Trying to catch some Flathead on the lower St Francis while I've got a rainout. It's been tough with the river fluctuating so much. My grandfather taught me how to do this 25 years ago, he's past on now, but its a tradition I plan on keeping going with my son, I try to do this every fall when I can! It's the only fish I think I prefer to eat over crappie!!

I know this may be more of a Delta thing, but I know folks on Spring river that tear up the Flathead!

Flathead'n is fun. We used to catch them on the Salt before Mark Twain was impounded. Mark twain was good too. Big sunfish near heavy cover, big hooks, big line, big baits.

Great eating, gave the Blues and Channels to he neighbors.

yes sir!! I prefer green sunfish, or (riceslicks) as the old timers called them, but bait shops round here don't carry them, need to catch them out of a pond.

We used to catch 2 to 300 pounds on the Mississippi river, and we'd give the blues to the locals fishing the banks, some of them were actually fishing to try to feed there families. Gave this one lady about 50 pounds of blue cat one time, and she started dancing and said her prayer had come true, it was humbling to realize just how hard some folks have it.

sure is Ham, I've had it smallie fishing several times in early Sept, but this is the first time in a month I've had it out. It's all muddy now, broke it in Delta style today.

Flatheads are excellent fighters, never ate one though. Love me some channel cats.

I also learned from my grandfather how to do this

Oct. flathead bite is on, saw a 37, a 43, and several 20's caught this month

Gotta love Fall catfish'n !

the 37 was released :), the rest went in the deep fryer and fed 16 people, yum

I don't know why you guys are off the blues. They eat really well too, just get every bit of red out. I don't put a knife on a channel cat that's bigger than maybe 2 pounds.

Must be the water they come from, or what they eat. Grand lake OK blue cats are some of the best tasting freshwater fish I have ever eaten. Small ones that is, under 8 lbs. or so.
