dwiebenga Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Good plan, but also macke sure you have a drop shot or grub. I was down in September a couple years back, and the first morning I caught 4-5 on a FB jig right off the bat, and then they disappeared the rest of the weekend. Turned out they suspended in 25-30 feet over 40-50 feet and I was a novice who did not know how to get them. I would also bring along a few spinnerbaits and topwater too. JMHO. Best of luck and see you all in November!
Ham Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 do an archive earch for Football Jig. We had a great lengthy dicussion with many of the guys that really know how to fish a jig weighing in with their opiions. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Champ188 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I use a half-ounce jig nearly all of the time on 15-pound Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon in the green tint. There isn't a tougher or more sensitive fluorocarbon out there in my opinion.

Spoons, Jerks and Cranks = Seagar InvisX. Spinning gear Yozuri Hybrid. Topwater and Blades = 17-20lb XL/Big Game mono. Bama Rig - 60lb powerpro.
Champ188 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 abk, if you like 17-20 Trilene XL or Big Game for your mono needs, you might try the BPS Excel line. I was having some issues with P-Line breaking, not to mention the cost of it, so I decided to try a spool of the 17-pound Excel last year for throwing spinnerbaits/topwaters and found that I freakin' love it. Of course, can't get Big Game in 17 and 20 is just a bit bigger than I like for long casts. Anyway, that BPS Excel performs great and is cheap enough that you can change it whenever you want. However, I've had no issues with durability. Comes in clear and green. I prefer the latter.

I lost 2 nice football jigs last time I was out using 10 lb P-line hybrid. I wrote to the company and they sent me a free spool of their straight mono- which I don't mind. http://flyinthesouth.com/

As far as p-line fluoro clear goes I really liked it for my spinning gear in the 8lb test. I gave the Yozuri Hybrid a shot and liked it a little more so I have stuck with that since. I was using p-line fluoro clear in 4lb for my pan fish/crappie/ultra light fishing and I do not like it. Stuff is strong but for one reason or another it did NOT hold a knot well so I have now switched to Yozuri hybrid 4lb as well on my pan fish gear.
hknfsh Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I use 17 lbs test Excel or Trilene XT in 14 lbs test. Both are durable and cheap. Floro line is way over rated.....not worth the extra cost.
Quillback Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I like my floro, Seaguar Abrazx, I need that extra sensitivity when I'm jig fishing.
Champ188 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Not all fluorocarbons are created equal. The cheaper ones have less "feel" than the premium lines.
