Trout Spinning Gear

I thought I had seen a post a while back regarding the spinning reel/rod combo that Phil uses for casting jigs on Taneycomo, but I was unable to find it with a search.

With that said, I am looking to purchase a quality spinning reel and rod specifically for casting small jigs targeting trout at Taneycomo. What does everyone like to use? It seems any reviews you read have a love/hate for a lot of the same gear. I may throw some small spoons with the combo as well, but it will primarily be used to throw jigs.

I use a 7' light action BPS microlite with a Abu Garcia Cardinal spinning reel and spooled with 4# Pline Fluoroclear. The light action is fine for 1/32-3/32 oz jigs, but I would prefer to have a medium-light when tossing the 1/8oz jigs. Also, I know some guys use 2# test when throwing jigs but I lose a lot of sensitivity going from 4# to 2# test. It causes me to miss a lot of fish if I can't see my jig. I prefer sticking with 4# and just tying on a leader of 2# if needed.

I use the sore lip series trout 6'6 spinning rod from trout magnet paired with a Abu cardinal. I use 2 pound SOS trout line sometimes with a fluorocarbon tippet sometimes not. I've used a ton of 6 foot spinning rods but I love this longer rod for both casting and fighting trout on light line. Also helps when throwing a jig and float also.

I feel like Phil sells the combo he uses at his place on Taneycomo. He's a great jig fisherman and I assume he wouldn't handcuff himself using gear that is a poor fit for the job.

I'm using Dorber OMT 84 UL rods. I consider it more of a Light action rod. Not the typical buggy whip UL rod.

Richard Cross sells his rod. Crossfire. Throws trout jigs very well. It has give to protect light line, but enough umph to catch big trout. I'm also used mine on the creeks for smallies. I have of course caught a pile of trout on it as well.

Most recently I've gotten a Fenwick Elite-tech River Runner Rod. Much slower action than my Dorbers, but I like it a bunch too. It isn't a dead stick, but you sense the rod loading with a fish more than feel every bite. Very light in hand. Very comfortable to fish with too. I have the ERR69L-FS-2. Light action 6'9" 2 piece rod. "Fast" action. rated for 1/32 to 1/8 oz.

I'm using Pfulger President spinning reels. I think I am using the 2500 size reel. It isn't that typical tiny little spinning reel. I'm using 6 and 8 lb Nanofil with 6 lb P- line CX Premium in a moss green.

I don't fish Taneycomo very often, but when I do this set up catches them just fine. Most of the time I trout fish the White River below BSL.

You can't go wrong with one of the Lake Taneycomo LT series rods Phil sells in his shop. A LT6 is my primary rod for straight jigging. Second is a BPS Microlite medium light 6 1/2'

Depends on the lure. Usually fish the same stuff I use for Smallmouth for Brown Trout. Medium action spin our light casting tackle. Light action for smaller stuff and rainbow. Fly rod when that's good.
