn Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 The last time I was looking for new digs, the rental agent gave me several addresses to visit, but none were acceptable. I returned and tried to clarify my requirements so she'd understand; "Thanks Cathy, but those places just won't do. The place for me will have to pass the Peoff Test". "Ooooh kaaay... what's the Peoff Test?" "I have to be able to take a pee off the front porch or the back deck (preferrably both) without needing to look around to see if I'm being watched. Not that I would do that of course, but it needs to pass that test." "I see. Let me think about that." Next day she called with the perfect address. At least it was for the first 3 years, till 3 new houses popped up in the 'hood. Me thinks it's time to move on... :-) I can't dance like I used to.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 "I have to be able to take a pee off the front porch or the back deck (preferrably both) without needing to look around to see if I'm being watched. Not that I would do that of course, but it needs to pass that test." that's what my wife told every agent we used, well not quite that but, " My husband----etc." I grew up in a town of 5K 2 blocks from a cattle farm and spent most of my time on the farms around and foxes were considered mousers. When I lived in the out back of Laclede county I never lost a chicken to any predators, but they were smart chickens, they knew to come in to the hen house before sundown. I did lose 2 guineas, lavender isn't a good color for them in great horned owl country, my mistake, not the owls. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
jdmidwest Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Oneshot, plant white pines instead of cedar. They grow faster and bigger. Limbs will stay all the way to the ground if you don't prune them. They make excellent privacy and wind breaks. They don't itch when you mow up against them either, long soft needles. I have them planted as a screen around my house where I don't want to see my neighbors. They make good places to pee and snipe on the dogs that stray. They muffle gunshots pretty well too. ozark trout fisher Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I don't know. I don't have any different regard for people that live in the city and those that live in the country. I've done both, and I find that people are pretty much just people. It's quite a small percentage of anyone who truly cares about the environment/natural resources in any way that doesn't benefit them directly, and it's no different between city folk and country people. Urban wastewater has the same effect as too much fertilizer used in a farm field that ends up in a river. People are people and most of them don't care. Unfortunately there's no tidy dividing line between those in rural and urban communities.
oneshot Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 How did I know they was watching? They asked if I was cleaning a Buffalo behind my house, one was the other was a Carp. White Pines the limbs might grow to the ground but because I have so many Big Oaks they will grow too open.I already have many Cedars, just a matter of Transplanting them where I want. As far as not knowing both City and Country.I've lived and worked in Kansas City and Springfield until I went into MCRD at 17.Have spent a great deal of time in Major Cities including Chicago and New York City.Got along with people just fine. Badgers have caught some up by Missouri River. Funny setting here just heard neighbors House Alarm go off. oneshot
