fishinwrench Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 A Mercury or Yamaha lower units and Mercruiser outdrives can be removed in under 2 minutes and would be way easier to sell than a specific prop, so you might as well consider the prop a sacrificial lamb or keep it insured.
GNSfishing Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 In my opinion putting your boat in a stall is like placing a $100.00 bill on the sidewalk, there will be a few pass it by but sooner or later someone will picked it up. Same thing with your boat someone will take whatever they can. Locks are for keeping law abiding people honest.
fishinwrench Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 If you installed a 1" prop nut instead of a 15/16" you'd thwart the theives that are only equipped with a prop wrench
96 CHAMP Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I am pretty fortunate as I have left my boat down at my buddys house at the dock numerous times over the years at loz and never encountered a problem, maybe being down on the low rent arm of the lake at indian creek was helpful. i have never heard of him complain of any thefts on any of his equipment
96 CHAMP Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I do like the suggestion of a 1" prop nut though, dam good idea,
skeeter Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I have a very nice SS prop that when my boat is on the lift shines right out onto the open lake, you can see it 1/4 mile away, makes me nervous. Is there some way to replace the regular nut with some type of keyed nut? Like you see on a lug nut on high dollar chrome wheels? I'm not sure I want to take it on and off every time we come home as I will fish as long as the water isn't freezing in the eyelets. lol I know, wuss. Yep, the McGard Company makes motor-specific locking prop nuts. www.mcgard.com Just don't misplace the key after installation and record the key code somewhere for safekeeping just in case.
GNSfishing Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 There have been many lower units taken prop and all. There are only 5 bolts and the lower unit comes right off on a big Mercury outboard. Then thieves can take their time removing a prop. There is nothing safe if you leave your boat unattended in a dock stall or on a trailer for a period of time. Thats why mine is parked in my garage which of course I could have someone break in and get to everything in my home but not as likely as setting in a stall at a dock. They also have to defeat a security system at my home. Bottom line this world has produced more people who do not want to work for what they have and rely on someone to either give them their living or take it (steal) from others.
fishinwrench Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 There are only 5 bolts and the lower unit comes right off on a big Mercury outboard. Seven actually, but who's counting
GNSfishing Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Well when you get down to it, 4 lock nuts, 1 socket head cap screw and if you want to count the anode bolt makes 6 attachments
fishinwrench Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Well when you get down to it, 4 lock nuts, 1 socket head cap screw and if you want to count the anode bolt makes 6 attachments If yours doesn't have a bolt under the trim tab then it should. Little known fact: the bolt under the trim tab is the most important one....it acts as a vibration dampener, and without it the rest of the studs will vibrate loose. So since you have to go down the hole and remove the trim tab to get to it...that makes 7 But again, who's counting?
