skeeter Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 According to one of the passengers on the Southwest Airlines flight that mistakenly landed at the College of the Ozark's airstrip, "We have all deplaned from @SouthwestAir 4013, and the mood is somber now that we realized we were 40 feet from the edge of a cliff,” Schieffer tweeted " !!!! http://www.news-leader.com/article/20140113/NEWS01/301130056/NTSB-investigating-Southwest-airport-mix-up-near-Branson?nclick_check=1 Can you imagine the loss of life (124 reported passengers + aircrew) if that pilot had not recognized his error and slammed the engines and reversing gear plus brakes to full-on during that landing ? And that's not even mentioning the environmental disaster resulting from a 737 crashing into Taneycomo.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 It wouldn't have crashed in the lake but onto 65. With the traffic added in, big disaster. I think, but I'm not positive, that the two runways are somewhat inline and I would assume that is why the tower didn't pick up on the wrong approach. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 13, 2014 Root Admin Posted January 13, 2014 The Branson Airport - runway runs North and South. The C of O runway is East and West. Lots of lights surrounding the college a/p. No lights around the commercial a/p. They just made a big mistake. Thankfully it didn't cost them their lives and lots of others.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Isn't the county a different airstrip and the one with the boulder bank at the side of 65? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
skeeter Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 According to what CBS National News broadcast just reported they were headed towards Hwy 65. That would follow landing protocol as it would have meant landing "into the wind" so I don't know where the passenger the media quoted saw a "cliff" but there is a considerable drop-off at the SE end of the COO runway. Either way they avoided a disaster. Southwest is abandoning the Branson location/airport in June 2014.
Old plug Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I do not know how the control tower plays into this. I know he must have been on VFW when he was coming in but still the control tower tracks his course and glide path on final.
Jerry Rapp Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 this just in from the National Enquirer. Both pilots were logged into OAF at the time.
Flysmallie Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 this just in from the National Enquirer. Both pilots were logged into OAF at the time. :)
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 There you have it, Old Plug says they were at the VFW. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
fishinwrench Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Well hey, cheap liquor and sequesters go hand in hand, right? Can't blame the pilot for choosing to land within walking distance.
