Old plug Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 As far as name use goes it is not a good idea todo anywhere on the Internet. I spent a few years as a member of the CYber Angels (if any of you recall the organization) I have seen all kinds of thing on the Internet and to make a long story short it is really not a good idea to reveal your identity.
Flysmallie Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 I think Jerry just adds a comment sometimes just to sit back and watch the fireworks. Kind of like his friends' state record bass on April fools day. Keep posting Jerry! Exactly, because he can't say he didn't know it was an old tax. Either that or he never took time to read the link he posted. BS either way. Â Â
Al Agnew Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 honestly Al, I didn't really know (I will not address the others who hide behind a handle and won't use their real name). I saw it posted on another fishing site and thought it sounded "fishy". I learned something today. I also have always been an advocate of "luxury" taxes. If it is something that is not a necessity in life and you want to buy it for pleasure purposes, I see no problem at all adding a luxury tax to it. Be it a pleasure boat, golf clubs, hunting rifle, booze, tobacco, etc. This will probably open another can of worms, but thanks for clarifying the topic. Understood. It still seems that somebody had to start that somewhere...somebody with an ax to grind on taxes and the willingness to misrepresent what this tax really is in order to rile people. And then it spreads to different websites and riles up more people, until somebody somewhere finally calls BS on it and sets the record straight...but only for that particular person or website. Meanwhile a whole bunch of people are all up in arms about it, and perhaps a tax that we all probably think is a great idea comes under fire from people who should support it. On a slightly related note...maybe not a total thread hijack...I've been reading a novel the premise of which is how much our thoughts and outlooks are pushed one way or another by the internet. One of the things that came up was called a "filter bubble". Search engines, especially Google, keep track of all your searches and other online moves, and when you search for something, it gives you the websites that it "thinks" you'll be interested in. The example given in the novel was two people who type in "Egypt" into the search engine. For one, who has shown in other searches that they are interested in political affairs, it would bring up all kinds of info on Egyptian politics and the Arab Spring, while for another, who has shown no online interest in politics, it would bring up sightseeing and travel info. But I wonder...take the example of global warming. If somebody has shown that they are mainly interested in political websites that include a lot of global warming "deniers", would the search engine bring up mostly websites critical of global warming, while for somebody with the opposite political bent, would it bring up mostly sites supporting it? Could it be that our political views, whatever they are, are being reinforced by the search engines? I know that filter bubbles exist. Since I've long showed myself to be interested in canoes, yesterday when I was doing a bit of research on the Old Town Appalachian canoe to help answer a question on another thread, I started out on Google by typing in "appalachian canoe", but before I could finish typing the word "appalachian" and long before I started typing in "canoe", the drop down "suggestions" came up with "appalachian canoe". I doubt that somebody with no prior demostrated interest in canoes would have had that come up when the started typing "appalachian". As for using your own name on message boards, I use mine here because even if I didn't, there are enough people on here who know me from other places that they'd almost immediately figure out who I was. And I pretty much trust the people on Ozark Anglers to be "good guys". I'm frequently on a couple of websites where I DON'T use my real name, and a few others where I just go by "Al A". This is the only one where I use my name. I'm not too paranoid about the internet, but I'm usually pretty careful to not post things like exactly when I'm going to be out of town for all to see. Jerry, I have no problem with luxury taxes, either. But I really like the kind of tax this is, a tax on users (well, actually manufacturers but it gets passed on to the users) that is earmarked to go toward the things the users care about. Politicians of all kinds hate earmarked taxes, because they can't take the money and put it wherever they think it's "needed". But most people really like earmarked taxes as long as they go to where they are supposed to go.
Jerry Rapp Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 Al, would you be reading Black List per chance?
Old plug Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 I am not paranoid Al just have had hands on experience. Today however with most law enforcement monitoring the Internet it might be a lot safer than 15 yrs ago.
Al Agnew Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Al, would you be reading Black List per chance? Yep...pretty good book.

I get trail, state university, mountains, trail map... John
Jerry Rapp Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 Yep...pretty good book. It is the first of Thor's books I have read. I am about 1/2 way through it and had just read the Google Egypt part. I really wonder how much of that is based on fact? I read a lot of Patterson and Baldacci. Anyone who loves baseball and were around in the 70's should read Grisham's Calico Joe. Joe was from Calico, Ark(teaser)

I've read some of Thor's books but not all of them, but I've read everything that Flynn wrote.
joeD Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 If you really want to be informed, and, no two ways about it, shocked, just read the results of any states' legislative record. The absolute ignorance, greed, petty grandstanding, and downright cheating and lying is on display for all too see and read. Yet. We do nothing. We accept this behavior as a matter of course. We do nothing. We are not outraged. We get the government we deserve.
