BilletHead Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Ok good this is what I was wanting to hear. As far as lighting them up mildly to get there attention I can see that but the guy I went with had the thing set pretty high and he was screaming and shocking with a mad tone to him. His dog to him was a tool to be used for one purpose. He does work the dog off season. I know one thing for sure dogs don't live long enough. Our Sadie isn't really supposed to be up on the furniture. We do let her lay on the porch futon where we sleep most of the winter. When we leave her in the house she has this look about her like she had done something wrong. You can go into the bedroom and see and feel a warm place where she had been. A few times I have slipped in and caught her. She lays still and plays the you can't see me card. In her senior years we are a bit more relaxed though. When we have things going where the dog can't go we have neighbors in there late 70's that watch her. She has a hall pass there and they let her do as she pleases. First thing she does is hit the couch next to Ross. Feathers and Fins Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Marty, none of my hunting dogs have been " outside dogs " even my wolves were indoor animals, I look at it this way. We made a choice to bring them in to our family "Family" being the key word and I wouldn't put my kids outside to sleep or eat and wouldn't tell them stay off the furniture. The more bonded you are with them the more they seem to want to please. I hit Sammie one time with the shock and that was by accident and felt bad for weeks after. She is now blind and I can't hunt her in water but she was voice trained as well and in a field she is still just as good as ever and still loves it. She waits for direction and gets birds. She reminds me of when my grandfather had cancer and so many people didn't want to go because it took more effort to go with him. Well I loved him always and always made sure to go with him, she is like that it takes more time to retrieve and to get her situated but I cant imagine not taking her because she loves it and I love her. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
ness Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I have a friend that had a GSP, and that dog spent its whole life in a run he had built in his back yard. That is, except for the 3-4 days he took her out to hunt each year. I just couldn't do that to a dog. We've got a minimum of twelve legs in our bed every night, occasionally 16 if the cat sneaks in. But, I realize there are two schools of thought on dogs. We crate depending on the dog. Max doesn't need it when he's alone. Our 6 month old definitely needs it -- she'll get into any and everything, and still chews when she's bored. She's content in the kennel. They both ride in kennels in the car when we're out on bidness, but I'll let them on the seats occasionally running errands, or whatever. Marty -- the guy you're describing sounds like the kind I hate to see with an e-collar. One more... John
moodyfour Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I will never use a shock collar period!!! Now granted I have wanted to a few times with my Brit, but never will. I guess personal opinion, but have felt that way since they came along. My dogs do stay outside, but they get out and play with the kids all the time. Also, if weather is like it has been, they have spent lots of time inside. With our crazy schedules it is hard to leave them in all the time. That is my two cents Billet.
