fishinwrench Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 The Pit Bull issue is a complicated issue. I have known some Pit Bulls who were as gentle as any other dog. But that reputation, the statistics and the mechanical advantage of their body is a lot to consider. That pretty much nailed it. Best way I've ever heard it put. There's a place for them, but it isn't in the yard of every third trailer in the park.
Gavin Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Saw my neighbors boy playing with a pit in his backyard today. No fence...He hasn't made many good choices lately...so I hope it is just visiting. They take miserable care of their other dog.
Old plug Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 I believe when you breed a characteristic into a animal it becomes a part of their mental makeup in their genes. Therefore you can suppress it thru training but it will still be there and can arise at anytime. It happens all the time with people who take in wild animals and "TAME THEM".

Old plug Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Unless you have ever owned a cat for awhile do not under estimate there value as a pet. We had one and she could express herself to us. as well as our dog could. We lost both of them last year in a few months. The dog to age and the cat to a cancer. We are going to get more. Maybe a cat only because at our age they are really easy to care for if we ever get over loosing these two.
ness Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Man, I hear you OP. It's tough when you lose one. They truly are a part of the family. What sucks is that they don't live all that long. The other day my son said, 'I can't imagine a family living without dogs.' My first reaction was 'how cute', until I thought about it for a second. They add so much to life -- you really can't quantify it. They're just there, and it ain't right it they're not. Dogs have been in the picture for me since I was a baby pooping in my diapers. They'll be in the mix until I'm old and senile and pooping in my diapers. That's just the way it's gonna be. John
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Same here. My parents had a young Chow when I was born and she lived to be almost 14. I've never had a time that I didn't have one. I had a friend who took care of mine when I was on active duty so I managed to keep one even then. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members LunkerB Posted May 22, 2014 Members Posted May 22, 2014 This whole darn country has went dog crazy. Dog breeding should be illegal and every dog should be neutered or spayed. The way I see it is they are crossbred, inbred, dumb down wolve dogs that people defend way to much. I have been attacked by German shepards twice and would like to see every German shepard put down. They are more violent toward people than any other breed I have seen. They have a mean bark but a weak bite and are worthless if you ask me. The Ofallon MO police love them though and treat them like people.
ness Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Trying to read between the lines a little here: have you had some run-ins with the O'Fallon Police K9 Squad? John
