Carrying a gun for protection has alot of responsibility, more than any of the 2 parties involved possessed at that moment on the gravel bar. I carry a gun because there are boneheads like that roaming around all over.

with a bunch of "bad" folks out there with guns, why shouldn't I have one for protection from them?

Feel free. To me though, there's not enough threat out there to make the hassle, training time and expense of carrying a gun, being good with it and keeping it safe all the time to make it worth it. But honestly, to each his own, so long as nobody that doesn't need shooting gets shot.

Two idiot canoers shooting pistols at (turtles) all the way through (my) stretch of river Saturday morn. They had a costly take out point :). Sorry about that but I had to call in the heat. Another gun incident down below river round Saturday afternoon according to warden buddy. They shooting at water to see the effect. Could be a select group of knuckleheads continually acting out. Make it costly for them and they stop? Lets hope.

Good on you for bringing down the heat on them.

Well, since I stay off the popular rivers on summer weekends, I always felt it was highly unlikely that I'd run into anything I'd need a gun for. I don't own a handgun, but plan on buying one fairly soon, not to carry around, but just because I want to own one and shoot it enough to be able to hit something with it. I shot a 9 mm for about a half hour a couple months ago and was highly dismayed at how badly I was shooting. I've shot handguns before, but mainly .22s, and could usually hit what I was aiming at most of the time.

I'm sure that most who carry are reasonably responsible, but put me in the camp that says the likelihood of actually needing one on the river or in the local Walmart is so slim that I'll take the chance rather than putting up with the hassle of carrying one. If I had to work or travel in high crime areas, I'd think differently.

For every ones information, to use a hand gun, you need to fire about 5000 or 10000 rounds thru one to learn what can be done with one.

Although there may be a few boneheads on riverbanks, trespassers on your land, and petty thieves in your house, I assure you there are not as many ax murderers or zombies coming after you as you might think there are. Put the gun down and walk away. It works every time. I would rather someone take my worldly treasures than me take their life.
