darbwa
Slow. I could just leave it at that but I know it wouldn't be very helpful. I joined a group of geologists (mainly) for their annual float trip. There were about 40 in the group including one gentleman from the Nature Conservancy who gave an interesting little talk at lunch about the work they are doing in the Kings river watershed. Between the geology lessons and the environmental lesson I felt like I was on a field trip, which was great. We floated from Marshall Ford to Dry Fork creek (about 5 miles). We left around noon and took off the river around 5. I threw everything I could but only caught 2 little guys all day. After the float I spent another half hour or so wading and fishing around Marshall Ford and caught 2 more little guys. I assume that fishing on the back end of a group that big made the fishing harder but I was surprised I did not have better luck. I was the only one fishing hard - a couple others were doing a little bit of fishing but I do not think anyone else caught anything. I will be back in a few weeks to try again a little farther down river.
Dan Kreher
Me and MSA Matt floated Kings from Marshall to Rock House two weekends ago with similar crummy luck. Beautiful weather and water conditions, but not much happening back on 4/25-26 on Kings up that far. Lots of other floaters on river upstream and down of us on that Saturday but we were relatively alone. Camped on that big gravel bar at your Dry Creek take out. Salvaged fishing portion of trip with awesome day on Crooked Creek during unsettled weather. Got rained on pretty good but fishing was great. Lots of good smallies and tons of nice goggle eye/Ozark Bass/Shadow Bass, or whatever sub-species they are in the White River watershed. I think that Kings fishes better in warmer months but water is much skinnier up that far come 2nd half of June.
Terrierman
I hit it pretty hard Saturday on the James River with similar results. First cast was a nice goggle eye on a chart/orange spinner bait. Second cast was another and I thought it was going to be ON!. Didn't catch another fish until after 2:00 and nothing over 12 inches, maybe a half a dozen fish all day and I tried everything I know to try. Ham
Hey Rick, My buddy used to fish that river so often that I half jokingly call it the Johnny River. He KNOWS it. Well, recently he floated it on one of his favorite stretches and really struggled. Kind of bummed him out. He won't be back until the water is warmer. ollie
I'm sure others have caught their fair share on the Kings, but the few times I have fished it I have never been that impressed. I think it's glory days are behind it as far as all those big pigs getting caught out of there. I doubt if I ever fish it again. Too many other creeks to fish that I haven't! Ham
Thanks too bad. It was pretty good the first few times I fished it about 10 years ago. I'm kinda in Ollie's boat in that I have too many other places I really want to fish to stick with one that is not producing very long. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Members Rustynuts
Guys , the Kings is really just a large creek, It cant stand the pressure of every fish caught being put on a stringer, I might get some flack and be called racist, but the large Latino population down here has found the river and more than once I have floated quietly into a deep hole to find a spearfisherman stabbing my bronze babies. AGFC is stretched thin and Kelly cant be at every access at once but this kind of killing of all fish cant continue. Several times the sheriff has been called because someone thought I was causing a scene. But I cannot just slip downstream and ignore it anymore. Ron Burgundy
When they stopped the gravel from being taken out of the river it hurt the fishing.....the once deep holes have filled in......... Gone but not forgotten Martin Ford
