The amount of pressure you put in a fish should be determined by the size of the hook you're using, and the line diameter/strength. Who would use a Med Heavy fast tip rod with a beetle spin? Trebles are just smaller hooks and don't need all that pressure.

A med-hvy fast tip rod wouldn't fish a beetle spin worth a crap, but a Lite or med-lt action fast tip rod would do just fine.

My point is that nobody stands there like a statue when fighting a fish. Ya gotta put some body movement into it and blah-blah-blah.   Assuming that you will loose less fish with a slower (not softer or stiffer) rod is basically admitting that your sense of feel and ability to keep the correct tension on a fish doesn't even exist.   Knowhatimean?    Slow rods are typically heavy in the tip and lack "feel", especially rods of 7' or more in length like most prefer for casting crankbaits.

Well, I do agree with you that this slow glass rod stuff is way over blown. I hope I never have to fish a glass rod anymore.

I don't have any glass rods. But I do have 2 that are composites of graphite and glass.....used for jerks and cranks. I already laid out why I think they are better for trebled baits but we haven't really mentioned line. I use 10lb line on jerks and cranks. That isn't exactly line you want to be horsing a fish in or flipping fish in the boat. Drag is set fairly loose and I will play a fish until the time is right to land/net him/her. A moderate action rod is better suited for that IMO. Jigs, T-Rigs, or other bottom contact baits I am using 15lb typically. I am throwing those on fast or extra fast action MH rods. In that situation I do horse the fish in and have the drag just about on lock down. More than one way to skin a cat and that's just how I like to roll.

I throw cranks all the time and big ones too that get to 25ft. I usually leave the hooks on a few select brands but if I change them it is an owner stinger hook. I throw them all on 10lb Invisix and use a lews bb1 pro with a 7'11" KVD composite rod. It will throw the bait a country mile. I have snapped the line sometimes because of the whipping action I get. The rod is very important in throwing these bigger cranks. The soft tip tip allows you to play the fish much more. I hardly ever lose a fish on this rod and have caught multiple doubles before with some being over 5lbs and get both of them in the boat. I used to think glass or composite rods were stupid and thought Clunn was feeding a bunch of bull. I bought one and completely changed my mind. Clunn the master cranker knows what he is talking about. I never thought I would own an 8ft rod.

When this guy ^^^ talks about deep cranking, better listen to what he has to say. Thanks for the info, Alex.

Exactly. Sometimes it's hard for us mere mortals to filter through the sales pitches of the Pro's/Elite's of the bass fishing world. Gotta keep the sponsors happy to keep yourself happy in the fishing industry so a white lie here and there is necessary. Fib about a bait you used to win a tourney, etc. But when it comes to rods you can't really fudge on that. With social media and TV coverage you can see exactly when these guys are using. Yes they feed us line after line about their sponsors products and how you have to have it to catch fish. But at the same time if they aren't winning they aren't feeding their family or making deposits into the bank account. You aren't going to use crappy gear or the wrong rod/reel setup when earning a check depends on it.

my two cents about rods is to use what seems to work the best for you.  many would not care one thing about my rod and reel arsenal, which is pretty meager, but they seem to get the job done for me.  and, i have never sharpened a hook with a rod:lol:.

very good thought processes about different rod types and how they work for each of us.

My sounding off on this kinda stuff is spawned from fishing with a guy that is constantly advising me to change which rods/reels that I do everything with.

Currently I've been doing pretty well with a swim jig, and I fish it on a Med. 6'6" with one of my 5.3:1 round reels, and here he starts in with... "Ya know you SHOULD be fishing that on your 7 foot Fenwick and a faster reel, because of blah-blah-blah" .   And I'm like Dude, in the time it took you to explain to me why I need to totally re-rig I have put 2 more keepers in the boat, so shut up and fish!  ?

I would agree with your buddy. LOL! In the end it's about putting fish in the boat and whatever floats your boat!
