Bird Watcher Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 So, if we could step away from all this home invasion BS, I'd like to submit the following video, from CNN and Anderson Cooper no less, discussing the merits of AR style rifles for Hog hunting. Watch, dismiss, whatever.......
fishinwrench Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 If you hadn't started drinking beer at 4pm causing you to pass out on the couch before 10pm you could have kicked his azz before he ever got to your wife.
Kelroy Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Holy cow. I was just trying to provide one possible answer to the man's question. Nothing more. Here's the question again for those of you who missed it the first time.. Is there any hunting, or even home defense, scenario where the AR platform would be the BEST choice? I thought the scenario depicted in the law enforcement training target would be one possible answer. I never said it was likely to happen, in Hollywood or anywhere else for that matter. It was a rhetorical question, about a hypothetical situation. Whether you agree or not, it certainly does not warrant any type of juvenile personal attacks. I was simply giving a sincere answer to what I assumed was a sincere question. I especially take offense at the notion that I am "feeding" anyone "this line of crap about how you are going to be prepared for all these Hollywood scenarios." Can you please provide any kind of factual reference in which I said anything like that? Of course not, because that is YOUR line of crap, not mine.
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I think the AR and it's cousins would be a poor choice for home protection. Precision is probly the most important aspect in order to avoid a mishap, and the AR isn't suited for that in close quarters. I would quetion it's use in hog hunting also. 50 and 63 grain bullets don't generate a lot of penetration and a well fed hog has plenty of fat to get through. We killed hogs with 22's, but it was between the eyes. I'm not knocking anyone for owning an assault rifle, if it's what you ike to shoot that's fine, but you can't make it something it isn't.. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ollie Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 The AR is a great platform like JD said. Cabelas is just pandering to the younger generation that has grown up playing all the video games IMO. My son built his own AR for under a grand, but did it his own way and designed it how he likes it. It is a sign of the times. 20 years ago you wouldn't have seen that many guns in a flyer let alone all the ones that have the AR platform. To me it is nothing more than a tool when hunting. The larger capacity magazines are nice when you are at the range, but like someone else said early it should only take you one shot and I can see someone squeezing the trigger multiple times for a kill shot. And yes they make awesome hog rifles! BilletHead Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 The hambulance, I love it. Now everyone get off my rear because I am just preparing for the porkapocalypse now. Forget the zombies. Bacon is way more scary and good. Missouri wants them eradicated, I'm just doing my part, BilletHead who loves to tape thirty rounders back to back. In all seriousness I have killed deer and coyote. AR's are fun to shoot and own. There would not be so many out there if some folks would quit saying they shouldn't be owned. Remember when you all were young? How many times were you told no but you went ahead and did it? People are getting tired of being told no,you can't and you shouldn't. "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" BilletHead " One thing in life is for sure. If you are careful you can straddle the barbed wire fence but make one mistake and you will be hurting" BilletHead P.S. "May your fences be short or hope you have long legs" BilletHead
Al Agnew Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Holy cow. I was just trying to provide one possible answer to the man's question. Nothing more. Ah, but the scenario you showed IS a Hollywood scenario, and there probably aren't a hundred people in the whole country outside of trained special forces that could make that scenario turn out well no matter what firearm they happened to be holding. The guy already has his handgun pointed straight at you in an indoor situation where you are certainly going to be close enough that he'll nail you if he shoots. Can you bring the rifle up, aim it with enough precision to hit him and not the woman, and fire before he shoots you in the face? Not in a million years. Now if I was 50 yards away from him, I might take my chances that he won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn at that range and I can hit him with a good rifle that I've shot a lot before, given that it's a Hollywood scenario where I'm calm, cool, and collected, which, if it was any woman in my life that I cared about, I darned well wouldn't be.

I think most use the 308 platform for hogs. The load ranges go up to a 458 Socom load that is the equivalent of force generated by a 45-70, more than enough for a hog. For those that used them in Vietnam, they have changed and evolved 1000 percent over the original design. And we can credit the AR platform for spawning the generation of synthetic stocks on other rifles and shotguns. New synthetics are more durable and sturdy than wood. They do not swell when wet so you can use them in any weather. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

If you notice the suit, I was thinking the poor sucker just came home and caught his boss wearing her panties over his head and the guy in the pic is just pulling down in self defense because you are threatening him. Its all her fault, I bet neither gives 2 shts whether she gets capped. Let lead fly. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
ollie Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 lol, ok my warped sense of humor found that somewhat funny. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
