Old plug Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Maybe the alloy problem is do to the sealant they use.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 If they are pitted it's an alloy problem. It sure looks like poor corrosion resistance from either the alloy or lack of a coating. aluminum and iron don't like one another and don't really get along without out help. the sticky thing is it would probably cost another $10 per engine to fit it with resistant hardware and that would cut into their profit. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
fishinwrench Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Well whatever it is, it sucks. And after dissassembling a jillion of them I can attest that it is NOT common on US assembled outboards. Just something to consider the next time you hear someone dogging some marina because they charged them 3-times the going rate for a water pump, or similar replacement on their jap outboard.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 We used to see it on some of our equipment that was made or parted from Asia. It seemed that they didn't believe that non moving parts and especially fasteners needed to be very good quality. It was a little bit of a problem even iron on iron. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
