dtrs5kprs Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Guys...have not been on the site since July or so. Planned to coach offense for a youth football team and ended up scrambling to fill in as a head coach due to some unexpected problems. Kept me completely covered up from July until this week. Wanted to apologize for not replying to messages. Will try to get back to everyone today. Hope to be back in fish mode shortly. Feel free to fire away with any Ned Rig/Varmint Q's. Hope some of you will give it a go as the water cools, even into winter.
Quillback Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Good to have you back! I've tried a little Ned rig fishing the last couple of weeks, caught some small 10" bass but haven't had any success getting larger fish. Maybe I'm giving up on it too quickly.

Have to remember...it often works best when you fish it against conventional wisdom. Too shallow, too slow, too cold, etc. Ought to be working around deep docks on the lighter heads for suspended fish.
abkeenan Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Good to have you back Dave. Been wondering where the heck you've been but figured it was coaching football. That or you are taking Duke losses really hard these days and locked yourself in a padded room for 4 months.
Ham Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Hey Super Dave is back! Actually used it on a stream in a COLD water situation recently. I had not really expected it to work nearly as well as it did. It outperformed a skirted jig and trailer that would have been the traditional choice. I alternated between the Ned and the Zig Jig. I felt like we did really well. I've been using the Ned in tandem with a tube the LITTLE bit I have been on the lake. Both got bit well. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. fishingaddiction Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Welcome back Dave. Hope you had a successful football season. I remember the days of coaching youth football......about 15 yrs ago. I wouldn't have traded those days for anything. Born to Fish. Forced to Work.
magicwormman Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Welcome back Dave!! It's been a slow summer and fall for me. I've tried fishing the Ned out to about 20 ft. with very little success, just a few small fish. It was nothing like this Spring, when the little varmit was on fire. It gave me my personal best for the year at just over 6 lbs, so you have made a believer out of me. Now that football season is over, are you able to make me some jigs? I've had good luck bending the barb down. It just makes hook removal so much easier and you give away less jigs.
Hughesy Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Hey Dave, great to have you back and thanks for taking the time to mentor our youth. This country could use more men like you.
Champ188 Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Hey Dave, good to have you back. Like Hughesy, I appreciate you taking the time to work with our youth. Football is a great teaching tool. Just one question. What's a Ned rig?
dtrs5kprs Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 Just one question. What's a Ned rig? Honestly I almost can't remember. I do seem to remember that fish live in water but the rest is fuzzy.
